Suugest you read the book first. The book comes to life when you watch the film.:D

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Thanks Lai! I always do that. I read the book before I watch the movie unless it hasn't come to my attention that movie was based on a book. Such was the case with the Trilogy "The Lord of the Rings." But I think when I've come to read LOTR the reading was enriched by watching the movie first. Just can't get the awesome imagery out of head! But as such I take it as a precaution to Google a film before watching it. Up to this I so badly want to read all the horror movies based on Stephen King's novels but, alas, as plodding as it sounds I have to hit the books first. As I think it will be a far more richer experience; seeing what you just imagined playing on the screen.

Once again, thanks, Lai! ^_^

And because of that Dracula will come and visit you when you sleep. And scare the living day lights out of you and suck you dry!

Ahahahaha!! :D

Ito ang mga totoong vampire! Nasty, scary and by the mere mention of their names sends shivers down your spine. Unlike those "sagas" that "watered down" their reason of being and their essence.

Since I'm talking vampire here I would like to recommend I Am Legend. Its waaaayyyyy different than the recent Will Smith movie. Plus, it was a former group book and I like to know what's your opinion on that, thanks! ☺☺☺

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments If you want to freak out then I suggest you go and read The Road.

Since reading a review of the book, I've always been captivated by this horrendous but short description from that book:

“Sometimes they find shriveled heads, or the remains of a baby on a barbecue.”

I swear the first time I read it, I'm almost on the verge of puking and I was reminded by that Cannibal Holocaust movie. (Burp!)

If ain't that the stuff that make nightmares, then tell me, what gives?

You've seen "Cannibal Holocaust"? Saan ka nakanood? I'm dying to see that movie but I can't find a copy :(

message 214: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Maryse kung hindi ka maarte sa Quiapo sa may Hidalgo across Quiapo church daming pirated ng iba't ibang version ng Cannibal Holocaust. I watched it way back in high school with friends. Grabe! Yung iba di nakatagal. I was the one left watching the movie. Sobrang graphic! Buti na lang nakapanood na ko kung paano magkatay ng baboy o aso sa 'min, so na-unsettled lang ako. Baka hindi mo rin magustuhan kasi may mga graphic sexual sceness din, kaya a word of caution: All Cannibal movies are not a family movie. For maximum effect better watch it alone or with a friend that will rub your back when you throw up in the bathroom... Ahehehe!

Pero dahil naman nurse ka Maryse, ehhh sisiw na lang sa iyo ang mga makikita mo. So I say just be wary of the sex scenes and yung pagtuhog dun sa babae from mouth to anus... parang lechon type... ganun...

oopps! Sorry for others who've read this....
I guess I've ruined your appetite...

Bye-bye lunch... T_T

Hehe, I agree jzhunagev. Last Sunday, I was reading the papers and there was a sort of review about The Road, the girl who made it said one reading of the book was enough na daw because just seeing the cover makes her feel depressed. She said Nick Hornby's review was what prompted her to go read the book

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Talaga nabasa mo rin yun? It's comforting that I wasn't the only young one here who read the Sunday papers. I read both PDI and The Star every sunday. Tas pagmonday PDI lang kasi inaabangan ko yung mga book reviews ni Ruel S. Devera then I always clip each and every book review para may idea ako kung anong book/s ang bibilin ko in the near future. I've been doing this for 2 years now...
Ahehehehe!

Cheers to Sunday paper readers!! ☺☺☺

message 217: by Moe (new)

Moe (moe_b) | 84 comments @jzhunagev: wow galing! hehe

I'm a fan of Sunday broadsheets kasi since we were young, my father made us read editorials. Of course when I was just 11, i kinda loathed it hehe. We have 3 papers every Sunday: PDI, The Star & I buy Manila Bulletin. I read The Star almost everyday when I have the time, gusto ko kasi ang writers nila, esp Jessica Zafra and F Sionil Jose. When I was in highschool I was collecting "Young Star" pa because of their lifestyle pieces hehe, they're in the bodega na. Ako din I clip articles about book reviews from The Star naman, yung mga kay Scott R. Garceau & Christian Ocier (yung column nya na Pulp Addiction)and any other good reviews. Yung "Three Cups of Tea", I read it off Gina Lopez's column last year-it made her cry daw kaya I got a copy. I also clip articles from the Travel Now section. ;)

Mabuhay ang Sunday papers and their readers! ;)

It's a good thing you didn't watch "If Only" starring Jennifer Love Hewwit. I swear you'll cry buckets of tears. But for me, movie made me think if such a thing happens. But I thought I was melancholic for a day or two. Just want to hug someone at that time badly. Well, if you're in the mood to mop your floors then I suggest you go and watch "If Only."

message 221: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Scott R. Garceau... uurrggghhhh! He and his American ways... it beats the hell out of me how he became a columnist in the STAR. Really, I've had enough how Americans think of our country. But I agree that he sometimes writes some of the good book and movie review. Pwera lang yung latest niya about Avatar. His interpretation of the film jusn't clicked with me. There's something off in his opinion. Well, it's his opinion after all.

Yung Pulp Addiction I also clip it. Kaso minsan sobrang engrossed si Mr. Ocier sa mga reviews niya feeling ko he mentions some spoilers. Like the time when a review of his of Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood, it seems he gave some important plot points that I found are key to understanding the book. But, man, I love how he critiques books! I wish I could write reviews just like him and what d'you'know! Baka STAR Columnist na rin ako. BTW, I did my on-the-job training at the STAR. It was fun, but stressful not to mention a pressure. But I gotta say they give the best allowance! Ahahahaha!! ☺☺☺

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Bluemoon wrote: "hmmmm....I was planning on reading The Kite Runner. Is it really that dramatic?"

Dramatic to the point of breaking your heart. I'm so close to crying. That's why I just read this one at home. Kasi baka pag sa LRT2 magtaka na lang bigla yung mga tao bakit ako umiiyak. Sabihing siraulo pa ko...
ehehehehe...

What I like in the book is the insight about Muslim life, traditions, customs, etc especially about Afghanistan.

I weep for Hassan and Kamal.

I don't know about you Bluemoon, but I think this may not be a good book for you. Saying that, I bear in mind that you like your book as an escape to the real world. Well, this one's a harsh portrait of Afghanistan and its continued bloodletting. However, there's something tugging at me that this will all turn out for good.

My warm regards and happy reading! ^_^

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments I still don't know Bluemoon. I'm still reading it. Like half-way through the book. But from the way the protagonist spoke in the first chapter, I think he'll live. I think this is a coming-of-age tale. So no worries on that aspect...

Agree with Doni. But i liked the movie, too though admittedly it aint as good as the book. I guess when you have such a splendidly written story, it would really be tough canning it into a 2hour max film version.

message 239: by Apokripos (last edited Mar 16, 2010 06:15PM) (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Bluemoon, don't bother to read faster. I admit I'm not a fast reader. I'm the one who immerses himself in the author's beguiling narrative. Doing this makes me appreciate a book more. Sometimes when I'm through, I read it again. I don't know why I don't get tired doing this--most all when the book really captivated me. I always look on how the author did what he did. And it's always a marvel looking in the "inner-workings" of the writer's mind.

Reading a book is not a race. As readers our primary concern is how much the message of the book got through us and how we enjoyed it.

My warm regards and happy reading!! ^_^

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a heartwarming book. I like it so much. That book starts my interest in reading books about Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and the likes. That's the reason I read "Three Cups of Tea" and "A Hundred and One Days", both good reads (non-fiction).
