What are you reading and why? Jan-Jun 2014
I just finished Fingersmith, what a story! Up next is Whistling past the Graveyard, which I've been wanting to read for a long time and I'm looking forward to it! It will count as 0.5 chunkster.
I just finished A Prayer for Owen Meany, and it was very good. I marked it as my favorite of this year. I started The Name of the Rose last night to switch things up a bit. I also picked up The Goldfinch today, which I'm very excited about. I'm cruising through Mickey's Marchers, yay!
I also just finished Fingersmith, and I agree with Peggy and Janice that it is quite a story. (I finished it sometime after midnight last night.) I am also in the mood for something much lighter, so I have started Murder, She Barked. I don't think it "counts" for anything, but it's fun and short.
I started Sarah Thornhill this morning. This is a short one for another May-Australia read and the last of Kate Grenville's Thornhill trilogy. I wanted to wait for the discussion thread for My Cousin Rachel to go up before getting farther than chapter 1.

The minute i fou..."I bought the book a while ago, and put it down a little into it because I found all the different characters confusing. I started watching the series recently, and I'm about halfway into season one. That renewed my interest in the book, so now I'll be picking it up again soon. Sad to hear they're changing things up, I'm super excited to read the books now, though!
I have The Zookeeper's Wife going on audio and am reading Fingersmith with the buddy read and am really enjoying.
Janice wrote: "Your next Around the World challenge will be in Spain! :)"Maybe in 2020 at the rate I have added books set in Australia to my shelf.
I finished Shanghai Girls for my chunkster challenge. It's paired with The Man from Beijing , also done.
Just finished Behind Closed Doors and now I'm starting The Dead Town which will then be another series finished. I'm excited about all the new ones I can embark on then!
I have started The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. My son graduated from UW and it is an Island- wide read right now.
Well I already started a couple over the last few months with my chunksters - series include The Gentleman Bastards, Silo, Bas-Lag, and Iron Druid Chronicles so I will continue on with those but I also have a number of books on my kindle which are "first in the series" so Odd Thomas, Storm Front, Ender's Game, The Blade Itself, The Gunslinger, Grave Witch and Moon Called to name a few. I just wanted to get rid of some of the others before starting these ones as it can be a bit overwhelming when there are so many series books to read, especially as I have come to some of the series quite late and there are many of them!
I'm still slogging through Andersonville for my chunkster challenge. It's slow going, but I am enjoying it very much. I always knew the Confederate prison was pretty awful, but it never occurred to me that a great danger for the inmates would be the thugs and gangs inside. I love it when I learn something new. I'm definitely learning a lot with this one!

Suzanne -I'm not that far into it ( just finished chapter 1) but so far so good. The author has the setting correct ( a pet peeve of mine is when an author sets a book in a location I'm familiar with and screws up the details) and this is a story that I am excited to read. I will let you know when I get further along.
Working through Trunk Music since this is the last of the harry Bosch series I currently own guess I'll head somewhere else after it. Hopefully starting Boy's Life if nothing else comes up
Sarah wrote: "Well I already started a couple over the last few months with my chunksters - series include The Gentleman Bastards, Silo, Bas-Lag, and Iron Druid Chronicles so I will continue on with those but I ..."Sarah, you mention Moon Called. I love that series. I read the most recent one, Night Broken, a couple of weeks ago. You probably already know this, but in case you don't, there is also a related series that starts with Alpha and Omega, a short story in On the Prowl, and continues with three or four books about those characters. On the one hand, you have a lot of reading to do, but on the other hand, I envy you that you have all of that to look forward to.
I've read the first 7 chapters of Whistling Past the Graveyard, and I think the story is going to be a bit different from what I expected from the backcover of the book and the description on goodreads. Too bad, because I looked forward to what I thought it was about, but I still think I'll enjoy it.
I finished The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin OlympicsSuzanne - I gave it 4 stars.
Now I need to finish True Grit- for my RL book club and Lover Enshrined because it was due back at the library soon.
I have readGhost of a Chance, Helen Chappell for Chunkster, deweys-depository, serial
Cat-Eyed Trouble, Robert Skinner for Chunkster, deweys-depository, serial
I'm really liking this Noir series set in 1930s New Orleans
Suspect, Robert Crais for YLTO! April Group Read Theme
and for Chunkster, deweys-depository
Good dog and her man story.
Insight into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Bimbos of the Death Sun (Jay Omega, #1), Sharyn McCrumb
for Chunkster, deweys-depository
Despite the name, really enjoyed this. Lots of tongue in cheek humor.
Dead Duck (Sam and Hollis Mystery), Helen Chappell during Toppler
for Chunkster, deweys-depository
The Literary Life and Other Curiosities, Robert Hendrickson
for Chunkster, deweys-depository
Chocked full of one paragraph tidbits about all things literary. Sort of a Ripley's Believe It or Not for readers.
The Weight of Blood, Laura McHugh
for Chunkster, deweys-depository, yearbook
Based on a chilling true story. Humans are nasty things!
Blood Work (Terry McCaleb, #1), Michael Connelly
for Chunkster, deweys-depository, hear-ye, sai-king-recommends
Can't go wrong with Connelly.
Blood Lines: Long & Short Stories, Ruth Rendell
for Chunkster, deweys-depository, shortcut
Books: A Memoir (I am sooo tired of chasing html links with this search engine. Books should be the first in line!) by Larry McMurtry for YLTO! April Challenge
deweys-depository
If you are not a seller or a scout, you will likely be bored. Name-dropper.
I started Fingersmith for a Buddy Read, but my audio copy failed! Now I am waiting for a replacement, while everyone teases me with multiple spoilers!
In the meantime I am starting New Deal for Death by Elliott Roosevelt and Naked in Death by J.D. Robb. Both for the Chunkster Challenge.
I have started The Summoning a few weeks ago. So far the story is quite entertaining. I hope it gets even better.
Hi Rodrigo. Welcome! Haven't seen that book before, looks intriguing. Let us know what you think when you're done :)
Finished The Last Hunter: Descent if I was 20 years younger I would have loved it. It is ya but it felt YA and took a lot away from the story that way. Like I say young adults probably would eat it up though.Started The Blacksmith's Son which was some cheapie I picked up and been sitting around for a long time. This months theme seemed like time to try it. The writing seemed really bad in the beginning but as I go along the author either got more comfortable or I got used to him.either way as the plot unfolds it keeps getting better. Won't be a 5 star read but the first couple chapters left me to wonder if I'd finish it at all.
Finished my chunkster audio Kinslayer which was enjoyable although not as good as the first in the series. Now on to another audio The Sisters Brothers which I'm listening to for the "other books..." group read.
I just finished listening to The Invisible Bridge. I enjoyed the story very much, but the guy who read it to me was not to my liking. There was not enough emotion given to the characters and story. At times I would be listening, the scenes would change, and I wouldn't realize it until a few seconds later. The history of the book was the best part to me, for I had no knowledge of Hungary's position in WWII. Now on to something a bit different, I've started listening to A Discovery of Witches.
Mari wrote: "Now on to something a bit different, I've started listening to A Discovery of Witches...."I really liked this one, Mari. I hope your narrator is good! I read the first and second books and I think we are still waiting for the third, but I could be wrong and I am behind.

Oh, yay!! You should see me at the library Cherie, it's quite funny. I have my phone out, checking what goodreads has to say about the ones I pick out. Then there's the "oh darn, it's not a chunkster, so I've got to put it back for now.", lol! My life is rather busy, so I'm unable to read quite as much as I'd like to. The narrator is good, I was happy to notice already. Hmmm... I may be adding the others to my chunkster list.
Mari, I've had Discovery of Witches on my Kindle for months (it was a "daily deal" at one point). Let me know how you like the audio.
Oh, and I finished Whistling Past the Graveyard yesterday, and will probably start Divine Secrets of the Yaya Sisterhood today.
I too have A Discovery of Witches as well as the follow up book to read at some point - both on my chunkster list!
Mari - glad you enjoyed The Invisible Bridge - I really enjoyed it - read the print version and it was 5-stars. I loved A Discovery of Witches - 5 stars as well - the writing is superb and the story is wonderfully intriguing. I didn't enjoy the second one Shadow of Night as much as the first but it was still pretty good. And I had to re-read the comments and that was Janice who was spot on - the third The Book of Life is slated for release July 15 and I'm waiting with bated breath for it!
I finished My Cousin Rachel for May's group read. I thought it was amazing! It is tied with Rebecca as my favourite Daphne du Maurier book so far and has also gone straight on to my favourites shelf.Next up, I will be starting The Angel's Game for a buddy read. I loved 'The Shadow of the Wind' so cannot wait to get started with this!
Finished yet another series book with The Dead Town - overall I enjoyed the series, some books were better than others and as they were pretty much continuations, I think it would have been better to read them closer together. Now onto another series read, a chunkster and a buddy read combined with The Angel's Game
I finished a couple of books in the last two days - The Cabinet of Curiosities and The Way of Shadows, both were chunkster reads.I started The Angel's Game which is both a chunkster and a buddy read. I had been planning to start Tiger's Curse for the monthly challenge, but I bought Spider Woman's Daughter on the Kindle Daily Deal today. So now I'm thinking that I should scrap Tiger's Curse because Spider Woman would count towards both the monthly challenge and the monthly group read. Decisions, decisions. If I scrap Tiger's Curse, I'll start listening to Brimstone, which is also a chunkster read.

Move over other books on my wishlist to make room for this one, and for Sarah's Dean Koontz series.
Change of plans. I checked out the whispersync price on Audible for Spider Woman's Daughter. It was $4.99, and I have a $10.00 coupon. So for $2.99, I got the Kindle edition and the audiobook. I'm stoked! I will start listening to it today.
