Rebecca | 225 comments I normally read books about vampires, but after watching season 1 of Witches of East End I'm wanting to read something that mainly focuses on witches. I know that the show is based on a book series, but the series reviews are mixed. Any recommendations on a really good series about witches?

Sally Ember (sallyemberedd) | 8 comments Deborah Harkness' series has 2 volumes already and is excellent. I've added them here: A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night. Best to you!

Danielle | 5 comments Tales from Rugosa Coven by Sarah Avery is really good. It was just published by Dark Quest Books. No one has added it to GoodReads yet, but I'm about to rectify that.

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 451 comments I enjoyed The Donovan Legacy Charmed & Enchanted (Donovans #3 & 4) by Nora Roberts by Nora Roberts. I know she's got a few more series (short ones-three or four books) that deal with the paranormal; and I'm sure at least one of them is about witches, but I haven't read them.

Jute | 7 comments If you like lots of sex and don't object to some bdsm you might like Something About Witches I mention the sex in case that's something you don't care for, because the story in this book, in my opinion is actually really good.

Danielle | 5 comments Tales from Rugosa Coven

This is the book I was mentioning...

I second this series it is by far my favorite. It does have a ton of historical detail but it is fabulous and so worth the read.

As for the Witched of East End series, I wouldn't't waste my time on it, I read it and it was okay but since you have already watched the tv series and it is different from the books, I wouldn't try to read it.

The Three Island Trilogy by Nora Roberts is also really good but has lots of romance so if that isn't your thing then I wouldn't pick it up.

Dance Upon the Air (Three Sisters Island, #1) by Nora Roberts Heaven and Earth (Three Sisters Island, #2) by Nora Roberts Face the Fire (Three Sisters Island, #3) by Nora Roberts

Paganalexandria | 238 comments My holy trail of witch fiction is Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches series The Witching Hour, Lasher, and Taltos. If you are looking for more of a UF/paranormal romance vibe, try Anya Bast's Elemental Witch series Witch Fire, Witch Blood, Witch Fury, and Witch Heart. Both series are complete.

Charmed & Dangerous This is the first in a series. It's got humour and interconnects with another series.

message 12: by RabidReader (new)

RabidReader (RabidReaderX) | 10 comments I think your set. Recommend Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night as well. Especially if you also like vampires. Read the books before the movie, which is in early production and likely to be crap (each the books are 600+ pages, too much for a single movie).

message 13: by Manvir (new)

Manvir (lucyheartfilia) These are some of the books I've read with Witches as main characters:
Would-Be Witch by Kimberly Frost Barely Bewitched by Kimberly Frost Halfway Hexed by Kimberly Frost

Casting Spells (Sugar Maple, #1) by Barbara Bretton There's more in the series but I've only read the first one so far.

Never Again (Wizards of Nevermore, #1) by Michele Bardsley Now or Never (Wizards of Nevermore, #2) by Michele Bardsley

Not sure if you would be interested in this also but the main character is half mage, half vamp. The series is also complete.
Red-Headed Stepchild (Sabina Kane, #1) by Jaye Wells The Mage in Black (Sabina Kane, #2) by Jaye Wells Green-Eyed Demon (Sabina Kane, #3) by Jaye Wells Silver-Tongued Devil (Sabina Kane, #4) by Jaye Wells Blue-Blooded Vamp (Sabina Kane, #5) by Jaye Wells

I also recommend the Hollows/Rachel Morgan series that Joseph previously posted about.

There are other books to go along with Wyrd Sisters. And, for YA/juvenile there is also the Tiffany Aching series. The Wee Free Men is the first book in that series. (It's also book #30 in the Disk World series, as Wyrd Sisters is #6.

Ok, I can NOT believe that this hasn't come up yet. Witch World by Andre Norton. Although to be precise--there are something like 30 books in the series. Not all have the title Witches in them, some have others--shapeshifters, flying humanoids that are about 18 inches high, green skinned nature spirits. . . All kinds and shapes of beings. The series also has a sci-fi feel to it, as well as a bit of a fantasy feel. But it really is a good series. Norton tells a good story.
