I am about half way through The Eye of Jade A Mei Wang Mystery and finding it very interesting. Not exactly what I expected. There is a mystery to be solved but there are cultural descriptions and psychological musings - think Maisie Dobbs and a little Precious Ramotswe but in China.

Hayes, I was missing reading in Italian so much, that I made sure to have at least two books in Italian with me, before I came back from Italy yesterday night!

While I was in Italy this week I read Scarpetta. I am getting used to her new writing style and loved the book!

Now I am reading Io uccido.. I have been told it is really good. In english it is, I kill by Faletti.

I had to put "Shadow" on hold while I read my bookrings. I'll read it when I get back from the summer trip... use it as escape when I'm at the MIL's house in August!!

I just finished the second in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series called Tears of the Giraffe. I liked it just as much as the first in the series. They are nice, gentle mysteries with the African setting and culture as an ever-present background to the story. Precious Ramotswe is the perfect lady detective. She is intuitive, smart, moral, independant yet caring, and, in her own words, "traditionally built." :)

I just finished the non-fiction book, The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson, and it was fantastic! The World's Fair in Chicago of 1893, all of the genius that went with that, and the monstrous serial killer that preyed on young women. The book's narrative style lends it to very readable accounting.

I just finished Look Again by Lisa Scottoline and loved it. The next on my list is The 8th Confession by James Patterson. I hope it's as good as the last 7 Women's murder clubs.

How did you like Look Again? I really like Scottoline but the book is about a 3.25. Only because some of my pet peeves are in this book.

I have only finished 3rd degree in the series and a little mad at Patterson right now.

I'm reading the latest Mary Higgins Clark, Just Take My Heart A Novel. Her books, though usually predictable, are always a nice read. I needed something not too demanding, as I just finished the non-fiction The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson--great read, but so many facts I wanted to absorb. With getting ready to go on vacation the end of this week, I also needed something that wasn't going to require too much concentration. I'm thinking of taking The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey with me on vacation, along with a non-fiction book dealing with the vanishing princes of that book, The Princes in the Tower by Alison Weir.

The Messenger about 1/4 done, this book is strange. I love her series with Irene, but this is a stand alone. Lots of hints at things, but nothing is conclusive and right now it is a chore to read

and the car book is Nightshadejust started but already feell like it is time to catch up with an old group of friends.

Heather, I have had The Princes in the Tower for ages. I guess it has been waiting for the right time for me to read it. I hope that time will be now with the Josephine Tey book as incentive.

In the Last Analysis is quite a period piece. And boy do they smoke and drink with abandon in it. A fun read so far.

I just finished The Eye of Jade A Mei Wang Mystery. It started out strong, sort of lagged in the middle, but did pick up at the end. Still it was an interesting setting and I did like Mei Wang so I will probably look for the second in this series. Maybe it was just "first book itis" and the next will be a little more polished.

I'm reading a non-mystery novel at the moment, The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. It's over 700 pages, and I'm afraid it will take me forever to read. But I am enjoying the story.

I hope you enjoy this series by Deanna Raybourn, Allison. I've read the three out so far, with the 2nd and 3rd ones being Silent in the Sanctuary and Silent On The Moor. I've enjoyed all three, but I think #2 and #3 are where things really start happening more. #1 helps to set everything up. Enjoy.

I just finished Just Take My Heart A Novel by Mary Higgins Clark. I'm either going to start The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey or The Cater Street Hangman by Anne Perry on the plane today, as I start a 10-day vacation. I probably will be out of touch during most or all of that time.

Couldn't get into Nip n Tuck - Kathy Lette. Tried to read The Boy who taught the Beekeeper to Read - Susan Hill couldn't get into that neither. Now reading Succubus Blues - Richelle Mead which I am finding really good, not my usual kind of book. Need to read the series for the last book to be sent off in a swap and book 3 is awaiting at the local library for me.

I just finished On What Grounds. I really enjoyed it. Coffee and a murder mystery - what's not to love. I am currently reading The Sudoku Murder A Katie McDonald Mystery. So far this book is just ok.

Since reading all the Dennis Lehane, Laura Lippman and almost all the Laurie B King books in their respective series in the past few months, I'm on the hunt for a new mystery series... to that end I've recently read John Connelly first entry (Every Dead Thing- Charlie Parker-- tad gruesome) and John Sandford's first entry, Silent Prey (Lucas Davenport). Taking the next one on vacation-- great beach read.

Hi Heidi, If you like historical fiction as well as mysteries I would recomment Medicus A Novel of the Roman Empire by Ruth Downie, An Unholy Alliance by Susanna Gregory, and Dissolution by C J Sansom.

If you like the Roman period, Steven Saylor's books are fun.

I agree about Steven Saylor. I bought one of his books without really realizing what it was and have only read that one for now but it was great!

I need to read this series, too. I recently saw the first book in an HBO show; it was great. I think maybe this is a new series on there.

Heather, I know what you mean about it fitting your mood. After reading The Devil in the White City, I needed something a little lighter (if murder in any form can be lighter), so I went with the Mary Higgins Clark latest, Just Take My Heart.

I'm about to start the first entry in a Stuart Woods detective series... anyone else read those? I can't remember the main character, but I'm hoping it's worth taking to the beach this weekend.

There are some other series out there not as well known as others.

I enjoy the Elvis Cole series by Robert Crais.
I also like Mike McGarrity's Kevin Kerney series. These take place in New Mexico.
There is also the Cork O'Conner series by William Kent Krueger.

I just finished The Scarecrow by Michael Connelly. I liked it, however, I am not as excited about the main character in this series (Jack McEnvoy) as I am with Harry Bosch. I am surprised at how this book ended. Connelly is very obviously planning a sequel.

I am going to switch to some general fiction and start Downtown by Anne Rivers Siddons today. She is one of my all time favorite authors.

Harlan Coben Myron is main character, sports agent ( but not sport heavy) has great sidekick

Kathy Reichsforensics, The tv show BONES is the younger years, this is later years, taikes place in Canada and the North ( or maybe south) carolina
Karin Slaughter gritty and violent, but very well wrote and researched

Tess Gerritsenanother series, female cop in BOston, unique cases with serial killers

I also recommend the non Series of Harlan Coben
