I already said its probably brotherly affection... but Rick is vague it probably can be interpreted both ways, Authors are notorious for having one thing having a double meaning. When you think its means one thing.... you find out the other meaning.

message 1202: by [deleted user] (new)

It's not brotherly affection. Eros wouldn't have approached Nico if it weren't love. Why would Eros have made Nico confess if it weren't love that Nico felt for Percy?

message 1203: by Cherie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cherie Yeah, I don't like books to have any sex (Herero/homo) unless I'm aware of it before reading the book. For example I was aware the game of thrones had sex scenes in it before I started reading. Luckily we don't have to worry about that in HoO because Rick says he keeps it innocent (holding hands, small kisses, etc)

message 1204: by Cherie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cherie @kevin yes I did read it. That is precisely why I mentioned that it is important for people to understand that homosexuals are just regular people, just with a different lifestyle. People need to learn to understand that different people have different lifestyles and that's okay.

Kevin Cherie wrote: "You are using a slippery slope fallacy. Representing homosexual characters in children's literature will not cause kids to become homosexual,..."

Did anything in my comment imply that? All i am saying is for you to talk about gays and Heteros is for sexual preference to be introduced.

Unlike race there is no outward way to differentiate between the two groups(unless you count clothing mannerisms etc etc etc) THUS you WILL have to talk about sexuality of BOTH kinds ending up with kids wanting to "try" what they read in the books. I mean they probably gonna wanna try it when they heard about it from another source... but can you imagine what would happen to an author who put sexuality in a kids book? How does it get past censors(are their book censors like movies? tv shows?).

so? kids try drugs and alcohol and that is WAYYYY more important than "trying" to be gay. One simply does not "Try" to be gay? what the hell?

message 1207: by Cherie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cherie @kevin, Heterosexuality is sexuality. Maybe what you are saying is that there shouldn't be any sexuality in the books at all? In which case I respectfully disagree. As long as it is innocent and there are no sexual implications I don't see what it hurts, kids see people kiss and hold hands all the time. The characters in the books are old enough to explore romantic feelings.

message 1208: by Kevin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kevin H99 wrote: "Were the characters at least present in the books before she put that nice little scene in there? :/ ..."

She went SOOO off track with the books its like the Main Character (view spoiler) seriously. It was like a "power" grab and the main characters were there, the guy who "mounted"(it was an actual mounting) the other was this OLD OLD vamp and sexuality was probably frowned upon then too but he came from a time that you can do what you want.... it was hinted that he liked guys or w/e but i never thought she would do that..i mean the 200 page straight sex out of a 300 page book(i don't know if i am joking or not but the sex is too damn high!) is tiresome as it is already.

If you don't know who am i talking about with all the hints i gave you.... We probably don't read the same books.

message 1209: by Kevin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kevin Avalon wrote: "Why would Eros have made Nico confess if it weren't love that Nico felt for Percy? "

Because he likes fudging with people?
He knew it would make Nico uncomfortable to say he admires Percy(in Nico's time you probably couldn't say how much you admired another guy who wasn't a family member idk) and Ero probably gets a "chubby" when he forces people to admit feelings for others. I mean admiration is just a weaker version of love right?

I might come across as a douche here Blogger but are you one the nuts in this thread looking to start fights with people when you think you read something or want to believe what you read was something offensive to you?

Did i say ANYTHING about "trying to be gay" i was talking about sexuality "both" at a young age, you give kids the tools to do something they probably going to take it up.
This is making me think you have poor comprehension skills blogger.

I didn't find that offensive. More confusing but thank you for pointing that out. Oh and my skills are perfectly adequate so I sincerely hope you have a better way of telling someone they have been mistaken. P.s you do come off as a douche but I have to admit you do make great points but still, try not to regard us as mere kids

I agree it's a "teen/young adult" series you can put it in people around that age knows(or heard) what's what.
What i was getting at is putting sexuality in Juvenile books.

Hence the "5 year old orgies" reference.

message 1213: by [deleted user] (new)

Kevin, I don't think Eros would have even bothered approaching Nico if it weren't love. Eros is the god of love. He doesn't care about admiration, even if you consider it a weaker form of love. I think he cares more about romantic love.

message 1214: by Kevin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kevin Avalon wrote: "I think he cares more about romantic love. ..."

He is also known for fudging with people and forcing you to fall in love.

He did try to stick a few arrows in Jason/Nico can't remember which.

And if anyone didn't see it before Ero can make or Cupid could make you gay if he wished it, you know the whole forcing you to fall in love thing.

message 1224: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Honestly, the fact that Rick Riordan put a gay character in the story doesn't really bother me. The fact that it is Nico and Percy as the OPT is what bugs me. And Nico being gay isn't even that bad. It's the fact that he'll never get to be with Percy, because there is literally noooo chance. And it sucks. It's not fair, I mean it's like they want him to be unhappy. Maybe if he was gay for a random guy. Idk. I'm just really having the feels. And it hurts. I just cant rap my head around it. I'm literally going crazy. Is anyone else feeling this way? please let me know. I need to vent.

message 1225: by [deleted user] (new)

You're not the only one Hannah. I'm pretty sure a lot of other people are feeling this way (including me). Poor Nico. I feel so bad for him because Percy just can't return the feelings Nico has for him ): It's like Nico is there just to get hurt.

message 1227: by Just (new)

Just Someone If improving the world and making gays feel better was his only genuine motive, can i ask then why didn't captain goody 2 shoes riordan not mention another much more important topic in the Kane chronicles?islamaphobia?it is much more relevant and he really could have done some good work by showing how Muslims, Arabs, south Asians, and others face hatred and discrimination at many instances in the west and all over the world.see that would have been much more logical from the book`s point of view because there were Muslim characters, unlike in Nico`s case for whose behavior there are tons of better explanations. Why didn't Riordan mention anti muslim discrimination ?

message 1228: by Just (new)

Just Someone Another thing that frustrated me was that in a book based on Greek and Egyptian mythology, why were there no bloody Native Greek protagonists or at least of Greek ancestry?(i was especially angry that in Kane chronicles the protagonists had to be part British)

message 1229: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah I actually agree with you Just. I have a Muslim friend, Azizah, and we were recently talking about how there is no Muslim character in the book. A lot of books never mention a Muslim character. I think the only time Rick mentioned something like that was with Medusa (he said she looked middle eastern), but Medusa ended up beheaded... Azizah got bullied a lot and many people called her a "terrorist" because of her religion. It's not fair for her. I wish someone would add a Muslim character to make them realize that Muslims can be heroes too. There are Mexicans, Asians, native Americans, blacks, etc but I never see a character with a headscarf. Azizah (and other Muslims, I'm sure) feel alone. I'm sure that Rick has many Muslim readers but he won't add a Muslim character. This kinda bugged me a lot because I'm really close with Azizah and it bothers her.

Nope, I never identified with any of the characters I just liked the mythos that Rick made and the world.

Sometimes things were childish but I summed it up as the price to pay for getting my fill of Greek Gods.

Kevin Just wrote: "why were there no bloody Native Greek protagonists or at least of Greek ancestry?..."

Aren't the Kane's suppose to have "old blood" and correct me if I am wrong but the book was about EGYPTIANS not GREEKS, Greeks went in and ransacked Egypt why would it focus on them?
You already have a Greek series, this was different the only reason Greeks were mentioned was because they had a hand in the downfall of Egypt(not all their fault just a hand).
It like expecting the new Norse series to be focusing on Greeks too.

-Greeks
-Egyptians
-Romans
-Norse
All of these might touch the others at some point, but they are separate series.

Just wrote: "i was especially angry that in Kane chronicles the protagonists had to be part British"

Isn't most of the Egyptian history stored in other parts of the world except Egypt itself? It makes sense to have them over there, seeing as most of the items are in museums.

message 1233: by Kevin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kevin H99 wrote: "Kevin, Just wants people of Greek ancestry in The Heroes of Olympus, not The Kane Chronicles."

Ahhh but isn't the book suppose to be about Romans? My comment still stands, its a book about Romans and doesn't Frank(Mar's son) have "old blood" too?

Cherie Hey, if they don't want to continue with the series because of this then fine. It's their loss, we don't want them in the fandom anyways ;)

Andrew Fuller All hail, Nico di Angelo... You brave son of a bitch.
It takes guts to admit that. Especially when forced into it.
hell, I remember when I had to do the very same thing. At the same age... not easy.
Ps... ABOUT DAMN TIME!!! Beating around the bush aside, I think we've all figured that Nico was gay for some time now. I mean, the only way RR. could have made that clearer would have been for Nico to have I'M GAY written in neon lights across his forehead! Now excuse me while I rub nice juicy "I told you so" in my friends' face.

I have to say I disagree with you, about a gay character being inappropriate. There are plenty of gay CHILDREN. A lot of kids are discovering that they are attracted to the same sex and it's very healthy for them to have a fictional character they are fond of, and may even admire, be homosexual as well.

I don't really see how it would matter if it's made for younger kids. Not only are there children who are homosexual, there are children who have been raised by gay couples.

Yubrine obviously had too much sugar. I get like that when I eat a lot of chocolate xD And I am a chocolate addict so I think you can come to conclusion of how I'm usually like. All I really want is for Nico to be happy. I also want him to have his own POV but I especially want to see a real smile on his face. He needs to stop with those humorless smiles. I don't even know if you should consider that a smile... I also want a POV because I want to know what's going on inside that moody head of his. What is he thinking about all the time? Does everyone else feel this way or am I just a very curious person? Rick should make Nico a happy person at the end. Nico is always so reserved and moody and lonely. Turn that frown upside down, Nico. Be happy! Sunshine and lollipops.

message 1246: by [deleted user] (new)

Out of every character in the whole series, Nico deserves the happiest ending. He went through so much. This is the least Rick can do !
