I just finished Moby-Dick; or, The Whale. It took a long time to get through, but it was worth it!

This is the third in the USA Trilogy on the 1001 List."
what did you think? I read the first one which is 1929 or something like that, I dont even remember what it was about or how good it was.
Just finished The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy. Dark, sleazy, and often offensive. Despite that, I was suprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did.
I finished I'm Not Scared. I liked it overall except for the ending but I'm not sure why it is on the list.
I also finished The Wonderful O. I enjoyed it more than the other James Thurber book on the list, The 13 Clocks, but I'm also not sure why it is a list book. Like The 13 Clocks it is kind of a fairy tale so it would make more sense on the children's books list.

"
Yep, I also loved The Lady in White! Super happy with both these Collins titles.
Finished George Orwell's Coming Up For Air. Now, in my 40's, I could really relate. I strongly believe I would NOT have enjoyed much in my previous decades.
I recently finished Portnoy's Complaint. Care to read someone's personal rant about his sex life anyone?
Finished Max Havelaar: Or the Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company by Multatuli. Poorly translated into English. Perhaps it is better in Dutch.
Yrinsyde wrote: "I recently finished Portnoy's Complaint. Care to read someone's personal rant about his sex life anyone?"Hah I remember that stupid book, pretty much all about sex and masturbation, how is that a timeless piece? Over rated!!!! I havent read another Roth since then.
I just finished The Candle in the Wind, the final book of The Once and Future King and also the best one.
In Cold Blood As a friend of mine recently stated, I wish I'd had Capote's gift of run-on sentences in grad school for all those research papers.
The Story of Lucy Gault by William Trevor. SO sad, and SO good. As a short story writer, Trevor knows how to make a sentence pack a punch, even in novel form.
Steve wrote: "Yrinsyde ... Hah I remember that stupid book, pretty much all about sex and masturbat..."Yes! At first I was going eeuurrggh. This is the second Roth book I've read and my opinion of his work (awful pretentious stuff) hasn't changed.
Of Mice and Men - 1939 - in on TCM - Turner Classic Movies tonight at 8:00 PM if anyone is interested
Just finished Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. I gave it 3 stars, but I didn't really enjoy reading the book. I did like the idea of the book of each chapter relating to a character in the previous chapter.
Colleen wrote: "Just finished Grapes Of Wrath. Oh my! I think I have a new favourite :)"Yeah Grapes of Wrath is mindblowing! I had dreams/nightmares about it after I read it
Karina wrote: "Finally finished The Last of the Mohicans. So painful. But I finished."Just curious, why painful? I also found it so, just untenably long and tedious. Might have been great at 1/3 of its length.
Finished Oliver Twist (horrible, antisemitic, book); Under the Volcano *extremely well-written, but the plot is a little incomprehensible); Suite Française (which was pretty good) and The Sorrows of Young Werther (which was fun, but towards the end frightfully sentimental).
Last night I finished There but for the by Ali Smith. I was very sceptical about it in the beginning because I didn't like her other list book too much but this one turned out pretty good.
Money: A Suicide Note.** It was okay. After this and London Fields, I think Amis is just not my cup of tea. But I'll still try the other list books. Feeling neutral, not negative, towards the author so far.

I feel the same way about Amis. I'm giving him just one more chance after London Fields before I strike him off. Thinking I'll go with Time's Arrow.

Is his fathers stories any better? Different? I will have to try them out, although I kind of liked Money.
Finished Mary Barton last night. What a great story, even if a touch sentimental in places. Can't wait to read her other books.
Just finished Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451... I'm not a science fiction fan...although I appreciate the book's message about censorship and the dumbing down of society.
love audiobooks - finished both Elegance of the Hedgehog & Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde. I am just about to pick up All Along The Western Front & Remains of the Day
I just finished CANDIDE by Voltaire yesterday. Fun, quick read. A lot more biting satire than I'd been expecting. Only 1115 to go (complete lists). App says I'll be done in 12 years. We'll see.
Just finished The Vicar of Wakefield. They traveled through all the misfortune to find the greatest happiness.
A true tale, and very enjoyable. :-)
The Old Man and the Sea, arrived in the mail this morning from another bookcrosser.and finished reading it the same morning ;-)
Finished A Gate at the Stairs, the first List book I rated only one star and hopefully also the last one.
