Maddy | 86 comments A few weeks ago, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Beautifully illustrated, but made me a bit sad.

Today, Dracula by Bram Stoker. A quality Halloween book!

The Club Dumas by Arturo Pérez-Reverte of Spain. It's better if you have read The Three Musketeers previously, but I had not and still enjoyed it.

That was also the last list book I finished. I didn't care for it, but I was sick while reading it, so I might not have gotten it.

The Time of the Hero by Mario Vargas Llosa of Peru. 4 stars for me. Original title in Spanish: La Ciudad y los Perros (The City and the Dogs- "the dogs" refers to a group of boys at a military academy). I was reading this concurrently with the last book I posted.

And with that I complete the three Poe stories on the list. Admittedly an easy achievement.

What did you think of Annie John? I just picked it up from the library.

Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wow! What a great read. Recommended for people who enjoy big stories like Gravity's Rainbow and Vanity Fair. This may send me off to look for more of the big books om the list! I will certainly be reading more Rushdie!

Paradise of the Blind by Duong Thu Huong of Vietnam. Really liked it.

Karina | 401 comments The Cider House Rules by John Irving

The book was beautifully written but I found parts of the latter half to be tedious. Also, the Homer/Wally/Candy relationship was frustrating to read.

A quick, warm and pleasant read filled with a subtle British humour which although it didn't actually make me laugh out loud, I did read it with a smile but like all the best comedy, the book's tragedy rings true with a much wider audience that still resonates today.

I finished Play It As It Lays by Joan Didion and Gabriel's Gift by Hanif Kureishi. Both were the final list books by each author for me and also the works by them I liked best.

This was my second to last list book! It's very different from what I would read independently but has made me think.
How did you like it?

Angel | 3 comments The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
It was so, so good. I've had to take a break from fiction after this one lol

Like you, I probably wouldn't have chosen this book myself, but I did find it fascinating and hard to put down (I listened to the audiobook). It is supposed to be semi-autobiographical and I found his service in World War I and in the French colony quite interesting. The galley slave section was a little unbelievable. His view of America was intriguing. His career as a doctor and at the clinic seemed the most realistic. Overall I enjoyed it.
