message 1002: by Joy (new)

Joy Gerbode (wingsofjoy) I am currently reading Crewel World ... just recently read The Art of Racing in the Rain (very good!) and A Year on Ladybug Farm (very good!) I'm finishing up April challenges today and tomorrow, and then looking forward to reading The Sound and the Fury, as it will help me with a couple of May challenges, as well as be the group read here!

message 1003: by Casey (new)

Casey (caseynanako) | 10 comments I'm actually reading a few things at the moment, but Up In The Air by Walter Kirn and Bumped by Megan McCafferty (to review for my blog/vlog) are the main ones.

message 1004: by Joy (new)

Joy Gerbode (wingsofjoy) Is anyone else reading The Sound and The Fury yet? I am on page 46 ... about halfway through the first chapter, and I'm not making much sense out of it so far. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone else who is tackling it!

Douglas (douglaswjacobson) | 3 comments The Katyn Order: A Novel

I am pleased to announce the release of my newest historical novel set in WW2. THE KATYN ORDER is a story of courage, of love, and a quest for redemption in the aftermath of one of history's most heinous war crimes.
Publisher's Weekly said, "Jacobson follows his debut, Night of Flames, with another solid WW2 thriller."
Now available wherever books are sold.

Casey (caseynanako) | 10 comments I'm back to reading Shades of Grey for the moment, and will hopefully finish it to review by next Monday. It's taking me quite a while, unfortunately.

message 1007: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished reading The Book Thief a few weeks ago. The book was selected for our library discussion group. I had trouble getting into it, but after the first 50 pages or so, then I really started to like it.

Now I am reading The Girls from Ames which I probably will finish by Tuesday. After that I'll once again attempt to finish Freedom by Jonathan Franzen, which I gave up on a few months ago.

message 1008: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker It's been horrible! I haven't finished but one book all year despite starting many really good ones. Right now I'm reading Leaves of Grass, Corelli's Mandolin, and The Worn Out Woman. I'm going to do my Rory-ish best to finish Leave of Grass.

Lots of controversy over whether much of this is fictionalized despite some basis in truth. Just a heads up for anyone picking it up now. I've had a copy from way back for a group read but souldn't get into it at all. While the proverb -- custom of three cups of tea appeals -- this book was not my cup of tea!

And when you finish -- you must locate the Rory group discussion in the previous discussion here and read it -- we had a wonderful discussion on that one. Enjoy both the book and the thread on it here. Jane Eyre has been a favorite of mine from my first reading at around age 12 and I've reread a few times since.

Thanks Dottie, I shall go and look for that now. I finished the book on Wednesday and I loved it so much!
Reading Atonement now.

message 1016: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I finished Our Man in Havana. It was really good. I'm going to read on Out of Africa and Shadows on the Grass (perhaps finishing) and try to read Light in August. I find myself asking what Rory would read as I'm picking out a book that isn't on the list. I'm such a nerd!

Jamie (moodreadingmagic) Mary Kay wrote: "Let me know what you think - I read it but didn't like it at all. "

I definitely will! I remember enjoying it in high school and I love magic realism so I think I'll love it. But I can see why people wouldn't like magic realism.

message 1028: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Currently reading One Day and Dune.

message 1029: by Nikoline (new)

Nikoline (annenikoline) Right now I'm reading Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. It's a classic and a must read, so I decided the time had finally come for me to read it, but lately have been doing so much school work I haven't had the time to really get started on any books. Hopefully that will change soon.

message 1030: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Currently reading Warbreaker and The Shadow Rising.

I felt the same thing about Wuthering Heights, Anne, and can honestly say I hated it and wish I hadn't bothered. I didn't like the characters and the story just didn't flow for me...Hope this doesn't put you off; it's obviously a classic for a reason and it just didn't click for me.

message 1031: by Audrey (new)

Rhonda | 1 comments Humiliation by Wayne Koestenbaum
There is no shame in reading this innovative and thoughtful work. Humiliation is an embarrassment of riches. Highly recommended. I just saw a giveaway posted at new york journal of books, great for free, but worth the money too.

message 1038: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I've been reading Dracula lately. My hope is to finish by Halloween. I might have a shot at making it! I love how the story is told--through journals, letters, newspaper clippings. I can't wait to see what happens.

message 1039: by Antje (new)

Antje | 10 comments I just started with reading books from the "Rory list" and my first one was Moby-Dick. Surprised it hasn't been read by this group, as it is mentioned early in Season 1 - but then, there are soooo many possible choices. Anyhow, if anyone is interested, here is my review

message 1040: by Montana (new)

Montana | 8 comments Jane Eyre is a classic piece of literature, BUT it has its dry moments. I understand Bronte's concept for the novel, but some moments in the book are quite boring.

message 1041: by Diana (new)

Diana I'm currently taking a break from Wizard's First Rule and started The Belly Dancer last night. I haven't gotten very far I was just suddenly not in the mood to read anymore.

I just finished reading a really amazing book called The Pursuit of Cool. I could not put it down, the characters totally sucked me in! And there is a lot of 80s pop culture in it. It's all about what "cool" really means. Highly recommended.
