Zara's Retreat | 2365 comments Buddy reads are a good way for members to choose which books they would like to read and discuss with other members in the group. Beginning right now we are going to change up the Buddy Read section a bit to make it less limited!

Buddy Reads
This section is for all of our members who are interested in reading with a buddy or 2 or 3! All you have to do is:

1) Post which book you would like to read (Link or cover is fine).
2) Post the dates you intend to read the book (ex: Month of July, July 1 - July 15, etc.).
3) If you are interested in joining a nominated book, post which book you are interested in reading (Name and Link/Cover of Book).
4) I will create a thread for discussion of each of the Buddy Reads for the book and those interested.

This new way of Buddy Reads takes away the limit of three per month (series/non-series). Feel free to join in more than one buddy read at a time. In fact, it is highly encouraged. The more participation we have the more fun we will have!

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments "Beginning in July" - so this thread is not for buddy read suggestions/invitations to take place before July 2014? (Just want to clarify, I'm not sure I'm reading this correctly!)

Sorry Karina. I obviously missed that bit when I did the cut and paste of Ashley's previous post. My apologies. I'll edit that to make it read as being current from now. Please forgive me.

message 4: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments No worries, Zara - I thought it was worth asking. :)

Anyway, I've got one!

I would like to read The Emperor of All Maladies - let's say through November. It's a pretty hefty book. If anyone would like to read it with me, but can't make it happen in November, I'm perfectly happy to change the month.

message 5: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments YES, PLEASE. I've been wanting to read that for ages, but it's so intimidating. I would love to read it as a buddy read.

message 6: by Zara's Retreat (new)

Zara's Retreat | 2365 comments Kara and Karina. I've noted this buddy read for November. Good luck.

message 7: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments It's a long one. Can we have it for both October and November?

Would anyone like to join us? It's supposed to be a really great science nonfiction book.

message 8: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments Kara: October and November works well for me, let's do it like that!

message 14: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty Anyone interested in reading Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris sometime in the near future?

message 15: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments I am looking to read The Thorn Birds probably starting in the middle to end of next week.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Jodi, I read The Thorn Birds when it first came out and watched the TV mini-series with Richard Chamberlain many times. I'd join you, but I have too many books I've not yet read to do a re-read right now. If you've never read it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

I have never read the book but I remember being young and watching the mini-series with my mom. I don't remember much about it except there was a priest and I think he falls in love. I am looking forward to reading it.

message 18: by Adriana (last edited Sep 21, 2013 05:35PM) (new)

Adriana | 3888 comments Yes!!! Thanks Jodi and Lianne :D Can't wait to read Carrie with you girls! It's going to be a great October read.

message 19: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments I really like buddy reads and it has been many many years since I have read a Stephen King book.

I bought The Shining really cheap at Costco today. It might be a double feature Stephen King month :))

I was considering a quick re-read of The Shining, as the sequel(!), Doctor Sleep, is out in a couple of days. :)

message 21: by Zara's Retreat (new)

Zara's Retreat | 2365 comments is The Shining and The Thorn Birds going to be October reads? Also is there still interest in the following:

Middlemarch
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
Fatherland?

If there is any interest in the three above mentioned books what month/s would you like to read them in?

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Adriana wrote: "I wouldn't mind reading The Shining and Carrie too Jodi and Karina."

Great Adriana and Karina! I wasn't listing The Shining as a buddy read necessarily. I was just excited about the great buy I got. So do you want to do both in October? It can be a Stephen King double feature.

As Karina said, Part 2 of The Shining is coming out soon.

message 26: by Jodi (last edited Sep 22, 2013 11:31AM) (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments @ Zara, I haven't had any interest in anyone joining me for The Thorn Birds, so as of now, it isn't a buddy read.

It looks like Adriana, Lianne and I are doing a buddy read for Carrie.
Adriana, Karina and I are doing The Shining as a buddy read and hopefully others will join in with both Stephen King books.

message 27: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3888 comments I would like to do both books for October for a Stephen King feature!

message 28: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments That sounds like we are in for a Spooky October Adriana! I can't wait.

message 29: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (liannevanroekel) | 245 comments I think I may join you all on The Shining as well, since it has been on my TBR pile for ages!

Carrie is on the list which is why I didn't mention it. The ones I mentioned above were those ones that I wasn't clear about. Sorry for the confusion.

message 31: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I'll join in with The Shining too.

Stefani - SpelingExpirt (speling_expirt) | 585 comments If anyone is still interested in reading Fatherland I'm up for reading it whenever.

I read two of Harris' other books recently and loved them.

Hi Stefani,

I think Craig was interested in this one. Let me know what month suits you both.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Fatherland would work for one of my challenges in another group. I could join in with this one, too, preferably in October.

OK Theresa. I'll mark Fatherland down for October then. Will October work for you Craig and Stefani?

message 36: by Zara's Retreat (last edited Sep 24, 2013 07:55PM) (new)

Zara's Retreat | 2365 comments I'd be interested in reading Middlemarch but I would probably need to do it over three months due to the length of the book.

Anyone willing to do this over three months with me?

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Zara, when are you planning to start Middlemarch? I have the audiobook, which is almost 36 hours long. 12 hours a month would be no problem for me.

I was thinking of either next month or November so the end date would be December or January depending on when we started. Do either of these work for you? I've wanted to read this book for so long.

message 39: by Theresa~OctoberLace (last edited Sep 24, 2013 09:07PM) (new)

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Zara, among other books, I've got both The Emperor of All Maladies and Fatherland next month, so can we start Middlemarch in November?
