Aasia Abdali | 260 comments Haha Aakash u r right gulity as charged. I really am after the author. I am more of a classic reader. Classics have so much depth. The problem that i have with contemporary writers is that they usually have absolutely fantastic ideas. I mean they REALLY can think out of the box but usually their execution is poor.
Umera Ahmed is known name to us all and to be honest i am scared to say that she is a good writer but not a great writer. I hope nobody kills me or humiliate me publicly for expressing my point of view. But she is better than many so i have read quite a few of her work. I have read Khalid Hussaini. He is somewhat promising. Kher lets see

message 303: by Narjis (new)

Narjis Naqvi | 713 comments I haven't read the full task for today, but I started it. And found out these are the reasons of committing suicide and I'm not fan of suicide stories.
You guys have talked a lot about suicide above, it's really a lot so I haven't read all but read some views. But I think committing suicide is just an abnormal behavior, low mental health and of course result of uncontrollable teenage emotions, which I think are the reasons in the book as well, as she is starting with her first crush who ignored her(taking it to heart is being extra emotionaL).
Those who liked the book, forgive my sin of writing something negative. :P

haha!! #Aasia I like classics and Philosophy too and read selective authors only other and rare go for new ones!! Yea they write according to this age and putting todays culture so it will be classic for next generation ;).

I am reading her first novel and and first time of her work! :P so its going good! :)

Khalid Hosseni is good born in a state of wars and all that so he is all writing about those times and periods and expressing his culture in it!

#Narjis you are too good!! Emotions are wild horses! ;)
At peek in teenage!!! And you are good means no negative points and i agree with you!!
CAnt say anything about book now!!

message 305: by Aasia (new)

Aasia Abdali | 260 comments Dont associate the term classics with time yaar!
A classic is a book accepted as being exemplary or noteworthy, for example through an imprimatur such as being listed in a list of great books. A classic is a book that can stand through the test of time.
Now a days there are terms such as 'modern classics' and 'contemporary classics' is being used. Our beloved GoodReads even have a genre for that!

By the how fortunate to find someone who likes classics as well as philosophy! Philosophy is my new Love and so is PLATO!

message 306: by Aasia (new)

Aasia Abdali | 260 comments @ Narjis How old are you? :( you are merciless towards teenagers. its a difficult age!!!!

Well i am glad i am way passed that age! :)

message 307: by Omaid (new)

Omaid ibn Naimet | 215 comments Aasia, that sounds like a correct definition of classics. so then harry potter in that sense is a contemporary classic. but then the pre-20th century classics are unmatchable. which is why time is associated with classics by many.

message 308: by Aakash (new)

Aakash (mistyanon) | 5393 comments Mod
Yea I am telling the same, some books of today's culture that are master pieces and that will survive over time will be classics or that the other term modern classics for the people of 2070s or 3000s. And our culture that is the dawn of technology will be out dated and and they will have their own even more modern culture and technology or it will be post apocalypse age! ANd our ear would be considered the peek of modernism of all time on the earth by human:3 :P

message 309: by Omaid (new)

Omaid ibn Naimet | 215 comments I believe the post apocalypse age wouldn't be coming that soon. :) In our religion the wars to come before the end of the world will be fought on the most advanced machinery. And yes well for the people of those times Shakespeare's work will be as hard to understand for them, as it is for us now to understand the scriptures of socrates.

message 310: by zainab (new)

zainab (zainab_sheikh) | 771 comments I'm starting to like this book but I don't like her idea of suicide. I think she should've stood up for herself. I think that's the problem these days : the teenagers think that suicide is the only solution of the problem. Suicide is actually very stupid. Why did she give other people a chance to ruin her life? Everyone goes through depression, everyone gets bullied but you don't have to just give up your life. You have to wake up and move on. Stop giving people a chance to murder your life.
She could've brought joy or happiness to her life. She could start over again but she gave up really easily.
The idea of death can be beautiful but in real it is as horrible as it can be.

message 311: by zainab (new)

zainab (zainab_sheikh) | 771 comments I totally agree with you both and Zaynah that point about test is absolutely right. It's just a test of faith but we all should be patient because we know that Allah doesn't burden a soul beyond it can bear and we, humans, are really strong. You're right, Amna. She thought it was best for her but she was just an immature teenager.
There're many people in Pakistan who are suffering more than her but they're still living their life. They're trying to find the joy and happiness in it. Why? Because they know that they won't get the chance again. She had the life and she wasted it. There are so many people who want more time even one more minute to live but they don't get it so I would never consider suicide a best decision but I do agree with you, Amna.

Yea!! #Zainab they survive becasue they are Pakistani And Alas! she wasn't! :3 :P

Yea that's also true that Allah never gives over then the capacity of the person! :)

Its just that you have to be patient and have peace inside you! When that inner peace is lost and one encounters the inferiority complex and loses his self confidence then no one can save them but only thyself.

Sometimes death seems more beautiful than a bride ;) And worth falling for! :P

@Zaynah Yea have faith in Allah. ;)

@Amna hehe!!! Good points. Stimuli and stimulus ;)

@Omaid Yeah I agree with you!! But I have heard and read that the most advance machinery will get failed suddenly and war will be thought just like in iron ages!!

message 314: by Omaid (new)

Omaid ibn Naimet | 215 comments could be, as the two sealed nations yajooj and majooj, Gog and megog, they won't have the technology surely when they break through the barrier when the end of the world would be near. And that they would be the most fierce, blood thirsty and destructive people.

Nigham | 4042 comments Aakash wrote: "yea I know about them they are surrounded by iron walls!! Which they almost eat them and by the end of day the walls are self constructed again!"

We were discussing gravity with our teacher today and then we asked him to tell us something about it that we haven't heard before. He translated a verse of Quran, "... when the sky is split open; And it listens to the Command of its God and its obedience is fitting for it; And when the earth is flattened; And it throws out what is in it and becomes empty..."

And then said, there would be zero graviy on the Day of Judgement.... that's why mountains would be like clouds... flying in air... and earth would throw everything out...

How many of you already knew about that 'zero-gravity-thing'?

And how the book is going so far, have you finished the today's task?

message 317: by zainab (new)

zainab (zainab_sheikh) | 771 comments Also, the earth will be destroyed and everything will be destroyed and new and flat earth will be created.
The Day Of Judgement is really horrifying.
Death is also very scary. I hope you, Aakash, is saying it figuratively because you can never find peace or comfort in death.

message 318: by Aakash (new)

Aakash (mistyanon) | 5393 comments Mod
Come on #Zainab Don't curse the death!!! Its such a beautiful thing!!!

If you are discussing it from Islamic Point of view that its horrible and its like falling from sky etc etc. Yeah it is! But it would be only hard just because of our deeds rather then this Its the most important phase of ones life . Its annihilation of oneself from this world to the other! Without it we can not be transferred!

And then you might want to read the death of a martyr!! How is his death!!! He wont prefer life over death ever!!!

zainab (zainab_sheikh) | 771 comments Yeah, right. The death of martyr is the most beautiful and I'd do anything to die as a martyr.
And yup I'm talking about it from Islamic point of view.
For people who are good and pious, death will be easy for them and I want to be one of them but I'm just scared of what will happen in our grave.

message 332: by Zarish (new)

Zarish Fatima (zarishfatima94gmailcom) Reading this book.. I am liking the sync between the cassettes and the narrator.. lap I think this book is less about suicide and more about how people are mean to each other.. How everything we had reprecusions.. Also I do not believe she was coward. So many things were happening to her. she did not realize they all were linked much later.. She was a kid confused being hurt by other kids....

how selfish we get sometimes... for a few moments of fun and enjoyment we start playing with feelings of others without realizing how it will affect their lives!!!

We should always watch or words before we utter them..

As Hazrat Ali says(a.s), "A person takes only two years to start saying words(speaking) but it takes his whole life to know what is the appropriate Place and time for a certain word to be used."

And there is one another saying(narrator is out of mind); " Disgracing/making fun of someone(or maybe Muslim was used) is a worst sin than disgracing the Khana kaba"
