What are you reading? (Part 1)

The first book is weak but I really like the series and I think it develops in the rest of the books. The first book is just a stage setting so you have a bit of an idea of what the alternative world is all about. It has more action and more complex characters further along. I didn't find it that boring myself but I've just gotten to read the first book having started with #3 which is all the library had.

I have not read it but I tried to watch the movie based on it and could not finish it. I'm sure it would be a better read though. It's supposed to be a unique take on the vampire genre.

I really liked the movie until the ending which I didn't like at all.

I've got The Laughing Corpse on hold at the library. I can't wait to read it! I agree with you in a way, I think most of the first books in a good series are usually a little more dull than the following ones. I guess it is all of the world building and explaining?

Charlaine Harris is good at world-building when you're not looking. One of the best examples is when Sookie's friend is watching a reality show on tv sort of like What Not to Wear, but with vamps. Shows just how widespread the vamps' assimilation into human society has gone!

Windling always seems to get stories from the best authors (this book has a Charles de Lint story called 'Crow Road.")
I have to mention the lovely little bits of title art. A different sketch for each story. Nice.

But I suppose there are many series where people aren't pulled in by the main character, but by the world and supporting characters. I feel that way about Anita Blake sometimes.

I'm really curious to see more of Carter. And Hugh is awesome. But, Georgina mostly annoys or frustrates me. If the next book is as predictable, I'll be passing on the rest.

Mead's Dark Swan series is awesome. There are two books so far, starting with Storm Born. Don't let your frustrations with succubus deter you from reading that one. Action-packed and quite sexy.

I think you will really like The Graveyard Book, Melodie! I enjoyed it even more than Coraline. I did feel like the ending should have been longer, it seemed sort of abrupt. Let me know what you think when you are done.

Maybe I'll pick up her other series instead and see how I feel about that one.

I really enjoyed her Dark Swan series but not the succubus series. I read the first two succubus books and decided not to bother with the rest until I am completely out of other series to read. Dark Swan is great though, I recommend giving it a shot before writing off Mead completely.

Rachel is on a learning curve and Ivy is scary as is the whole vampire society but wait until you get to the demons in the later books. My comments about first books applies especially to this series. The first book is very weak because the world is being introduced. It gets better in my opinion in later books. This is NOT a hot sex UF, more of an adventure.
About the The Graveyard Book a big thumbs up from me. Its made me wish I had kids to read to. I also loved the illustrations.

I have never been able to like this series and I have read every one of them. Why I don't know. But I disliked the last one, White Witch, Black Curse, so much I'm not going to read any more of them. Jenks is great, but I've never liked Rachel and Ivy is one of the creepier vamps out there.

."
I finished The Graveyard Book this morning. It was a good book, but definitely a kids book.

Just finished it last night and enjoyed it alot."
I finished Bad Moon Rising on Friday night. Freakin FANTASTIC!! I hate that it takes soooooo long for the new ones to come out! lol
I also finished Coraline and Blue Bloods. I enjoyed them both.
I am now out of library books until at least Tuesday but I remembered I had Odd Thomas and Forever Odd from a yard sale (free) so I started Odd Thomas last night. Funny and dark...my kinda stuff.

On the Rachel Morgan topic, I love that series and have since the first book. :)

Glad I'm not alone in the woods. I'm looking forward to seeing how Rachel Morgan solves her 'demon' problem and is there a future with bad boy Trent?
Tanya Huff's stories also a favorite but I was disappointed in the TV series that it inspired.

I'm just the opposite. I loved the TV show, but wasn't all that crazy about the books. Kyle Schmid as Henry is one of the very hottest vamps ever, IMHO, as evidenced by my avatar!

What was the TV series?

What was the TV series?"
Crowgirl- I think they are talking about the series Blood Ties. It was inspired by Tanya Huffs Blood books. It about Vicki Peterson a private detective working with a Vampire named Henry. It was on the Lifetime channel for 2 seasons I think. It plays in reruns now. I think it's okay I watched a rerun the other night.

I won't argue that about Kyle Schmid in Blood Ties. They picked a good match for Henry Fitzroy. Short, arrogant and handsome (great hair) but I felt the plots were just rehashed 'Supernatural' concepts with a female x-cop instead of 2 brothers.
The books feature much more depth in Henry's character and powers while Henry was just a weak side note in the TV series. Couldn't have been that popular as it was dropped in mid-story and didn't include Henry's bi-sexual side at all or his sex with Vicki.
I watched all the episodes as they're on DVD and I'm a sucker for even bad vampire cinema. My friends who loved the old TV show 'Forever Knight' loved Blood Ties'. I'm more of a 'True Blood.' type of person.

.."
I never got into Forever Knight. I usually love anything with vampires, but that show never did anything for me. Leaving out the sex with Vicki part was a mistake, I think, even tho they couldn't have done a whole lot with it on Lifetime, but I didn't miss the bisexuality part! True Blood tops Blood Ties everytime, but as hot as Alex Skarsgard is as Eric, he'll never top Kyle as Henry.

THAT had me guffawing in public.

Here's one Forever Knight fan who wasn't impressed with Blood Ties. In fact, I haven't liked any vampire TV series as much as FK. You see, I believed that Nick Knight was as old as he was supposed to be. I didn't believe for a minute that the Henry Fitzroy on Blood Ties was once a Tudor era prince. Sorry.

I'm feeling your pain! I'm trying not to wake the kids up, and I almost spit coffee all over myself! I love it!

Wow. I had no idea Blood Ties was based on a book! Gotta check that out!
I had totally forgotten about Forever Knight. I thought it was so cheesy, but I still watched it!

Hope you like WICKED GAME. Was one of my favorites when I read it last year. The 2nd in the series, BAD TO THE BONE, is good, too.!

No, I don't recall any problems at all. It was just a really good book with a different take on vampires, which I liked.

I would never have seen elves and vampires as a combination for a story but I'm finding more anti-Tolkien elves in stories these days. Elves who just find humans repulsive. Well, I have to agree with that at times.
