I've finished Plainsong Plainsong (Plainsong, #1) by Kent Haruf a couple of days ago. Loved it.

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) (sandyj21) | 1533 comments This was a reread for me, as I had an ARC early on and I needed to refresh my memory to write my review for publication. Enjoyed it every bit as much second time around. And So It Began (Delaney #1) by Owen Mullen And So It Began by Owen Mullen. My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

PattyMacDotComma Wendell Berry offers a taste of the good ol' (and not so good ol') days in Jayber Crow, a favourite of many readers.

Thanks Greg. I'd never heard of it but saw a bunch of enthusiastic reviews so figured I'd better find it. :)

Chrissie Patty, Jayber Crow is my favorite by Wendell Berry. You picked the best one to start with.

I really did like it, Chrissie, although I have a few bones to pick about his ideal world. It would be lovely, if . . . I hope you don't mean it's all downhill from here, though. ??

Chrissie Patty,
with Jayber Crow I fluctuate from loving it to hating it at times, still I gave it four stars. While I do agree with his view of large scale agriculture, he hammers in the message too hard. My review explains why I still gave it four stars: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Well I got discouraged when I read his book Hannah Coulter and only thought it worth two stars. Here is my review of that : https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
This I found too inspirational and not gritty enough fo me.

Liked both of your reviews, Chrissie, and I agree about being beaten over the head sometimes. I was happier when he was "faithless"!

I have just finished Autumn by Ali Smith which I really enjoyed. I would definitely recommend it. Here is my review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I read it last year and found it a really understated novel, but in a good way! Im hoping it wins the Booker prize.

This weekend I read Richard III which I really enjoyed. It's my first History play by Shakespeare. I watched The Hollow Crown version last week, with Benedict Cumberbatch and thought it was excellent. I'd recommend both to anyone.

Pink, I'm looking forward to reading Winter when it comes out at the beginning of November. I think its one I could read again and see loads of different things

PattyMacDotComma Loved Aussie author Michael Robotham's debut novel, The Suspect, (#1 in The Joe O'Loughlin Series), which was written 13 years ago, so I've got some catching up to do!

Great to hear the book was so good. I will be soon reading the author's Einstein's Greatest Mistake: A Biography! I hope it proves to be as good as yours.

I hope so too, Chrissie. In "About the Author", it is stated that David Bodanis taught a survey of intellectual history at the University of Oxford for many years.

Chrissie Alice, now you have me all excited. Maybe I will pick Bodanis' book (Einstein's Greatest Mistake: A Biography) next. It is in my pile of the books to read this month. I hope it does not go over my head in the facts related to science.

message 12649: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments I finished The Swiss Family Robinson. Only 2 stars thanks to the foreword that explained a couple of important things so at least I didn't give up or hated it at the end, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Chrissie, I'm a "non-science" person but I found Bodanis' way of explaining science easy enough to grasp.
