Gill | 5719 comments I've just finished The Old Ways: A Journey on Foot. I think it's a book to savour, not read quickly (as I did!)

Here's my review:

dely | 5214 comments Yesterday I finished my last book for this year and also the book with which I complete my yearly challenge. This year it was really hard to complete my challenge because I was more busy respect to other years.

Well, the last book of this year has been The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Miguel Ruiz. I rated it only 2 stars because I'm not that into self-help books. Maybe someone can find them interesting and helpful but for me these authors make the solution of problems too easy and so they aren't that believable. I'm sure other readers find them helpful, but these books are not for me.

Gemma, on finishing the book, my heart broke for Agnes (view spoiler). Along with Grace from Alias Grace, she's a real life character who has haunted me since I read about their stories. Maybe you could try Alias Grace?

Karin dely wrote: "Yes, but it's also interesting to see and to know why opinions changed. Every age had its truth that then changed again."

I agree, although not so much about truth, since I think truth remains the same (a stance, I know), but people don't agree in this or what truth is. Facts change, interpretations change, and what most or many people call truth changes.

Lauri (otwlauri) | 137 comments I just finished The Winter Sea yesterday and I thought it was fabulous! So intriguing and imaginative, but yet with a lot of historical detail. Loved the setting of Scotland and ruined Slains Castle.

The Winter Sea (Slains, #1) by Susanna Kearsley

Patrick Last week I finished The Courtier and the Heretic: Leibniz, Spinoza & the Fate of God in the Modern World. A wonderful piece of philosophical history, written in an accessible and engaging style. Highly recommended.

message 10269: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma I decided to start 2017 by setting aside a crime novel and re-reading the classic A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, a master of the English language.

That was a 5star idea if there ever was one! It was better than I remembered - so deliciously descriptive.

My review for 5★ - the story, I mean, not the review :)

I am not reading your review Luffy as I have this on my bedside table to read when I finish HP and the Goblet of Fire. Hope you enjoyed it!

Sam | 68 comments Finished reviews for Everything Belongs to Us, which I really wanted to like, and felt had a stronger second half (minus ending) than the first half, so ultimately settled on 3 stars.

Everything Belongs to Us by Yoojin Grace Wuertz My review:

Also finished a mini review of Ragdoll, a fast paced and fresh crime thriller. I didn't want to dissect too much, but this is a great new title and hopefully the first in a strong new series! 4 stars.

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished up a couple of mysteries over the New Year holiday but haven't written any reviews for them. Both were police procedurals - The Dance of the Seagull (Inspector Montalbano) and The Hanging Garden (Inspector Rebus) - and both good. I think that the Rebus was better though quite gritty - I can't read these back-to-back the way I can with some mysteries!

Great review! And I agree that sometimes we feel the urge to read our "comfort" authors that never disappoint.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I've at last finished the classical Chinese play The Peony Pavilion: Mudan ting by the iconic Ming playwright Tang Xianzu. I read the play in Chinese (classical text) and thoroughly savored the lyrical metaphors and choreography of imagery - a 5-star read.

Gill, I was interested in this book when I first heard of it about a month ago or so, but that's exactly what I feared: that the personal stuff would be more than the country-specific stuff. Do you think I should still read it? I haven't bought it yet, just put it on my "wishlist someday" list.

dely | 5214 comments I have finished reading Francesco d'Assisi: La storia negata 4*

There isn't an English translation of this book but I recommend it to Italians that like to know about Saint Francis and why after his death all the papers about him disappeared and there was only one official biography that wasn't trustful. After a lot of years the original papers written by his confreres could be found so they started writing new and trustful biographies. Very interesting, above all the historical background and how things worked in the Francisan Order.

If you want to know about the countries, I don't think this is the book to read, Marina.
