We're doing about a chapter a day or so. She's just got past the point of the burned porridge on Jane's first day of school. For some reason, that's really stuck in her head.

World Book Club recently had a discussion on it with the author:

Bryan wrote: "Started Jane Eyre as a buddy read with my teenage daughter.."You may want to peruse Charlotte Brontë: A Fiery Heart by Claire Harman. She provides an informative backstory on the book and Charlotte’s life as a whole. Reading it helped me tie together the underlying theme in her works.

The 1st part, "Benji"'s, is very stream-of-consciousness confusing. Occurrences remind him of others in the past and he jumps around in time. The later 3/4 of the book is not so crazy.

I’m in the mood for something light and am starting Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson.

A few days ago I started The Godfather. I wasn't sure about it, but the librarian made me an offer I couldn't refuse :)

It's very amusing! I enjoyed the movie with Francis McDormand as Miss Pettigrew too.

Still working on The Godfather, but starting "Candide" today. Most of my Goodreads friends have already read it; most of them didn't love it though.
I'm going to start Written on the Body probably in the morning or before sleep tonight. It's also on the "Feminista" list of best books in the 20th century by women writers.
That will make 5 books I'm reading at once, but I'm almost finished with 2 of them and Candide is quite short. 4 of them are List books, so making a dent in the List.

Started listening to an audio edition of Carson McCuller's The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. I made it about half-way through--I thought it was excellent so far.
Just started two list books, the 1Q84 trilogy- Murakami and Doctor Zhivago- Boris PasternakTwo from my Christmas/winter reading list that I’ve been really looking forwards to.
Just picked up The Professor’s House by Willa Cather. I have enjoyed so many of her books like Death Comes for the Archbishop, My Antonia, and O Pioneers so I am really looking forward to this.
Started Dracula in October. I was really enjoying it, but now I'm halfway through and for some reason I'm struggling to finish.
Yesterday I started Journey to the End of the Night by Celine (France). This one will take a while, but I'm liking the style so far. My libraries didn't have it and since it's long I bought a used copy. I was just off work for a month due to an injury so did a lot of reading. I'm healing well and back to work.

Sorry to hear about your injury. I did that myself this summer and discovered some extra reading time. Glad to know you are healing well.

I'm reading through The Enchanted Wanderer: And Other Stories, and am about to start the title story, which is Leskov's only contribution to the list. I love his work – he is one of the greatest Russian short-story writers, but the previous collection that I read didn't include this story so it is new to me.

No, it's not on the Boxall list, nor are any other books by John Green. A complete list is here

It is kind of long- I think there's more tension and excitement in the 2nd half.

Just started the audiobook of The Shadow Lines by Amitav Ghosh (of India). It was added to the list in '08.
Evidently The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter is not on the list. This is the worst mistake I've seen yet on the list
Kafka on the Shore, by Haruki Murakami. A Christmas present from my brother, who knows me far too well :) Just wish it was the 3rd already, when hubby and kids go back to work/school and I'll actually get a chance to read more than a paragraph at a time!
I just started the New Year with Moby-Dick or, The Whale. So far I'm really enjoying it. I love the descriptions and there are bits of humor sprinkled throughout.

That surprised me, too.

Actually, I'm rather enjoying it--much more than Wuthering Heights anyway. I think the older I get, the more I enjoy the classic classics.
