Kayla Humphreys Neither. In fact, I couldn't stand either book for some reason, which has made other readers look at me with surprise and never listen to me again when I talk about books, thinking I don't know what I'm talking about. I didn't like either book because I don't think the way it was written appealed with my taste, but that doesn't mean I don't see how others could have enjoyed it.

Sarah Just finished Wuthering Heights this week, absolutely loved it but it is so different to Pride and Prejudice I don't think you can really compare them. Though I suppose the Cathy/Hareton part does have some parallels to Elizabeth Bennett/Mr Darcy. I liked the darker themes of Wuthering Heights but equally love the story of Pride and Prejudice. Couldn't call it!

Carolina Morales They're completely different, in gender, main themes and writing style. Now if you ask me to choose between Agnes Grey and P&P maybe I could consider it more properly.

Darn it! This is almost as bad as Wuthering Heights vs. Jane Eyre!
I refuse to pick. I love them both. Wuthering Heights is in a class by itself and shouldn't be compared with any other novel.

Allison I avoid comparing Austen to the Bronte sisters simply because the styles are so different. In general, I like Austen's novels better than any of the Bronte sister novels (though I've yet to read Anne Bronte's stuff, so I'll refrain from compairing to her things.).

However, for the purpose of the question, I'll say P&P hands down. I've read both numerous times. P&P always makes me happy and makes me feel good. Wuthering Heights usually gets thrown against a wall because Cathy is a spoiled brat and I hate Heathcliff. However, the only Bronte book I appreciate is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, so that could be my issue.

Joyce P&P definitely. I never really cared for Wuthering Heights because it is darker.

kellyjane I like P&P infinitely more than WH; but that is because P&P is the kind of story that I like reading, while WH definitely is not. Both stories were very well-written.

I loved the storyline of both books, but I'll go with P&P mostly because of Elizabeth, who is one of my all-time favorite characters.

zamra both are v good but the story of p and p is rather easy and clearly written..

Peter Whitaker I like both books but I think that there is a value in comparing them just because they are so different. Pride & Prejudice reflects a more refined society whereas Wuthering Heights reflects a more naturalistic social setting.

Both authors give an intriguing insight into the world as they knew it but whereas one follows a clear path towards a conclusion structured by the plot the other is far more radical and challenging to the reader.

So to conclude I like both books but for different reasons making a preference between them difficult because reading either would depend on what kind of book I wanted to read when choosing between them.

Hannah I like Pride and Prejudice much more. I think it's because the characters, outcomes and motivations of the characters are all much more likeable. So I felt joy for the characters when things worked out.
That's not to say I didn't enjoy WH, I just didn't relate to the characters. Both are fantastic books.

Konna Pride and Prejudice and that's out of the question.

Pauline Toohey Wuthering Heights is my comfort read. I revisit every few years. Exquisite.

M I like Wuthering Heights, but I LOVE Pride & Prejudice. The difference is Jane Austen's sense of humor, and by comparison WH seems so bleak and lacking in the full range of human emotions.

message 15: by Kate (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kate Diffley I am with Marika I liked Wuthering Heights enjoyed Pride and Prejudice much more

message 16: by Dana (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dana Bailey I used to be a big Wuthering Heights fan. But lately I like Pride & Prejudice better. There's too much hate in Wuthering Heights.

message 17: by Elif (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elif I choose P&P definitely. I couldn't stand the dark and suffocating atmosphere of W.H. while reading it.. Living in it?? no, thanks..

message 18: by Val (new) - rated it 5 stars

Val P&P wins by a long way for one simple reason. Heathcliff is a nasty bit of work while Mr Darcy is a darling!

chinami obviously P&P
P&P had more content quality than wuthering heights. plus P&P has polished language.

Gail Hurst Do you like the new books based on the original P&P? I rather liked the mystery called Death at Pemberly. Lydia still raising cane and Jane and Lizzie still close with children. There is a novel about Mary too, I forget the name of it. But at the beginning she is still a spinster and not very pretty, but the author develops her character and looks and prospects through the story. I liked it too.

Claudia the Night Owl Wuthering Heights was okay but nothing beats Pride and Prejudice.

LulaM Pride & Prejudice, definitely.

Val Gail wrote: "Do you like the new books based on the original P&P? I rather liked the mystery called Death at Pemberly. Lydia still raising cane and Jane and Lizzie still close with children. There is a novel..."

I thought Death Comes to Pemberly was incredibly slow and not at all worthy of a follow-up to P&P. I had never read a PD James before and wondered if she is simply going off, or does she always write like that?

I agree. Judging either of these books will be totally unfair;<

Hannah I looove Pride and Prejudice. I can just drink in Jane Austen's books. Lizzie is my favourite and I tried to read Wuthering Heights but I couldn't really understand it.

Lynsey Hmmmm well I'll admit, it's difficult to compare these books. They're both written by Englishwomen in the 19th century and...I feel like that's where the comparisons end. I like each book for very different reasons. "Pride and Prejudice" is light-hearted (at times even silly) and romantic, and most of the characters, if not likable as people, are harmless and entertaining. Elizabeth is one of my favorite female characters in literature, ever. "Wuthering Heights," on the other hand, is a dark story, most of the characters are not very easy to like, yet the plot is so compelling. No, they can't even be put into the same genre.

Joana Both very good and hardly comparable..this being said, I just finished Wuthering Heights today and even though it was a very interesting read, it was a bit too gloomy and dark. I'd have to say Pride and Prejudice, even though I loved them both!

message 28: by Sue (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sue Pride and Prejudice--without a doubt

Sarah Pride and Prejudice. Wuthering Heights was too annoying, in my opinion and I avoid rereading it, unless I'm absolutely bored out of my wits.

message 30: by B.T. (new) - rated it 5 stars

B.T. Clifford I'll take Pride and Prejudice over Wuthering Heights any day. It is like comparing apples and lemons though. Both have their place. I enjoy the variety of characters in Austen's book so much more, they're entertaining. I just wanted to punch someone when I read WH. Everyone in the book is a pain.

message 31: by Michael (last edited Jul 31, 2013 11:40PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Michael Pearce Pride and Prejudice. The characters are likable or at least entertaining. Ms. Austin's wit is delicious and shows a surprising depth of understanding of human nature for a woman of the author's relatively tender years. I read it over and over and always find something new to admire. Wuthering Heights is a masterpiece as well, but like many great works of art it is easier to admire than to live with.

Nicole D. They both tie for my favorite book.I can never decide which one I love more.

Sofia Although these two books are so diferent from each other, i must say i liked P&P more than WH
I can't judge people for not liking some books i like. I simply think that Wuthering Heights' story is much darker and much more complex than Pride and Prejudice's. Some people might like WH, but my choice is P&P

Karine The two books are very different, but I definitely liked Wuthering Heights better. The story was more interesting and intense.

Amanpreet P&P is definitely where my vote goes to. I have read WH as well but wasn't as impressive as P&P. P&P remains my favorite forever and nothing can ever replace it. Period.

Heather Neill Well considering that I HATE Wuthering Heights and LOVE Pride and Prejudice...this is a no brainer for me. I couldn't stand any of the characters in WH...thought they were immature, shallow, and self-obsessed. Ruined the book for me. But to each their own.

message 37: by Kate (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kate Diffley P&P

message 38: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Pride and Prejudice. I read both. While each is a classic in their own merit, I really hated Wuthering Heights. I couldn't stand the characters, all they did was whine. It was HORRIBLE to read. It felt like I was listening to Nails on a Chalkboard....

Molly Helm Pride and Prejudice. Loved it.

Susan Pride and Prejudice by a country mile. I was never captured by the wild romanticism of Wuthering Heights. I didn't like the way Cathy bailed on Heathcliff, I thought Heathcliff's revenge was kind of ridiculous, and I just didn't like the Lintons.
I love Elizabeth Bennett's spunk. I like the sweetness of Mr. Bingley (although he's kinda spineless) and Lady Catherine's line about "If I had studied music, I should have been a great proficient" was one of the best lines to capture a personality that I've ever read.

Annemarie Donahue This is a hard question. Both books are so good in their own way, and they are very dissimilar. I think I'd rather read P&P and study WH.

Hannah Susan, I completely agree about Lady Catherine's line - it's one of the most memorable lines in the book for me. Just brilliant.

Kendra Armstrong P&P wins-I've read it several times. I loved both books, but for totally different reasons. P&P was more engaging for me, and not as dark as WH, however, both are brilliant! On an emotional level, I connected with P&P's characters far better than I did WH's characters.

Lynsey Annemarie wrote: "This is a hard question. Both books are so good in their own way, and they are very dissimilar. I think I'd rather read P&P and study WH."

I like the way you put that.

message 45: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Both are great for many different reasons! WH is so dark and dramatic but P & P is the best b/c of Elizabeth and all the different characters.

Susan I prefer Jane Eyre (or Jane Eyre-head, if I'm flippant) over Wuthering Heights. Different Bronte, I know. Mr. Rochester is a would-be bigamist, but I still like him better than Heathcliff. I see Heathcliff more driven by rage and frustration at not being able to have Cathy than he is by love for her. Granted, thwarted love is more romantic, but Heathcliff takes his revenges to an off-putting level.
And...more importantly, I'll take Colin Firth over Laurence Olivier any day (and yes, I know Olivier played Darcy in the 1940 film version. Don't get me started on the anachronisms in there).

Lynsey Susan wrote: "I prefer Jane Eyre (or Jane Eyre-head, if I'm flippant) over Wuthering Heights. Different Bronte, I know. Mr. Rochester is a would-be bigamist, but I still like him better than Heathcliff. I see He..."

Mr. Rochester is a much easier character to sympathize with. Yeah, he pulled some dick moves, but in the end he was redeemed, I thought. Heathcliff could have had a chance at redemption; he had a tough time as a child, to be sure, but he took that and became a horrible man. In contrast, Hareton is not doomed to his fate, because he and young Catherine do seek to break that cycle of misery.

message 48: by e (new) - rated it 5 stars

e I prefer Pride and Prejudice. Maybe because I read Wuthering Heights for school.

Elaine I've read Pride and Prejudice several times because I love it so much. I read Wuthering Heights only once and vowed never to read it again.

Kendra Armstrong I had to read Wuthering Heights in 10th grade and didn't appreciate it then, but I sure do now! Now they are reading the Hunger Games in English Lit. My son & his girlfriend had never even heard of WH or P&P. It's a shame. I just registered for a Goodreads Giveaway for Born of Persuasion, described by the author as Wuthering Heights meets Jane Austen! Cannot wait for the release! http://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_...
