Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Laura & Fi, what happens if you listen to an audio for a book, how many pages would you could that ladies?

message 202: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Fiona wrote: "Laura & Fi, what happens if you listen to an audio for a book, how many pages would you could that ladies?"

I think that they are going with the most popular book editions page count for every book read. So whatever edition comes up first in a search is the one that's used for the page-read count, even the the edition read was different. I think that's fair though. :)

message 203: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Thanks Becky. Could I look at the book I have for it and go by what pages that had, as I just felt like listening to the audio instead of reading the book?

message 204: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Fiona wrote: "Thanks Becky. Could I look at the book I have for it and go by what pages that had, as I just felt like listening to the audio instead of reading the book?"

I don't think so. I think they are counting the most popular editions pages regardless of the edition of the book you actually read, and not just for audio and ebooks. It makes it fair across the board, because the edition I read could have 500 pages, but the edition someone else reads could only have 430 or something.

message 205: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) So you would have to look up the page count for the book in GR database, and whichever edition comes up first is the one you'd go by.

message 206: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Becky, do you know if Goodnight Mister Tom is suitable for 5.4 hon?

message 207: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Fiona wrote: "Becky, do you know if Goodnight Mister Tom is suitable for 5.4 hon?"

From reading the description, I would say so. The mother/son relationship seems to be a major factor in the story, so I'd think it would count toward 5.4.

Thanks for mentioning that one too, it looks really good! :)

I'm off to bed now... G'night all!

message 208: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Nite Becky. Thanks as well xx

message 209: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty I've just added Goodnight Mister Tom to my TBR list. I've seen the film, but never read the book.

message 210: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) Becky Said: I didn't list all of the books by the authors I found, or all of the authors, but this is a pretty good list to start with, right? :)

Becky you are Awesome!!! thanks for the suggestions..I am going to change my 30.3 to Beauty. :~)

Samantha McNulty Fiona wrote: "Goodnight Mr Tom is a brilliant book Samantha. The film was good too, quite true to the book though it missed a lot out but nothing important. "

I'm glad it didn't miss out anything important. I may see if my local library has a copy of the book.

message 212: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) Woohoo I got my list all done...Thanks to Laura for the help with the 10.1 task and Becky for the 30.3 and 20.5. You ladies are awesome!!!

Now to get all that reading done. :~)

message 217: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow. I need to work on picking my books.

message 218: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments I can't choose all my books at once because I tend to change my mind too much, so I'm going to pick mine one section at a time. Here's my choices for the 30 point tasks:

30.1 :

What I Saw And How I Lied(National Book Award--US) and Tamar A Novel of Espionage, Passion, and Betrayal (Carnegie Medal--UK).

30.2: The Graveyard Book(yay!).

30.3: Fairest

Thank you so much, Josie, for the list of retold fairy tales. I was worried about finding one for that category!

message 219: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Alisha wrote: "Okay, I have a question. In those tasks that you are supposed to write your opinion of the book (like the award task and the watch the movie/read the book task), do you write your opinion in here ..."

We'd like to keep the other thread strictly for points and the leader board to minimize confusion, Alisha, so you would list the task number, such as 20.1, and your opinion here.

message 220: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Jamie wrote: "Just to confirm, Pride and Prejudice is acceptable as a YA book for the challenge?

Also, I was wondering how many books you all are planning to incorporate into the challenge that are re-reads? I..."

P&P is acceptable for the challenge and re-reads are acceptable, as stated in the Ground Rules.

However - as stated previously, you can only re-read any one book for one task. You can not re-read it more than once during May - July and use it for 2 different tasks.

message 221: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) Thanks for putting together this awesome challenge. I've never done one before but this seems perfect for me right now. I even started Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George last night, which works for a retold fairy tale.

message 222: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Lisa wrote: "Thank you Becky for that link...so for task 30.3 can I read Wicked?"

Yes, we'll consider the Wizard of Oz a fairy tale for the purposes of this task.

message 223: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Lisa - Just looking quickly at your list, task 25.2 calls for two books, and I only see one in your list. I'm answering these questions in order, so if you've addressed this later on and I haven't seen it yet, disregard.

Becky - Thanks for posting the list of fairytale retellings. Also a note - we're going to stretch and call Wizard of Oz a fairytale in the spirit of trying to allow everyone lots of flexibility and freedom in this challenge.

message 224: by Jamie (new)

Thanks, Laura. I hadn't planned on reading the same book for more than one task, but it doesn't feel quite right to have 8 books that I'll be re-reading, you know? I'm still contemplating.

It's a great list, Becky, thanks again for posting that.

message 226: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Fiona wrote: "Laura & Fi, what happens if you listen to an audio for a book, how many pages would you could that ladies?"

Hi Titch - as someone suggested early on, pull up the title on Goodreads, and for the first actual "book" listing of that title that comes up, use the number of pages shown there as your number of pages read for that book.

1. The Golden Compass and Stardust
2. Anne of Green Gables
3. Beastly (Beauty and the Beast Retelling)

25 Point Tasks
1. What Happened to Cass McBride? (Mystery); Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac (Contemporary); School's Out - Forever (Action/Adventure)
2. TBD
3. Secret Keeper
4. Abarat, Book 1 Abarat; Abarat Days of Magic, Nights of War

20 Point Tasks

5. The Sweet Far Thing

10 Point Tasks

2. Rebel Angels (5 star book from (G)Emma's Bookshelf)
3. The Book Thief
4. How I Live Now

5 Point Tasks
1. Graceling
2. To Kill a Mockingbird
3. Eragon (recommended by 15 year old cousin
4. Donorboy A Novel

I read The Princess Diaries last night for 20.1 and watched the movie afterward. And I have to say that the whole "the books are always better than the movie" doesn't really apply to this (in my opinion, of course). While I thought that the book was cute and funny, I just thought the movie was so much better. Oddly enough, I felt that the characters were more fleshed out in the movie than in the book. The supporting characters, that is. Mia was fleshed out plenty in the novel (since it was in a diary format), but characters like Joseph (Lars in the book) and Clarisse (Grandmere in the book) were just better on screen. Even a minor character (both in the movie and the book) like Principal Gupta was done better in the movie. Two minute scene-stealers like that just translate better to film then to a book (in most cases).

So, I definitely preferred the movie to the book. Don't get me wrong, I thought the book was also great and funny (there's this one part where Mia is describing Grandmere's makeup in the book that had me laughing for at least five straight minutes) and I'm looking forward to picking up the rest of the books. It's just that the movie is near and dear to my heart since it was one of my favorite movies as a preteen and re-watching it again didn't make it lose any of the love I had for it when I originally watched it.

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments I knew that someone else had posted a list of retold fairy tale books but I couldn't find it (I didn't have my contacts in yet so I didn't want to start scrolling all over the place). Anyway, thanks for putting that one up too, Becky.

message 229: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) Do not worry, Fiona. I did, it's just that Laura said to write your opinions in here. :)

And you should definitely read The Princess Diaries (even though, you have a thing against pink and fluffy. Don't worry I sort of do, too). It was a cute story.

Laura (apenandzen) Jennifer wrote: "I'm struggling on the find a book that was published the year you were born. so if anyone has any ideas for 1985, let me know...thanks a bunch "

If you check out the Awards thread, Jennifer, many of the award-winning books are listed by year. NOTE though, that often a book that won in the year 1985 was actually published in 1984, so check those to make sure - if you decide to take one from there.

message 233: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments My other suggestion is to view your shelves in list format and you can organize it by publication date. I also looked at other members lists to find mine and organized it the same way to find the correct year.

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) Laura Said: Lisa - Just looking quickly at your list, task 25.2 calls for two books, and I only see one in your list.

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments What are the qualifications for a Classical YA/Juvennile book? Are you going by publication year, or are there other qualifications to make it Classical? Just checking. Thanks!

message 236: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Never really thought about it - I have an undefined image in my head of what a 'classic' is.

You wanna field this one Fiona?

message 237: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments So, as long as it was published before 1950, I'm ok? I have a few in mind, and wasn't sure where they would fit, but that works! Thanks!!

Laura (apenandzen) For books by a new author - I keep copying this message down from prior pages, hope it's helpful.

http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/yalsa/...

Fiona's posted a link to the Morris Award in the Awards section, but there it is. This award is specifically for new YA authors, and it was first awarded in 2009. There are several to choose from, including the winner and the finalists.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Laura, If I want to use Maus 1 & 2 instead for task 30.3 (since it says the book can be a fairytale retelling or a book based on a real event) would that be ok?

Also, what happens if there is no page number listed for a book on GR?

message 246: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Sounds fine, Becky.

If there is no GR page number, then I would say go to http://www.amazon.com and whatever the first listing for the book is there - use that number of pages.

Sound good?
