Evans Light (evanslight) A big thunderstorm broke just as I was passing the used bookstore on my way home this afternoon. It wouldn't be safe for me to drive in that mess, right? So I did the only thing possible: rode the storm out in the store. Picked up these three cheap. Junk or gems?

I've heard the Keene book is good, but haven't ever heard of the other two. Hope they're good.

message 203: by Evans (new)

Evans Light (evanslight) The Children's Hour is set in West Virginia, so I couldn't resist. Reviews look pretty solid, too.

Sounds like a great excuse to me Evans! LOL

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments That was my thought, Cindy. Also, it wasn't what he's up to now, but what he did earlier. Maybe we should make a thread named "what I did earlier today." Just a thought. ;)

message 207: by [deleted user] (new)

HaHa!

11:09 p.m. and I'm going CRAZY. Not really, but it sounds good anyway.

message 208: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments I was born crazy. I see from your post we occupy the same time zone, Cindy.

message 209: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep. Good ole E.S.T.

message 210: by [deleted user] (new)

And that's a wrap folks! Good day!

message 211: by [deleted user] (new)

4:00 p.m. and I just got home from work. Supposed to pick up a friend around 7, but if she doesn't call, I'm staying home and getting some much needed rest. Would like to read for a while but every time I make an attempt at it, something happens. Maybe I will plan to NOT read. Hmmm, then we can see what happens. Hope everyone is having a great day so far. I'm exhausted. Working in a 110 degree warehouse all day is draining. New grandbaby is doing well and went home today.

message 212: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (crackedx_spine) You know you're bored when you're coloring in your three year old's coloring book. I can't escape Disney Junior.

I really wish I was a reader who could read anywhere, but no... I need complete silence.

message 213: by [deleted user] (new)

Brittany, I am getting a little better with the reading in silence thing, but I get distracted by other things really easy. Can't read more than maybe 10 minutes without getting distracted by something.

message 214: by [deleted user] (new)

Goodnight folks! Until tomorrow ...

message 215: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Goodnight Cindy:) I'm currently sneaking in a short by Barker, The Midnight Meat Train. My 3 yr old fell asleep on the couch and I gotta do dishes...oh well.

message 216: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (crackedx_spine) Cindy, same here. I need to be "set" in my right mind before I can start to read. I get distracted so easily & I re-read sentences over. I tried reading in the doctors office once... even with everyone quiet, I just couldn't.

James - Like, I can read an entire book with commotion going on around me but I don't remember anything. It's a shame.

message 217: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (crackedx_spine) Addy, please get my mind out the gutter and tell me that's about something nonsexual, lol.

message 218: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Um,lol, yes, its nonsexual. Clive Barker is more horror. Its about a serial killer on the subway. But that makes sense. I totally understand where ur coming from:)

Joining on ur convo, I can read with so much noise its insane, but I've always been that way. The tv can be on full blast, music playing in the back ground and somehow I just zone it out. I don't mind silence though, its just rare with 2 little ones running around.

message 219: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (crackedx_spine) James - Yay! for having things in common. I get kind of jealous of people who can read when and wherever. I read lying in bed when it's exceptionally quiet and sometimes it takes me awhile to settle my brain. If I have a lot of my mind, it'll take me awhile to get into my rhythm, but it's relaxing once I find that rhythm. I eventually escape into another world, :)

Addy - My son is going on three in October, and I'm a single momma to boot, so he's your typical toddler but also a little on the high demand side. He has sensory issues and he's in high need of (i.e. his body literally craves) sensory input; very active and a lot of rough play is a constant here. From 6am to about 9pm - with a nap mid day - it's non stop loud and active around this house. So reading while he's doing his thing is next to impossible, lol.

Brittany wrote: "Addy, please get my mind out the gutter and tell me that's about something nonsexual, lol."

OMG! I just went back and re-read, yes I said re-read, Addy's post. That is pretty funny Brittany. See guys, I have to re-read a lot of stuff too. Probably explains why I am so slow.

message 221: by [deleted user] (new)

4:10 p.m. and I'm off and running once again. Taking a shower, cooking dinner, reading for a very short time, and then I'm off to pick a friend up. Hope everyone is having a fantastic day!

message 222: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Getting ready for a night out. Gonna watch The Conjuring tonight:) Yay!

message 223: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Seaberg (cricketseaberg) | 241 comments Hey, I'm going to The Conjuring as well! With the woman who cleans our offices and her daughter, because no one that I run around with likes scary movies! (Fools!) And I live in an old home, where a friend of ours swears we have a ghost in the basement. We'll see how I do once I get back home later! LOL!

message 224: by Evans (new)

Evans Light (evanslight) Probably heading out to see The Conjuring as well! I loved INSIDIOUS (same director) and this looks like it may be even better.

message 225: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Yeah. No one I run with likes scary movie either so I'm seeing this one alone. Gonna see if I can make it home without getting creeped out!

Evan, I loved Insidious as well. Can't wait for the sequel!

You guys better come back and let me know how you liked the movie tonight. I'm glad a few if you are going to see it too;)

message 226: by Evans (new)

Evans Light (evanslight) Just got back from THE CONJURING. I really enjoyed it, r thought the acting and sets were super solid, even if not the most original film ever. Kind of like a James Wan greatest hits. Love the classic vibe.
What did you think?

message 227: by Jason (new)

Jason Parent | 69 comments Was supposed to see it tonight, but plans fell through. Looking forward to it.

message 228: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments I haven't seen it. Getting ready to watch the Evil Dead remake. I have been looking forward to this one for some time.

message 229: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments I thought it was great. I was very creeped out by the end. I wasn't expecting what happened. I loved how it took place in the 70s and how it was a true story. Very classic. I haven't seen anything like this in a long time.

message 230: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments I struggled to remain conscious through the mind numbing 90 minutes of the Evil Dead remake... or whatever you want to call it. I thought it was trite after the first half-hour, but I persisted and was not rewarded for my tenacity. I like the original much better.

message 231: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Seaberg (cricketseaberg) | 241 comments I enjoyed it, and got really tired of the 2 teenage girls in the back row whose boyfriends had apparently coerced them into attending - they screamed constantly throughout the show. (view spoiler)

message 232: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments I'm about to take my daughter to Chamblin Book Mine. We are going to have fun getting lost in the labyrinthine shelves of imagination. Looking forward to it!

message 233: by Anthea (new)

Anthea | 19 comments LOL I had to look this up Adam! I didn't know if you were visiting a bookstore or an actual mine. Sounds like fun!

message 234: by Evans (new)

Evans Light (evanslight) Chamblin Book Mine - looked that up and saw 55,000 square feet of used books. Wow! Have fun.

message 235: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments Ha! I KNEW I could intrigue you guys. We love Chamblin.

message 236: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) Just finished A Walk To Remember by Nicholas Sparks, and is now thinking what a waste of trees to make a book out of his writing. Well, 170 pages is hardly a book, is it.

message 237: by Evans (new)

Evans Light (evanslight) Sorry the EVIL DEAD wasn't enjoyable for you. I liked it, even though I couldn't think of it as even in the same class as the original series. I did respect it for managing to create a genuine sense of excruciating palpable pain and mixing up the EVIL DEAD formula to the extent that you didn't know what was going to happen. The last half was beyond gruesome. What was missing, IMO, was the fun.

message 238: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments I couldn't agree more. They mixed it up well. I liked some of the twists on the original, but I couldn't wait to finish it.

message 239: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Lina, sorry you didn't like Nicholas Sparks. I adore his stories.

Lina (booksnotlovers) Addy wrote: "Lina, sorry you didn't like Nicholas Sparks. I adore his stories."

I liked the Lucky One and that other super-popular one I never remember what is called. But this one just ... nah. and it was so bloody short? 170 pages is not worth the money for a book.

message 241: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC I think I'm about to download the audiobook for the third book in Robert McCammon's Matthew Corbett series from audible. This is definitely his best stuff as far as I'm concerned.

GeneralTHC Adam wrote: "I haven't seen it. Getting ready to watch the Evil Dead remake. I have been looking forward to this one for some time."

I loved the first EVIL DEAD. I don't know why they have to remake every single thing these days.

I read a Nicholas Sparks book recently and thought it was pretty good myself. I'd definitely read more of his stuff.

GeneralTHC Lina wrote: "170 pages is not worth the money for a book. "

I guess it would depend on the book.

That sounds like an awesome bookstore! Reminds me of The Cemetery of Lost Books, from Shadow of the Wind.

message 246: by Joy (new)

Joy | 1 comments I enjoyed The Conjuring. True, the exorcism scene at the end was a little overdone, but authentically scary movies are SO rare, I'll take what I can get. I actually got goose bumps twice during the movie. That's a first for me.
Brenda, I'll go with you next time so you won't have to recruit the cleaning lady. :)

Rephrasing: 170 pages of this book is not worth the steep price of books in Norway.

And as I said, I've enjoyed Sparks in the past.

How much did that book cost in Norway anyway?

message 249: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC OMG a book is like 50 US dollars in Norway? That can't be right!

Is the price in Kroner? Like this Jo Nesbo is 349 kroner? Is that right? If so, that is outrageous.
