Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Ok here's my latest attempt at our August challenge:

Vicky & I have a spreadsheet started for keeping track of books so don't get worried if it looks like we aren't updating.

Pewter Blues Not Quite An Octagon Challenge

Mods approved: minimum of 1 for categories 2-8 but no need to set a limit on them. Members do not have to read a book for each category, as long as the team adds at least 1 book for each category.

1: Spell-Out-GO PEWTER BLUE (12)(major character &/or author names-first or last, 1st word in series or title-can drop words like of, the, a etc..)
2: Beach Reads: books we'd take to read on the beach.
3: Crazy EightsRead books with 8 letters in the title. Read books that have 8 words in the title. You may include the series name, or not, and you may ignore the indefinite and definite articles (a, an, and, the).8th book in a series. Or are written by an author with 8 letters in their first, last, or combined names - and initials. Or you may read books, that total 8 words with the title, series name, and author combined. (Example: Ghost Moon, Bone Island Trilogy, by Heather Graham-the "by" is used in this example to hit 8.) Or if the title has the word “eight” in the title. Or read a book that was originally published in August.
4: Green covers for Peridot birth stone.
**5: Sunworship Books with sun or fire on cover or in title, red or orange cover.
6: Summer Fling: books under 300 pages
7: Girl Power books by female authors in honor of women in the US getting the vote on 8/18/1920.
**8: Water, Water Everywhere: books set near water, water in title, water on cover etc..,

**Names and word variations allowed for #5 & #8. Name must be author or a major character. First or last name.
Need to hit 75

I reused another thread that wasn't getting used much for the finished books:

So use this thread, if you want, for keeping track for yourself and post when you finish a book here: August_Finished_books

Holly So do we post our finished books for August in this thread?

message 17: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) This is just a place to plan out books you have that fit, finished books will go here.

message 18: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Looking this over and leaving a reminder of what I want to read reminded me that my reading count is going to suffer some starting mid-Sept, so just beware. :) I'll try to do extra in Aug to make up for it. After Sept 17th, for a little while, my reading time will be limited to when my husband is at work. We'll be playing our new GTAV non-stop when he's here. :) Bye Bye night time reading! hehe! :D

Riya I love Divergent Sarah!!! It's one of my favorite books :)

message 22: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Do we need to read one book for each number or do we just fill in the books we read where they are appropriate. Do we need to post them now in advance and then read them.

Isn't it a bit confusing to have this folder for planning and then one to post our titles. Also, why have people reserved messages here? Am I making this more difficult than it is meant to be?

message 23: by Vicky (last edited Jul 10, 2013 09:24AM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) This is a team challenge, so we're going to look at all the books people read during August and place them into the categories to complete it, as a team.

We have the main Tower Teams challenge - where each team is aiming to reach 1350 first. To make this more exciting, the mods have planned monthly(ish) challenges that can earn us bonus points to help get us there faster. For August the mods put it to the teams to customize their monthly challenge.

You do not have to plan in advance, this is just a place for those who wish to plan to do so. A place to jot down the books you plan to read that could fit for a task.

The reason we have two threads is to make it easy for Mary and I to find finished books. This thread will likely become a basic discussion about the challenge (questions about if a book fits, etc) and the finished books thread will be strictly for posting books as you finish them. This way we don't have to sift through other discussions to find the information we need.

message 24: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Thanks Vicky. So without planning I can just post the books I finished in August and they will count for the team.

message 25: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 135 comments They don't get added to the group challenge until you post it as finished in that thread and we will probably rearrange books to fit categories such as spelling go pewter blue - we will only need one book per letter.

This thread is just for you if you want to organize and make a list for yourself.

message 26: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Nancy ~ this thread is to make it easier on us. It's not anything that you HAVE to use. Some people do plan their books ahead. It is not necessary to do so. I typically do not, but I have a few books coming out in Aug that I know I will read, plus a few others that I CAN read to specifically go with some categories.

No, you don't need to read one for each. You just fill in what categories with what you have read. This thread is used to keep our books in line as well as talk about them. The other thread is ONLY for finished books. We will put just the finished books there so that the mods can keep track of what is Aug Challenge based as opposed to what everyone is reading that isn't challenge based. We get bonuses for challenge read books and such and it's easier for them to keep track of the books separately without all the chit chat that will happen with this thread.

message 27: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) To get the August bonus points we have to read 75 books, together as a group, and each category has to have at least 1 book read. But not by each member. If I read a book for #8 Water, Water Everywhere and no one else does that's fine. The only one we have to limit is the spell out one because they're easy to finish and all the teams have been told to limit the spell outs.

Really the whole thing is just for fun and you do what you want for it. No pressure. Some players might read 20 books for the challenge others might only get a couple in and some might finish 0 for it.

message 28: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I always created a list ahead and then I very rarely stick to it. In fact I think I've already read a couple on the list I put up as possibles for August. I figured I'd update it again at the end of July with whatever I plan on reading soon.

I don't know why I ever bother to list ahead for any challenges. I never stick with it. I have several that I need to go back and update because I read different books then what I originally put down.

message 29: by Mary X (last edited Jul 10, 2013 10:06AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I just asked the mods if, like with the 7% challenge, we can use books from players not actively participating in the August Challenge. We have 3 or 4 people who rarely, if ever, post in the threads. But they do read and shelve books for us so hopefully we can work those into our 75.

If not then we need to average 9.5 books per player based on the # of people who have posted in this thread. (not saying that everyone would need to read at least 9 books, just saying that's what we need to average, don't worry if that's too high for you). We would only need to average 5.3 books per player if we can use the less chatty people.

message 30: by Karsyn (new)

No worries either way Mary. We seem to be pretty read-y even with just the active ones. I'll definitely be able to read at least 15 books. I don't want to promise more than that, just in case, but the last two months I've read over 20 and I'm already at 9 for this month. :) We'll do it. Maybe we'll even do it twice like the 7%. Hehe!! :D

message 31: by Vicky (last edited Jul 10, 2013 10:19AM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) We read approximately 120 books in May, 150 in June, and we're on track for another 150 this month. I think we can do it, no problem!

message 32: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) But that included the non-chatty members. I think we will be all right either way but I am a worrier by nature.

I'm going to try for 15 personally. I've been lagging behind and I'm going to try and get a bunch of short cozies in for August.

message 33: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) We'll definitely be fine Mary. I'm not a worrier at all. All will be good. We read, a LOT. :D

message 35: by Mary X (last edited Jul 19, 2013 05:48AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I am very pleased with our challenge. I think it's just challenging enough that it isn't too super easy but not so restrictive that it will be too hard to get to 75. There's a couple put up that seem too easy to me and/or look too restrictive to get 75 in but we only have to worry about ours so who cares.

I have not been notified of the need to change anything on ours at this point. Was kidn of worried that we'd have to make the beach reads & water one more specific. But I've offered it up a couple of times and no comment was made on them, so I think we're good.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I updated our challenge to tweak it a little. Nothing much just noted that word variations and names could be used for the sun & water themed categories. Ex: a book with a character or author with a first or last name of River(s), Lake, Sunny etc..,

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments I'll be planning my August reads soon! One more week!

message 42: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 135 comments Question - in spell out category 1 can we also use letter from the first letter of a first or last name of a main character?

...and can eight words count for combined title with author name as well.

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Either first or last names of a main character may be used.

The eight word title/author combo was allowed in the 7% Challenge; up to your Captains for the August challenge.

message 44: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I was going to use the same rules for the eight theme was the 7%. I'll put that up there.

message 46: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) 1 more day left before the challenge starts. Remember books just have to be finished in August. So if you have something started already and you don't finish until August, it still counts.

Also, like in the 7% challenge, I retain the right to move books around if needed. This will only come into play if there's a category that no one has filled yet and I see a book that fits as we need at least 1 in each category. 2nd: the spell out is limited to 12 letters so once that's filled, books may be moved to other categories.

message 47: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) And we're off for this. Please post your finished books in the finished books thread even if you think it doesn't fit anywhere. I can probably find a home for it in the challenge.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Just realized that I never posted a clarification the spell out. Since the mods didn't make any restrictions on what qualifies, we can use the 1st or last name of the author or major charactor or first work of series or title. Words like the, of, a etc., can be dropped.

Please Note:

In the Spell-It-Out section, for each letter read books with titles (only the first or starting word will count), series names, authors (both first or last names), character (first or last name), that begin with letters that correspond to letter of the phrase or term you choose. You may ignore the indefinite and definite articles (a, an, the, etc.)

Yes, we will allow main character (MC) names!

MC Definition: Only major characters will be allowed, or one that plays an important part. So for instance in Dead Until Dark, you may use Sookie, Bill, Sam, Eric, or Pam; but, not Arleen or the other vamps that appear only for a few scenes.

Baroness Blue | 23 comments Hey, Mary -- could I possibly see your spreadsheet for this challenge? I am trying to figure out how I want to approach tracking this one and wondered if I could glean some ideas from you. Thanks!
