Alan (alanmccluskey) Just finished The Accidental Sorcerer and written a short review of it. Loved her characters!

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) In honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day I am reading Celia Rees's Pirates!- ARGH!

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments I spent the afternoon reading picture books. Now off to read Kathleen Krull's Lives of the Pirates: Swashbucklers, Scoundrels A great non-fiction on pirates.

I debated that one this month, but went with Vampirates instead. I already have a "P" book read, lol...

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) I have Vampirates at school, but this one was at home, so it won :)

How was Vampirates?

That's the good thing about LHA, even your non-favorites of hers are good :)

Alan (alanmccluskey) Just started Tracking the Tempest. After Karen Miller and Kate Forsyth, reading Nicole Peeler is like tasting a thin consommé after having delighted in a thick, delicious broth. I suppose things will get better when the story kicks in.

It's middle school level, so pretty tame overall. Good though, I was entertained enough to pick up the next book. It received some criticism because it's supposed to be set in the future, but seems more like the past... I just put aside the time-set and enjoyed it for what it is.

message 2311: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm ready to go home and reserve some more but right now I'm reading Goddess of the Sea by P.C. Cast.

message 2312: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 89 comments Just started an oldie Anne of Windy Poplars, I don't know why I never finished this series in my youth. I read the first two and then never made it through the third. Now I'm reading them sporadically and they really are sweet books.

Kellyflower | 136 comments I'm concentrating on finishing up Gone by Michael Grant & Crashed by Robin Wasserman.

The skinned series reminds me a little of Cylons from BSG.

I love Buffy and Angel but Bones didn't do it for me. The actress who played Tempe seemed a little flat. But then I wasn't that impressed when I read one of the books.

message 2315: by Esther (last edited Sep 25, 2010 01:12AM) (new)

Esther (eshchory) I've just finished The Power of Two which is more middle grade than YA.
Now I reading Once Bitten which could be YA so far except for the blood and gore though I get the feeling it might turn X-rated.

I LOVED the Anne of Green Gables series when I was young. That and The Little House on the Prairie. Very sweet.

message 2317: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) I'm working on 3 books at once right now. I used to read 2 and 3 books at a time when I was in high school, but I get more confused in my old age, haha...

But I am listening to Glimmerglass as an audiobook in the car, reading Rot & Ruin on my iPhone/iPad, and reading a good old fashioned paperback copy of Annie on My Mind. They're all different enough that I am able to keep them straight.

I'm enjoying Glimmerglass more than I expected to, because I think I am not an audiobook kinda girl. It seems like the last two I listened to I really didn't enjoy. I find the narrator's voice to be irritating many times. (Which is funny, because I have an awful Minnie Mouse voice myself!)

But of the three, I am liking Rot & Ruin best. I'm in a zombie phase now... Having moved on from vampires and werewolves temporarily :)

message 2318: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm reading Goddess of the Sea (Goddess Summoning, #1) by P.C. Cast by PC Cast, who wrote the House of Night series. This one is the start of a series and is just "eh." Mermaid romance.

message 2319: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I started reading Don't You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey. I should be finished with it by now. The book is only 124 pages. What can I say, I'm just not into this book. Though the theme is an important one. A teen who is having serious trouble at home. I think that if I were 15 I would have finished reading it in an hour and could have related.

message 2320: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) I'm still working on my Glimmerglass audiobook, and am physically reading Everwild by Neal Shusterman. I've had this book off my shelf for weeks now, but just couldn't seem to pick it up. I started it last night, and of course I like it already... My reading habits are so odd!

message 2321: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanmccluskey) I find it interesting to see how the writer bridges between books and helps remind the reader of what went before and enables him or her to step back into the story. I haven't read this particular book so I don't know how Megan Whalen Turner does it.

message 2322: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanmccluskey) Just began reading Ballad: A Gathering of Faerie

message 2323: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm reading The Sword Thief which is book three in the 39 clues series. Each book is written by a different author. This author Peter Lerangis (sp?) is pretty good. I've made it through this one quicker than the second. Good news it's only about 150 pages.

message 2324: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 89 comments Goodness Little House on the Prairie is another one of those series I started and never completed. I'm going to have to add them to my list. I think I read Little House in the Big Woods a few times but never went any further despite my sister having all of them!

Let me know what you think of The Visibles, I am looking forward to it.

message 2327: by Roshini (new)

Roshini Honestly, right now I wish someone would give me the cliffnotes version. It keeps jumping time, place and perspective, so I am all confused. Pity, because the basic plot is interesting. Haven't given up on it yet though.

I hate it when a book is tough to get into.

message 2332: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanmccluskey) In my own books I try to integrate the reminders in the action itself, but then I am not dealing with epic proportions. You are right, it's a tricky decision for the writer and wrongly handled it can put the reader off. In the case of epic stories, a glossary of characters or places can be useful.

message 2333: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm reading Betrayedby P.C. Cast. I'm loving the House of Night series.

message 2334: by Roshini (new)

Roshini Arya...no I haven't read Princess and the Hound. I didn't know this was book 2 when I bought it. I've been told that the first one is better. Have you read it?

Angela...I so agree. The basic plot sounds so interesting, but I'm getting confused with the jumping storylines. Maybe it's just me...

message 2335: by Arya (new)

Arya (izlandzadi) | 686 comments I liked both of them. The first one was different, but I wouldn't say it was better, they were both great! I enjoyed the unique storyline!

Thanks so much Arya! Northlander sounds really good, have you read the sequel as well? Why is it so hard to find books that are not part of a series?:-)

Hi Jess. I'm surprised you resisted the temptation to go on to the second book of His Dark Materials. Maybe that is one of the disadvantages of reading for classwork: you can't follow your own inclinations... at least not straight away.

I cheated and saw the movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I liked it, so did my sister. But it's not for everyone. I also heard it takes a little while to get used to the names and things in the book.
I'm looking forward to seeing The Girl Who Played With Fire at the end of October.

Well happy reading! Some people find the last book heavier reading as Pullman gets into more philosophical considerations albeit within the story. I think I read the last book three or four times and then read it backwards, chapter by chapter to try to extricate myself from the story :-)

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Alan I was thoroughly confused by book 3. Loved the first and second but felt lost with the third one. Amazed that you read it so many times.

I've got a hard head! And maybe a passing interest for philosophical questions about good and evil and the role of institutions :-) But mostly I was fascinated by the growing relationship between the two main characters. Without giving away (too much of) the story, the end struck such a familiar chord for me with its intense yearning for a love so strong that it cannot be.
