What Are You Reading Now?
I spent the afternoon reading picture books. Now off to read Kathleen Krull's Lives of the Pirates: Swashbucklers, Scoundrels A great non-fiction on pirates.

Kellee wrote: "In honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day I am reading Celia Rees's Pirates!- ARGH!"I debated that one this month, but went with Vampirates instead. I already have a "P" book read, lol...

Just started Tracking the Tempest. After Karen Miller and Kate Forsyth, reading Nicole Peeler is like tasting a thin consommé after having delighted in a thick, delicious broth. I suppose things will get better when the story kicks in.
Kellee wrote: "I have Vampirates at school, but this one was at home, so it won :) How was Vampirates?"
It's middle school level, so pretty tame overall. Good though, I was entertained enough to pick up the next book. It received some criticism because it's supposed to be set in the future, but seems more like the past... I just put aside the time-set and enjoyed it for what it is.
I'm ready to go home and reserve some more but right now I'm reading Goddess of the Sea by P.C. Cast.
Just started an oldie Anne of Windy Poplars, I don't know why I never finished this series in my youth. I read the first two and then never made it through the third. Now I'm reading them sporadically and they really are sweet books.
I'm concentrating on finishing up Gone by Michael Grant & Crashed by Robin Wasserman. The skinned series reminds me a little of Cylons from BSG.
Heather wrote: "Amy wrote: "OMG!! Loved Angel in Buffy. That was one very gorgeous vampire! I totally agree with your view Alyson! Couldn't have said it better myself!"I started streaming Bones recently, from th..."
I love Buffy and Angel but Bones didn't do it for me. The actress who played Tempe seemed a little flat. But then I wasn't that impressed when I read one of the books.
I've just finished The Power of Two which is more middle grade than YA.Now I reading Once Bitten which could be YA so far except for the blood and gore though I get the feeling it might turn X-rated.
Madeline wrote: "Just started an oldie Anne of Windy Poplars, I don't know why I never finished this series in my youth. I read the first two and then never made it through the third. Now I'm reading..."I LOVED the Anne of Green Gables series when I was young. That and The Little House on the Prairie. Very sweet.
I'm working on 3 books at once right now. I used to read 2 and 3 books at a time when I was in high school, but I get more confused in my old age, haha...But I am listening to Glimmerglass as an audiobook in the car, reading Rot & Ruin on my iPhone/iPad, and reading a good old fashioned paperback copy of Annie on My Mind. They're all different enough that I am able to keep them straight.
I'm enjoying Glimmerglass more than I expected to, because I think I am not an audiobook kinda girl. It seems like the last two I listened to I really didn't enjoy. I find the narrator's voice to be irritating many times. (Which is funny, because I have an awful Minnie Mouse voice myself!)
But of the three, I am liking Rot & Ruin best. I'm in a zombie phase now... Having moved on from vampires and werewolves temporarily :)
I'm reading
by PC Cast, who wrote the House of Night series. This one is the start of a series and is just "eh." Mermaid romance.
I started reading Don't You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey. I should be finished with it by now. The book is only 124 pages. What can I say, I'm just not into this book. Though the theme is an important one. A teen who is having serious trouble at home. I think that if I were 15 I would have finished reading it in an hour and could have related.
I'm still working on my Glimmerglass audiobook, and am physically reading Everwild by Neal Shusterman. I've had this book off my shelf for weeks now, but just couldn't seem to pick it up. I started it last night, and of course I like it already... My reading habits are so odd!
I find it interesting to see how the writer bridges between books and helps remind the reader of what went before and enables him or her to step back into the story. I haven't read this particular book so I don't know how Megan Whalen Turner does it.
I'm reading The Sword Thief which is book three in the 39 clues series. Each book is written by a different author. This author Peter Lerangis (sp?) is pretty good. I've made it through this one quicker than the second. Good news it's only about 150 pages.
Goodness Little House on the Prairie is another one of those series I started and never completed. I'm going to have to add them to my list. I think I read Little House in the Big Woods a few times but never went any further despite my sister having all of them!

Honestly, right now I wish someone would give me the cliffnotes version. It keeps jumping time, place and perspective, so I am all confused. Pity, because the basic plot is interesting. Haven't given up on it yet though.
Alan wrote: "Just began reading Ballad: A Gathering of Faerie"I liked this book and it's sequel. I wish Maggie Stiefvater would go back to writing about the Fey instead of werewolves.
Roshini wrote: "I'm reading two books -

I'm reading The Eye of the World. It is really good, but soooooo long! I think it is probably considered Adult Fiction too.

In my own books I try to integrate the reminders in the action itself, but then I am not dealing with epic proportions. You are right, it's a tricky decision for the writer and wrongly handled it can put the reader off. In the case of epic stories, a glossary of characters or places can be useful.
Arya...no I haven't read Princess and the Hound. I didn't know this was book 2 when I bought it. I've been told that the first one is better. Have you read it?Angela...I so agree. The basic plot sounds so interesting, but I'm getting confused with the jumping storylines. Maybe it's just me...
I liked both of them. The first one was different, but I wouldn't say it was better, they were both great! I enjoyed the unique storyline! Have you read Mistwood? It was similar, maybe even a little better I thought!

Haven't read that one, but it's been on my tbr list for a while now. Any other recommendations?:-)
Hmmm . . . Well two books just jumped into the front of my mind, though they are different from any of the other ones. Northlander and The Shifter. Northlander is a little slow in the middle but I loved the beginning and the end!

I just got finished reading The Golden Compass, and now I'm reading Cut, both for my YA class. I love this class!
Kellyflower wrote: "Alan wrote: "Just began reading Ballad: A Gathering of Faerie"I liked this book and it's sequel. I wish Maggie Stiefvater would go back to writing about the Fey instead of werewolves."
I haven't quite finished it, but it's excellent. I wish I had discovered it earlier! I will certainly go on and read the other book.
Finished Ballad: A Gathering of Faerie. It was really excellent, but I want to re-read some parts before I write a review...
Jess wrote: "I just got finished reading The Golden Compass, and now I'm reading Cut, both for my YA class. I love this class!"Hi Jess. I'm surprised you resisted the temptation to go on to the second book of His Dark Materials. Maybe that is one of the disadvantages of reading for classwork: you can't follow your own inclinations... at least not straight away.
The Magician's Elephant? I certainly enjoyed it. I see by my review I didn't say enough about it to jog my memory for further details though, sorry.
Just finished Jim Butcher's Dead Beat (definitely not YA) and am finishing up Hush, Hush (love the cover).Next I'll be reading Enna Burning and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Does anyone know anything about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? Is it any good?

I cheated and saw the movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I liked it, so did my sister. But it's not for everyone. I also heard it takes a little while to get used to the names and things in the book.
I'm looking forward to seeing The Girl Who Played With Fire at the end of October.

Actually, the edition I have has all three of the books. I just don't have any time to read on! Hopefully over Thanksgiving I'll have a chance to read the other two!

Well happy reading! Some people find the last book heavier reading as Pullman gets into more philosophical considerations albeit within the story. I think I read the last book three or four times and then read it backwards, chapter by chapter to try to extricate myself from the story :-)
Alan I was thoroughly confused by book 3. Loved the first and second but felt lost with the third one. Amazed that you read it so many times.
Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) wrote: "Alan I was thoroughly confused by book 3. Loved the first and second but felt lost with the third one. Amazed that you read it so many times."I've got a hard head! And maybe a passing interest for philosophical questions about good and evil and the role of institutions :-) But mostly I was fascinated by the growing relationship between the two main characters. Without giving away (too much of) the story, the end struck such a familiar chord for me with its intense yearning for a love so strong that it cannot be.
