I liked it a lot. I was sucked in by all the challenges she had to face and then I liked that her choices were not what I expected. It was refreshing to read a book and not have everything you think is going to happen actually happen. :)

at work last night. I like it a lot so far, it pretty much drew me in with the first chapter. I can't remember ever reading a book with mermaids either so this should be nice and different.
Hmm. I've never read a mermaid book either. TheHans Christian Andersen tale is probably the only mermaid-centric thing I've ever read (and no, it is nothing like the Disney tale).I started Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and when I'm done with that, I think I'm going to start Deerskin, unless The Forest of Hands and Teeth finally comes in at the library.
The Dead and the Gone on audio and The Time Traveler's Wife in hardcopyThe Dead and Gone is the sequel to Life As We Knew It but with different a character's perspective. I loved the first one so I am hoping the 2nd holds up!
Tine Traveler's Wife is going much slower for me, but only because I have to actually sit down and pick it up! At least with audio books I can read as I do things.
April wrote: "Shannon, I just added that book to my TBR because of your posting the fabulous cover!"I have to say, the cover is what called out to me too. I'm about halfway through it and I like it a lot so far. The author has a really good use of imagery and all the characters are developed nicely.
On top of this being about mermaids, this is also historical as well. I don't think I've read too much in the historical fantasy genre. This is definitely a nice change of pace!

With the first three, it felt like there was a clear trajectory--everything in the book was leading up to something big, and I just didn't get that from this one. I'm hoping this was just the "set-up" book for number 5 and that one will make up for it..."Yes, someone finally understands! I'm thinking along the same lines, and that the next book will be much better. It just seemed so...different...like, Rose's reactions to what she did in the end, weren't as much as it was in Shadow Kiss, if you understand. I just thought it would have been better. But at the same time, there were bits that I liked, although I think most of it was just rambling, and nothing major happened in it..

It seemed Mead created the set-up for Blood Promise and was really excited about it, but then when she actually sat down to write it, it turned out to be not as fun as she'd anticipated. There were hints--like you said--throughout the book of the Blood Promise I had wanted, but overall it just wasn't there. Also, the whole conflict in Lissa's plotline seemed out of place to me somehow--the major conflicts in all the other books all made sense within the larger scheme of the series, and this one just felt...random? Too coincidental?
I'm almost finished with Un Lun Dun by China Mieville. I kind of don't want it to end. It's so much fun to read and included drawings are a great addition to the story. *the giraffe drawing is my favorite*
Jo wrote: "I am reading Peeps"I really liked this. It was a completely different take on vamp mythology, and had a fun gross out factor that makes it a good pick for boys, too.
I just finished The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. It was really good. Really interesting. I enjoyed it a lot.
Sara ♥ wrote: "I just finished The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. It was really good. Really interesting. I enjoyed it a lot."sooo gooood.

It really was! And the more I think about it, the more I like it.

Do you like it so far? I have to say I didn't like it all that much, but it was an interesting read...
Alright, finished Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (reviewed here in full, though the end is spoilery), and though I should have picked up Deerskin for the challenge, I picked up
Blood Bound instead. I needed something I was pretty positive I would like after PPZ.

But we'll see...I plan on reading Cupcake soon, too.
Zainab wrote: "Yeah, i think the Lissa thing was just out of nowhere, and the whole thing was quite random...did you like the book altogethor though?? "I did like it, overall. I really like the cast of characters Mead's come up with--some of her side characters, like Mia and Adrian--are my favorites, and it was nice to see more of them in this book. I have faith that the author knows where this series is going and she isn't going to let it jump the shark into something totally bizarre, so even though this book didn't feel particularly strong, I liked it if for no other reason that I know the story is going places. Also considering in the first three books I thought Mead did a good job of putting in plot twists that were logical and yet still unexpected, I'm hoping to see more of that in the next book.
I'm currently reading Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr. It's really interesting so far. I'm only 80 pages in...
So, I just joined not too long ago and posted on the Introductions, but this is the first time I am really posting in the discussions. Anyway, I just finished the first three books of the Uglies Series by Scott Westerfeld, which I loved. Now I am going to pick up Extras, but am a little hesitant since it seems to be a little different. And A Great and Terrible Beauty was just placed on hold for me, so I will be starting that one as well.
Extras is definitely different, but I liked it nearly as much as the rest; it was really close. I liked getting the continued story as well as the different cultural perspective. So, no reason to be hesitant.Welcome to the group!
I have two books in front of my next YA reads, one is a book group read in which I'm leading the discussion, so I have to do that one. Anyway, my next YA reads will be Catching Fire and A Certain Slant of Light.
Kathy wrote: "I have two books in front of my next YA reads, one is a book group read in which I'm leading the discussion, so I have to do that one. Anyway, my next YA reads will be Catching Fire..."Ooh! Good either way you go!
I'm going to start Deerskin later today, unless I get sidetracked (again).
Fiona wrote: "Started Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd today. I was reading A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens but found it excruciatingly boring. Which is such a shame as I've liked ..."I almost read that for last challenge, but I ended up taking it back without ever opening it. I just couldn't seem to summon up the mood for it. I will probably give it another chance sometime.
Heather, there have been quite a few McKinley ravers on here. I've read a few by her, and though I have issues with her grammar at times, once you get in, she can really tell a story.
Fiona wrote: "Started Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd today. I was reading A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens but found it excruciatingly boring. Which is such a shame as I've liked ..."Bog Child is on my short to-read list, Fiona. Let me know how you like it.
Misty wrote: "Kathy wrote: "I have two books in front of my next YA reads, one is a book group read in which I'm leading the discussion, so I have to do that one. Anyway, my next YA reads will be [book:Catching..."Thanks for the positive feedback, Misty.
Just finished Ink Exchange. This one was good... I really liked the characters... but I liked the first book better. We'll see how Fragile Eternity goes. (I'm on the library waiting list... next in line, I believe!) Is it just a trilogy, or will there be more books, does anyone know?
Shannon wrote: "I can't remember ever reading a book with mermaids either so this should be nice and different. "I actually won a mermaid book here, Alice at Heart. It was really good. It's not YA, but it was about self-identity and family secrets and all that kind of thing. I'd recommend it.
Oh, goodness... Let me check. Laura Hamilton. It's this version: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. It was way cute!
Misty wrote: "Extras is definitely different, but I liked it nearly as much as the rest; it was really close. I liked getting the continued story as well as the different cultural perspective. So, no reason to..."Thanks for the welcome and the encouragement to move forward with Extras. I just picked it up today and am excited about it. Did you start Deerskin? It's actually one of my favorite books, although I am not absolutely certain why that is. I read it at least once every two years or so. I think it might have something to do with the events of my life the first time I read it. Isn't it funny how events in your life that take place when you read a book can impact your impression of it?
Jennifer wrote: "I'm about a 1/3 into it and I'm not enjoying it as much as I did with Gingerbread. But we'll see...I plan on reading Cupcake soon, too."I didn't like the book enought to continue on with them...they just lacked something...??

I love Adrian! Although I have to admit, he had me a bit worried in this book...Yes, I can totally relate! The twist in the end was awesome though, I reckon. I also think Mead has a strong sense of where it's going, because I think the series were supposed to stop at five books, but then she extended it to six...so hopefully she does...

I actually didn't really like this book. I thought it was to...different from the rest, and it just didn't flow as well as the others did.
Could somebody please! teach me how to do the italics thingo, because i am lost over here...please...
To do italics, you put a left carrot bracket < then an i, then a right carrot bracket > before what you want italicized, after that section of text, you put a left carrot < a slash / an i, and a right carrot >If you click on the little green thing about the comment box that says "some html is okay" it explains how to do this and other formatting.
Katharine: I finished Deerskin last night, and I was less than impressed. There were things I loved, and I thought it really picked up when she comes to the hut, but I felt like the gems were buried in useless text that went in circles. It needed editing badly to me. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I've liked her other stuff more.
Now I feel like I'm in a rut. I don't know what I want to read. I started Night World, No. 1 Secret Vampire; Daughters of Darkness; Spellbinder, figuring I could read it quickly and review it for my Helluva Halloween challenge, but it just isn't what I'm in the mood for. Problem: I don't know what I am in the mood for...

And I do actually agree with you to a certain degree about the useless text. But, of course, there is some weird sentimentality that keeps me clinging to that particular book.
Yep, that's how you do italics. You can use a 'b' instead of 'i' for bold, u for underline, and s for strikethrough, also. But if you just want to quote what someone has said in a previous post, you can click the little "reply" link at the bottom right of their post (next to flag *)...
Finished The Earth Hums in B Flat which I really liked (even if it had a few flaws, minor stuff, really) and am now reading Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder. I'm not sure if it's considered YA or not, but it's about a 15 year old girl who starts to receive anonymous envelopes in the mail which contain a kind of course in philosophy... really interesting actually.
Also reading Hotel World, which is definitely not YA, but good anyway.

Fiona wrote: "I really enjoyed Bog Child, a very beautifully told story.I'll now be reading The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly... finally! "
Glad to hear you liked Bog Child, Fiona. I have it on my to-read list for this fall.
I'm currently reading Emily the Strange The Lost Days and I think it's just okay. Some parts are funny, but for the most part, I just want to get to something better.
Finished up Night World, No. 1 Secret Vampire; Daughters of Darkness; Spellbinder (I know we have lots of LJ Smith fans, but I though it was meh...). Starting Iron Kissed. I am getting so sucked into the Mercedes Thompson world.
Alisha wrote: "... but for the most part, I just want to get to something better."
I've had too many like this. Gave up on Hotel World (started out fine and lost me in the middle, grr) and am starting Being Emily instead. Just loving Sophie's World too... you were right Jeane! It's great!

Thank you Misty and Sara <3 I just finished A great and terrible beauty. I was kind of dissapointed by it, because i heard of a lot of good feedback about it...but it just wasn't my kind of book...I think some things in the book happened to quickly, so you didn't get the full impact of it...
I'm about the start Crank—my first Ellen Hopkins book! I love books written in poetry... (What My Mother Doesn't Know is one of my favorites) But we'll see about the content.............. not sure about the whole drugs thing....
Fiona wrote: "Eden wrote: "Now I'm reading Castle in the Air by Diana Wynne Jones."Woohoo!!! Hope you like it Eden."
I'm about 100 pages in and I really like it. All of Diana Wynne Jones books I have read so far I like.
