Yeah, that's how I feel. It's not so much a question of picking up, because it's not really slowly paced. It's just that she's kind of a cheesy writer sometimes, and I find myself rolling my eyes. I want to like them more than I am able.

Yeah, but do they have cool names like Ponyboy and Soda Pop? :p

Are you referring to things she chooses to have happen in the books or the way she expresses them - technique?

Definitely technique. That is always what I am picky on. I am a firm believer in willing suspension of disbelief, so you can make just about anything happen in your books as long as you do it well and lay the groundwork for it. It's her language (especially dialogue and inner monologue) that bothers me, and some of the choices she makes in her storytelling. It just sometimes seems immature, like I'm reading something written by a girl in high school. At least, the first book did. I am not far into #2, that's why I'm hoping for growth, but I fear I'll be disappointed. I am only a handful of pages in and I think I've rolled my eyes twice. If not for the challenge, I'd probably send this back to the library.
And Allison, I love the Uglies series. Pretties was my favorite, but they are all so fascinating once you can get into the flow of things. And they are kind of eerily believable.

How did you like The Amber Spyglass?

I liked The Subtle Knife more. I still enjoyed The Amber Spyglass.
*** SPOILERS BELOW ***
I liked how the romance turned out in the end. Like the saying goes it's better to be loved than never to have loved at all. I liked how the ending wasn't all happily ever after because that is not very realistic most of the time. I also enjoyed hearing all the bible references and the books take on Christianity... very interesting.

No need to steal, I give my words to you. Here. *drops them in your palm*

That book was reccommended to me, how is it?
I am currently reading Incantation by Alice Hoffman.

What did you think, Gail? I had mixed emotions. I thought the movie was actually better.

Now I'm reading Bewitching Season. It's off to a good start.

I have yet to read any Rand, even though they are my best friend's faves. I bought her everything by her one year for Christmas, and as I handed them over, I thought "I should really read these," and that was the last of it. I really should...

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I sort of liked the book for its different point of view. I thought Bruno seemed younger than 9, but I could believe he was quite naive and sheltered. Still, I much prefer "The Book Thief" (Zusak), "Sarah's Key" ( Tatiana de Rosnay), Night(Wiesel) , Diary of Anne Frank or Corrie ten Boom's book on the subject of the Holocaust

I just finished Mates, Dates, and Inflatable Bras by Cathy Hopkins about five minutes ago. It was another incredibly fast read. I could definately sympathize and relate to the main character, Lucy.
I'm about to begin Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls. It's been on the TBR forever, plus it's (IMO) classic YA/children's.

Just read The Host when you're done. In some ways, I liked that better.
I just finished Rebel Angels and think I am going to start Thirteenth Child. I'm also reading Little Women intermittenly, and thinking about taking To Kill a Mockingbird to the beach tomorrow. I might be crazy.

I'm not very far into the book, but I really like it so far.

But I still have Anne of Green Gables and The Wind in the Willows very near the top of the TBR pile.
What a cool pair of July Group reads! To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite 5-star reads ever. And The Book Thief's another very-near-the-top TBR.
So many books; so little time.

I'm going to try and read this as a Populist story. (as in the populism movement pertaining to farmers and William Jennings Bryan, blah blah I'm a history nerd blah blah blah)

I have looked at that book so many times! Maybe its the cool cover... Let me know what you think.

I think all of the Oz books are more adult than people give them credit for. Baum had some things to say, and Oz was just a medium.

Great! Can't wait to hear your opinion of it. :-)

I'm reading how i live now. It's a Printz winner, so it should be good. I'm not in love with it yet though.

My son, who is 22, and I are going to see HP6 tonight. I was thinking that I owe a lot to J.K. Rowling. My son and I started sharing the Harry Potter experience with the first book when he was in elementary school, and here we are still sharing it. Is that great or what?

Im with you Kristen what teaser for Percy Jackson: *dies* that is not something I want to hear lol.
We are taking my son to see the latest HP for his 9th birthday, Im hopping to take him tomorrow on his birthday but it may have to wait until things settles down around here.

I had said I was starting Mysterious Benedict Society, which was true at the time. But I picked up Sunshine by Robin McKinley at the library yesterday, and I told myself I was only going to read a few pages. I'm half way through. My last few challenge books will just have to wait.
