Sarah | 18549 comments Let me say it Travis - the TV series actually gets better with each series which is quite unusual for TV series. Normally they get done to death and they progressively get worse. The latest season was awesome. A couple of the episodes I had to rewatch segments because it was so amazing. Obviously this last season has spoilers for the books which you may not want to know about before the book comes out. I was holding off as long as possible but gave in.

Kristie | 19123 comments That's so sad! She missed completing the whole alphabet by one letter...

message 255: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I saw something on Twitter about the letter Y being the last letter in the alphabet. I understand now what the reference was to.

message 256: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I'm heartbroken to learn that Katherine Kellgrin, narrator of Jacky Faber, Royal Spyness, Kane Chronicles, amongst many other great books died of an aggressive cancer yesterday.

message 257: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, that is so sad. She narrated so many other books that I have listened to. I first heard her doing Jacky though.

I've just found out about Sue Grafton through your posts and am feeling so sad. I stumbled on the alphabet series by accident (copy left in the bathroom book-swap pile at work). It helped me get back into reading. This is one of the few series Ive ever finished. After reading Y is for Yesterday, I was worried what would happen to Kinsey in the final installment :-( Forgot to worry about Sue.

End of an era :'-(

Sarah | 18549 comments Oh no. I haven't read any of her stuff either although I own one and keep meaning to try others too.

Me neither. Maybe a buddy read for her this year is in order.

message 264: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I'm headed over to the buddy read planning thread.

message 265: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Le Guin was a favorite author of mine in my late teens. I've reread some favorites over the years. Left Hand of Darkness, Earthsea trilogy, Dispossessed, Lathe of Heaven (my absolute favorite and it's a quick read). I'm a little perplexed that I didn't read any books she authored post 1985, when I started graduate school.

message 266: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I read some of her books many years ago, but the book of hers that I remember best is a children's book that I read to my kids a few dozen times. The book was "Fire and Stone," a wonderful story about two kids and a dragon. Fire and Stone

What age do you suggest this for?

message 268: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments It's a picture book, probably better for kids who are still being read to, rather than independent readers.

message 269: by Tejas Janet (last edited Jan 24, 2018 04:37PM) (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Thanks, Casceil. Sounds like it might work for my triplet nephews about to turn 3 yrs old. Any others come to mind for this age group? I'm trying to pick some out for their birthday.

message 270: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Jamberry. It's a rhyming book, and very catchy. "One berry, two berry, pick me a blueberry, Hat berry shoe berry, in my canoe berry." etc.

message 271: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Looks really freaking fun : ) Thanks much, Casceil.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Wombat Stew is a good Aussie one.

"Wombat stew, Wombat stew, Gooey, brewy, Yummy, chewy, Wombat stew!"

(view spoiler)

message 273: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments Apparently Jack Ketchum died of cancer on Jan 24th. He was one of Stephen King's favourite authors. I read Hide and Seek a year ago.

message 274: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Thank you, Rusalka, for the book suggestion. Another winner!!

message 275: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments sStephen King mentioned an author dying earlier. I don't think it was Jack Ketchum I think it was another one. Not sure. Icant remember the name at all. Maybe I saw the Ketchum one but it doesn't seem right to me.

message 276: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Not trying to sound lazy I just don't have twitter on this computer so I can't go check right now. I'll try to remember tomorrow to see if there was also another author mentioned by King recently

message 277: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Dallas Mayr let me see if there is a link for that name

Hmm. actually I think Dallas Mayr is the real life name of Jack Ketchum. This is too much I'm going to bed. lol

message 278: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments Egad! I went to twitter to find Stephen King's tweet, only to discover that people are tagging me and talking about my death!

message 279: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments Oh, and yes - Dallas Mayr is the person behind the pseudonym Jack Ketchum.

message 280: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments People are tagging you Janice? This thread is for authors dying I'm not sure people are labeling me as Twitter as dead applies. You might need to start a new thread lol. #truthisstrangerthanfiction
I take it there's a story behind this?

message 281: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Wait I think I follow you on Twitter how did I miss this. Heads off to Twitter kand

message 282: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I noticed a couple of months ago, that people were tagging me on Twitter and commenting on a picture. Presumably, I was supposed to be one of the women in the picture. I just let it go.

But this morning, there was a notification that I had been tagged, so I went to see what it was all about and some preacher was talking about a Janice M Budd who had died, and lauding her praises. So I replied to his tweet and suggested that he may want to remove his tag and honour the correct Janice Budd. He had about 3 messages where he talked about her, but only one in which he tagged me.

How many Janice M Budds are there in the world?

message 283: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments And, LOL! I thought I was in the "Whatcha Doing thread" when I posted that, but then decided to just leave it here. Do wanna-be-authors count in this thread?

message 284: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Weird

message 285: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Well it is a big world. But you wouldn't think they'd all be on Twitter.

message 286: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Wait. Even if they are on Twitter who tags deceased people. And if Janice was surprised to learn of her death how many people were freaked out when Janice tweeted back?!

message 287: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I wonder if the problem is that she's not on Twitter, and when they do a search, I'm the only one who comes up. I have a rose as a profile picture, so they can't identify me that way.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Oh hell, missed this. Cherie, I know you have read him. Peter Temple died, who wrote the Jack Irish series (which is a great couple of tv series and mini movies with Guy Pearce).

message 290: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments OH, that's too bad, Rusalka. Darn cancer!

Yes, I was wondering if we were going to get another Joe Casin story from him. I have not taken up with the Jack Irish series yet, but Jane Harper has made want more Australia again. I finished up with her 2nd Aaron Faulk book, The Force of Nature, yesterday. I enjoyed the debut novel more, but still, it was a good story.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Mary Oliver just passed. It's weird because my wife just started to try reading poetry and asked for one of her collections for Christmas. And now she's gone. Looks like she has a lot of poetry books so my wife has plenty more to go through

message 298: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I don't read a lot of poetry, but I have read one of her books and have another on my TBR list.

message 299: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My wife has seemed to really enjoy her poetry so it must be relatable and easy to read. I know she's not big on metaphors and symbolism and all the stuff I love. Which is why I suck at poetry because I'm either digging too deep or it goes over my head. She got a book of Maya Angelou and I spend as much time on one single poem as she takes on probably ten. Because I know there's a deeper meaning to some of them and I know what it is yet can't quite complete the thought. She has some deep thoughts. Maya that is

message 300: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yes, I have read many of Angelou's books too, Travis. There are times when a poem just strikes such chord, that it is hard to get off of it. The Good Reads newsletter used to have a poem every month, but they have not had one for a long time.
