Lynda | 836 comments I've heard of Wallander, might be on Netflix, but I've never read any of the books, either.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I just read Harper Lee passed away, age 89. I'm on my phone and it was a Dutch news website app, so I don't have a link.

message 155: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments That's a shame. I was in the library last week and they had a display of books for authors and celebrities who'd passed away in 2015. I took a picture. I'll upload it when I can. If they do one for 2016 passing they'll need a bigger table. :-(

Of course I've read To Kill a Mockingbird at least twice and seen the movie several times.

And I've read books by Eco, too.

Me too Cherie. Sad that we're losing too many artists, musicians, and writers I grew up with.

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments W.P. Kinsella, author of Shoeless Joe died today. He had a doctor-assisted death. The news article was brief but did say that it is not known what disease he had.

News Article

ETA - Here's a better article from CBC News. I find MSN news tends to lean towards the sensational.

message 178: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments That's too bad he had to go that way. I'm glad I finally got around to reading his book. It was a tribute to his imagination and his creativity. I had no idea he had written so much.

"Vladimir Zeldin, believed to be the world’s oldest working actor, has died aged 101, after spending 71 years at the same Moscow theatre.
The Russian actor appeared on stage as recently as last month, using a walking stick due to a broken hip, to appear in the play The Dance Teacher by the Spanish playwright Lope de Vega.
He had appeared in the play more than 1,000 times"

message 185: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I don't know if my fellow doggie lovers saw this but Luis Motlavan (sp) the co-author of Until Tuesday (can't link since I'm on my phone) passed away last week :(
His service dog is Tuesday and he has written a few books with Tuesday :-) no reason for his death has been said other than he did have some heart problems but they haven't said cause of death. He passed away a week ago and I just saw it on the news last night. My heart is broken. I really enjoyed Until Tuesday and I really want to read the rest of his books.

message 187: by Tasha (new)

Tasha aw, that's sad. Do you know what he died of? I read that book a while back and see that I gave it 4 stars.

message 188: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments He was found dead in his hotel room in El Paso, Texas. Cause of death is unknown, but no sign of foul play. Tuesday wasn't with him on this trip. He was 43 years old.

The El Paso newspaper also gives this info:

"Donations are being asked to be made in Montalvan’s name to ECAD or Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities. The organization can be reached at ECAD1.org, at (860) 489-6550 or P.O. Box 831, Torrington, CT., 06790."

Mariab | 3059 comments So many taken away this 2016...!

message 197: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Well, death is part of life. So many lives taken every year. Mostly not famous; nobody we've heard of. Is it really so sad? She made it to 60. That's pretty good! Let's celebrate her life, her honesty, her humor and her ability to write!

message 198: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments When someone first learns of a death, whether that's of a famous person or someone closer to them, it is normal to feel shocked, sad and grief. So yes, it is sad. And people are entitled to feel that way. Yes it's part of life and people die all the time but it's still sad when someone is taken from your life, regardless of their age.

So these people we are mentioning are celebrities and are not close to us but some of the people this year have had massive influences on peoples lives which can make their deaths more felt. In some cases, more than you'd expect.

Personally, i think 60 is young to die. I hope i live until I'm way past that. 90 sounds good to me thanks. Carrie Fisher died before her mother!

I agree that we should celebrate her life (and anyone else who has died) and what they have achieved and that will come but it is not the first thing that is done in the grieving process. I am speaking generally here about all deaths, not just Carrie Fisher or celebrities here.

message 199: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Not knowing she was an author I clicked on Janice's link. There was an interview from Goodreads did last month. Interesting while at same time maybe greads could have focused more on the author and less on her affair with Harrison Ford. I mean this is Goodreads not TMZ

message 200: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I didn't realise she had been an author before her recent book which was released only recently.
