Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I see his name on paperback books at the grocery store all of the time, but I have never read anything of his.

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments Matthew McConaughey, Penelope Cruz, Steve Zahn acted in the movie adaptation of Sahara. I did read the book after I saw the movie.

See his titles featured at the library all of the time.

Underwater intrigue? Sounds as though I should have read him. Ordered first book in the Dirk Pitt series.☺

message 354: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Noooo. I love Clive Cussler novels. His Dirk Pitt was like a James Bond Jacques Cousteau.

message 355: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I might have to give him a try, Renee.

message 356: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I think you would like it Cherie. Some of the exploits remind me of the pendergast stories. Cussler has multiple series but Dirk is my favorite

message 357: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4524 comments I've read several of his Dirk Pitt books. The only thing that ever really bothered me about them was that Cussler always managed to insinuate himself into the story. It got to the point where I'd be waiting for the scene.

message 358: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My library has a whole table set up featuring a huge picture of him and many of his books right near the entrance.

I will check out Dirk Pitt one of these days, just to see. I still have the new Pendergast yet to read, Renee.

message 359: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I have the new Pendergast also..I am saving it for something to read in April. I will be having a minor procedure. I need something to entertain me while I recover

message 360: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sounds like a good plan, Renee. You will not have to rush through it and can savor it.

Oh no, thaat is sad. He wasn't that old at all.

message 363: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's very sad. I just googled, he was only 55 and died of cancer. So young.. I also really enjoyed his books, it makes me sad never to be able to read anything new by him.

Not an author, but I read yesterday that Bob, the cat from A Street Cat Named Bob: How One Man and His Cat Found Hope on the Streets died a few days ago.

message 364: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Oh, Bob has died? That's so sad too :( I've almost read all the books.

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments That's so sad! The Shadow of the Wind was one of my favourite books.

message 369: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I still have his last book in The Cemetery of Forgotten books to read. It is so heartbreaking to loose such a talented author so young.

Kristie | 19123 comments Janice wrote: "That's so sad! The Shadow of the Wind was one of my favourite books."

I have that on my TBR. Maybe I'll try to read it sooner than planned.

message 371: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments I had not realized there was a fourth book - The Labyrinth of the Spirits. Will have to check it out.

message 372: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments The author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values Robert M. Pirsig. I was planning on reading his book for a while now, years, actually, after I've heard about it in class years ago. I think I'll pick it up.

message 373: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Sep 08, 2020 07:35AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments He apparently died April 2017. That book was all the rage back in the 90's, but I have yet to read it.

message 374: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Looks like one of those books you either love or hate, Saar. I do not have it on my TBR list and cannot see myself adding it. ;o)

I saw this last night. I've never read any of his books, so I didn't know who he was but the article I read was saying that he was a really good guy.

message 377: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4524 comments I didn't realize Terry Goodkind had passed away. I own the first five books in the Sword of Truth series and have read the first 2 and liked them. When you look at the reviews of the books, it seems it's either love or hate. I found that to be true for the Thomas Covenant series by Stephen Donaldson too. Both series are Epic/High Fantasy.

message 378: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I started the first book in the Sword of Truth series quite recently. I think I would have fared better with a print edition rather than the audiobook. Sad to hear that he died.

message 379: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I have never read any of his books either, but I knew who he was, only because I used to get his name mixed up with another author. I see his name, and look at his first series book, and then say - oh, not him. I have seen the comparison between his series and the Thomas Covenant series too. I started them once, but gave up. Too bad, he was not that old.

message 380: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Oh no, my sister read all Terry Goodkind's books and I still need to read them. Sad to know that he died.

message 381: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I heard earlier about Terry Goodkind. I own loys of his books but not managed to complete any yet. He has a big fan base though and he'll be missed by many.

Strange...There was something in the news about him being passed away. Maybe I've heard it wrong.

Definitely something to read in print, Janice. I can't imagine listening to them and keeping all the characters straight. Too long and involved.

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments Roxanne Conrad who wrote as Rachel Caine has passed away today from cancer. She wrote Stillhouse Lake series and Ink and Bone series, among other stories. I have several of her books to read. So sad.

message 386: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments I've seen both series around, but never read any by her. She was looks young in her profile pic. So sad.

message 390: by Cherie (last edited Mar 26, 2021 03:40PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My granddaughter just came in and asked me if I knew who Beverly Cleary was. I laughted at her and said "Yes, she has been around since I was a kid." I told her that I had read many, many of her books. She said that she was asking because her friend posted that she had passed away. She died yesterday, just three weeks short of her 105th birthday. Most people remember her for her Ramona books, but I liked Henry Huggins and Ralph S. Mouse the best. She was an Oregon native.

message 391: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments That is sad, Cherie.

I also heard today that Larry McMurtry died yesterday at age 84. Lonesome Dove has been in my TBR forever.

message 392: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I remember Dear Mr. Henshaw and I loved Ramona. I still remember the story about the toothpaste. And one about a haircut.
It is amazing that she was still alive.

I always think of Ramona anytime we drive by or I hear Klickitat St on the radio, and my son Evan remembers reading a few of her books and that she wrote about Portland. It's sad, but what an amazingly long life she lived, and the amount of children who's lives were shaped by all her books.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I have had Lonesome Dove on my TBR list forever too, Sandra. I did not hear about his passing. He wrote so many wonderful books too, but I have never managed to read even one of them.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oh wow, just read Lucinda Riley died. I think I read only one of her books and hated it, but I know her Seven Sisters series is insanely popular so I still feel a bit shocked. She was only 55, but apparently had been battling cancer for 4 years. Not many people knew about that.
