I'm about 26% through. It's just so conversational and I don't feel like the story is getting anywhere yet.

Please tell me that it gets better?

Hope you enjoy The Ocean at the End of the Lane as much as I did. One of the best books I have read in ages.

Michele I just finished The Devil of Nanking by Mo Hayder - it wasn't my favourite of her books, although it was still very good, a bit slow to start, finally got going about 3/4 the way through. I am now reading River of Destiny by Barbara Erskine , I haven't read a Barbara Erskine book for quite a few years, am enjoying it so far

Michelle, what I listened too this morning gave me a real shock and I can't wait to get back in the car to continue listening to it. So yes I can say it has improved dramatically for me and I just hope it continues this way.

Keep at it and let me know how you’re going with it & if you felt the same :)

Funny - I have been put off by the title.

Arggh! I think, as a matter of personal endogenous necessity, I would categorically exclude any book with that particular title from consideration for "cognitive ingestion." More seriously, maybe it's only me, but I can't imagine why anyone with health problems would want to read a book whose advertised message is the ineluctability of death. Mortality and its attendant horror we shall always have with us, but who wants to be reminded? :)

We don't have any buddy read threads Lit Bug:) You can open one if you wish, put it in "you and your books" :)

I would but later in the month. Right now I have about 10 books I am committed to read for various challenges! I like to get those read first and then I am free to read what I like.

Lit Bug (Foram) | 402 comments Thanks Brenda and Phrynne, it's alright, maybe I'll just open a discussion when I'm done :) For now, I'll open a Buddy Reads thread.

You should only need a Buddy Reads thread Lit Bug, as they'd overlap otherwise:)

message 5473: by Lit Bug (Foram) (new)

Lit Bug (Foram) | 402 comments Oh... I thought you suggested I open a thread so that everyone could put in their requests/accept other people's requests - a platform to place/accept buddy reads requests.

But I'm okay with what you propose :) Won't open a separate discussion...

message 5475: by Lit Bug (Foram) (new)

Lit Bug (Foram) | 402 comments So what do you think is better? Shall I keep the Buddy Reads thread open to all to find co-readers or keep it to myself as a discussion thread for the book? I figured others too might want to look for reading partners...

Good thing it is one of the funniest books I have ever read, then. :P

message 5485: by Mark (new)

Mark Ah, well... At least it's traumatic in a funny sort of way, then. :) Seriously, I could use a funny read right about now, so if it isn't actually a lugubrious meditation on horrible mortality, decay and moribundity, I might give it a try. :)

message 5488: by Bronwyn (new)

Bronwyn Rykiert | 315 comments I have added some much needed books to my TBR list??? Thanks for the ideas.

I have just finished listening to In the Winter Dark by Tim Winton and it seems I am on my own in that I did like it at all and I did not like any of the characters. I read it for the winter challenge.

I am currently listening to Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon and reading The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd for book club.

I have waited a long time to read the Outlander series and though the listening is good, they seem so long winded. I am finding that I am starting to lose interest as the book is so long. I am about to take a break and go onto my next book in the winter challenge otherwise I might spend the next month listening to this book.

Is it SF? It sounds good, but I can't make out the genre...

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) It sort of defies being a particular genre. It's a funny, scary, sci-fi fantasy action-thriller. :P

Jan (janmerry) | 68 comments Don't you love discovering a new author. At the moment I'm caught up with Hans Fallada. New to me but he's been around since 1930s. It's all WW2 Germany and you would think that's a tired topic, but his writing and characterisation are really something. I plan a review on Alone in Berlin and Little Man, What Now? if I ever have the time. Thank you to the Good Reader who put me on to him.
