Seven Percent Solution
Cool Text: Logo and Graphics Generator

~ Seven Percent Solution ~
For seven weeks in June and July, the challenge we put forward to all the Teams is 7%! If only one Team completes this task, we will award them seven (7) additional books/points. If it is split, as it was for May, we will award each Team reaching the goal four (4) additional books/points. Any Team that completes at least three (3) of the following categories, for a total of 21 books, will receive a one (1) book advantage.

There are 12 months in a year. Since the main goal is to reach is 1350, and you want to stay on track, that means you need to read 112.5 books a month. We’ll round down to 112, because seven divides so nicely into it. We’ll give you a little leeway and set the goal as a little less than half your Team’s books - at 49 - plus give you an extra couple weeks. Works out to be a book a day. ☺

It is NOT mandatory that all Team Members participate. You may do this challenge as a Team, or have only one member do it. Yes, one member may do one book or some or all seven books from one category. For example, one member may read, for Category #2 Color of the Team Ranked Ahead, three books and leave the remaining four for their other Team Members.

In addition, if a Team Member says they are NOT going to participate due to time constraints or lack of interest, but a watchful Captain or Co-Captain notices that one of their books applies towards a challenge category, said Captain/Co-Captain may use the book.

GOAL: Your Team’s mission is to read 49 books. That would be seven books from a choice of seven categories. Yes, you may read 14 books from one category that you adore (essentially doing it twice), and ignore another completely. However, you may NOT read two books from one category and five from another to equal seven. Nor, if you are doing a category twice, read 10 from one and four from another. Any book finished April 12th or after.

DURATION: June 1 - July 19, 2013. You have seven weeks to complete this challenge. This would only include any book finished in that time period.

1. “Behind Enemy Lines”: Go “Behind Enemy Lines” and have some of your members read books that are from the enemies’ bookshelves. Yes, more than one person may read the same book. Please state the Team and person from whose shelf you are stealing.

2. Color Ahead: Read books with a cover that has a predominant color of the Team ranked ahead of you in the last Sunday Update of May or June. If your Team is ranked first, then use the color of the Team ranked last.

3. Color Behind: Read books with a cover that has a predominant color of the Team ranked just behind you in the last Sunday Update of May or June. If your Team is ranked last, then use the color of the Team ranked first.

4. Book of the Month or “Buddy Read”: Read books that are a NBRC BOM or “buddy read” AND participate in the posting Discussion Questions. (Please check with Mod running the discussion about the day’s DQs for which you want to volunteer.) NOTE EDIT BELOW! Yes, you may ask to have a “buddy read” set-up for a particular book. It must be posted in the regular NBRC group, under the alphabetical authors’ listings, and includes the regular NBRC members not involved in the Tower Teams Reading Challenge. You may all read the same book, or pick and choose which ones you want to read, or from those already designated.

5. Spell-It-Out: Read books whose title, author’s (first or last), or series name would spell “N.B.R.C.   T.O.W.E.R.   T.E.A.M.S.   R.E.A.D.I.N.G.   C.H.A.L.L.E.N.G.E.” You may ignore the indefinite and definite articles (a, an, and, the), if that helps. Special Note: You can ONLY use a letter as many times as it occurs. For example, you may have two people read a book with a title, author or series name that starts with “T,” but you may NOT have three people doing so. Yes, you only have to do seven books. Unless you choose to do it twice, or even thrice, in which case you still MAY NOT repeat the letters, unless they are repeated in the spelling.

6. From May’s R-a-T Mini Challenges: Read books with a predominantly green color; or have a flower on the cover; or are set in a favorite holiday destination; or have a moon on the cover; or have a iconic landmark or monument on the cover; or would spell out “A.N.Y.   R.O.S.E.” (same rules apply as for #5). Yes, you may count one book that has a flower, one that has a landmark, and one that helps spell “any rose” to reach a combined total of seven (7) books.

7. Seven: Read books with seven letters in the title. Read books that have seven words in the title. You may include the series name, or not, and you may ignore the indefinite and definite articles (a, an, and, the), whichever is to your benefit. Or read books that are the seventh book in a series. Or are written by an author with seven letters in their first, last, or combined names - and initials, if that helps. Or you may read books, that total seven words with the title, series name, and author combined. (Example: Summer Knight, The Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher.) Or if the title has the word “seven” in the title. Or read a book that was originally published in the seventh month (July). Or you may spell out “S.E.V.E.N.   U.P.” using the same spell-it-out criteria mentioned above.

REPEATING: Please note that Category #5 is the only category you may repeat three times, and ignore two other categories. All others, you may repeat twice, and choose to ignore one other category.

POSTING: Captain and Co-Captains, please only post in this thread when a category is finished . Please Note: Once you have posted a category as finished, that is it. NO SWAPPING AROUND BOOKS, ONCE A CATEGORY IS POSTED.

Captains and Co-Captains, you may start a thread over in the "sister group," or have your discussion in the regular NBRC group thread.

~ “Buddy Reads” and the 7% Solution Challenge ~

With regards to the 7% Solution Challenge taking place within the Tower Teams Reading Challenge, the Mods have decided that you do NOT need to create a day’s worth of DQs to satisfy Category #4 - Books of the Month or any impromptu “buddy reads.”

As far as the current BOMs, the Mods would appreciate any help (and there might be a cupcake or two in it for your Team, if you do a set).

Note: We added start dates to the threads’ titles.

Requirement for 7% Completion
Nevertheless, we stipulate that members participating in that challenge need to give more than a two sentence statement. Something more than, “I loved it. But hated the cliffhanger at the end...” repeatedly, member after member.

One example we liked was a comment or two at the end of every chapter or two where people put these under “view spoiler” (view spoiler). This is fine with us, though that makes it difficult to access for members reading on their phones.

Therefore, there needs to be some kind of designated stopping points for discussion - by chapters with view spoilers, as mentioned, or defined sections - agreed upon or defined by someone willing to make the suggestion.

If you like, you may reserve a post that refers the Mods to your comments.

Example (For this example, they all go to the same post; hopefully, you get the idea.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. May we choose more than one category to do twice? So we can ignore two? Or do we only get to do that once?

A2. You may do so for more than one category.

Q2. For challenge #4, do we have to answer ALL the questions in the BOTM's questions?

A2. No. That is NOT a requirement of the "buddy read" or BOMs in general. You may pick and choose which questions you decide to answer. Just some discussion is required. However, it would be nice if you interacted with the participants that respond to your DQs.

Q3. If it's one of the blue teams, will you accept ANY shade of blue, or does it have to be the blue that matches the team name?

A3. Any color, within reason, compared to a Team's door color. If someone has choose neon magenta for Tickle Me Pink, probably not.

Q4. For #1: Do they have to be books that have been shelved for the Tower challenge, or can they be any book on the shelf of an 'enemy'? Does it have to be a book s/he has read, or can it be one on his/her to-read shelf?

A4a. Yes, them must have been posted by a Team Member for the Tower Teams Reading Challenge. It must be on their designated "TT" shelf. CLARIFICATION: Only those books "read" and visible under that person's "view books" link of their Home Page challenge will count.

A4b. Some people "tag" books as "to-read" and for their designated "TT" shelf. I thought that was what you meant.

However, if someone else on your Team is a friend of someone's whose shelves are "private" and they can see a book on that shelf, I will allow that you may read it, too. Only fair, right?

I'll change it so that it reads "view books" as seen by Moderator.

Q5. "Can buddy read be between two members of the same team or it has to be mix of teams and more people participating?"

A5. Yes, a "buddy read" may be between two members of the same Team.

Q6. Do all 7 books needs to be same color? For example, team before/after in May is pink, but in June is blue. So can that be 4 pink and 3 blue books? Or needs to be 7 pink/blue books?

A6. You may mix and match for this one. ☺

Q7. ❀ Oo ❀ wrote: "4# Buddy Reads
In June, some of my teammates & a member form Mango Tango are doing some buddy reads together. Can I count those books as the "buddy reads"?"

A7. Yes, as long as it meets the criteria as spelled out in #4, i.e. posted in the regular NBRC group, etc.

Q7b. ❀ Oo ❀ wrote: "Just to clarify, but the buddy reads are set up in the Sister NBRC group, will that still allow it to be acceptable?"

A7b. No. We want your genius shared with the rest of the NBRC group at large. You may, of course, elect to carry on with your "buddy reads" over in the "sister group." They just will NOT count toward completing #4 of this challenge, unless they fall into another category.

Q7c. The BR need not necessarily be done within our team or group, does it? I have 2 BR that I'll be doing in other groups. Will that count?"

A7c. I'm sorry, no. They will NOT count. They must be posted somewhere in the NBRC regular group. This was a decision made by all Mods.

Q8. ❀ Oo ❀ wrote: "* To participate in this challenge, we'll have to read 7 books, of which the books can either be ALL from one category OR 2 from each with a plus 1?"

A8. There are 49 books required. You may read 40 and the rest of your Teammates may read the other nine books, if that is what you want.

Q8b. "Expanding on question 8:

Could I read a total of 21 books, where I read 14 books from Behind Enemy Lines and then 7 books are made up of reading 7 books in one other category?"

A8b. Yes. If this is all you did (21 books), your Team would receive one (1) book advantage, regardless of who won the challenge.

Q8c. "Also, can the participating members in a team read more (of) the same categories? For instance, if I had someone else willing to read 14 books from Behind Enemy Lines or 7 books for Buddy Reads, would those books count?

A8c. No. Not if you already did - or plan to do - 8b. That would have your Team doing Category #1 “Behind Enemy Lines” a total of four times. All categories can only be done twice, with the exception of #5 Spell-It-Out: “N.B.R.C.   T.O.W.E.R.   T.E.A.M.S.   R.E.A.D.I.N.G.   C.H.A.L.L.E.N.G.E.” - which may be done three times, for a total of 21 books.

Q9. "What if there is an old BOM/Buddy read that we haven't read and would like to.. will that count?

For example, I intend to read A Discovery of Witches which NRBC did in April 2011. I also know a mber of Moonstone who wants to read this. If we read it and discussed it on the existing thread (even though it is REALLY old) does that count?"

A9. Yes, you may. You may use the DQs already written by the Mod Account for a previous BOM or "buddy read," if there are some, such as for The Restorer, with maybe coming up with some general DQs to qualify for a "revisit-buddy read."

In the case of Discovery of Witches, there are NOT any DQs, so you would need to do a set of DQs for each reader from your Team asking for the book to count for their BOM/BR book. Sections must follow the "buddy read" criteria, i.e. 50-75-100 pages as a day's "breakdown." Of course, you're welcome to do fewer pages, but that means more DQs, probably.

Q10. "For #7: Do we need to stick to one criteria? For example, can 3 books be 7th in series, 2 books published in 7th month and 2 books with 7 words?"

A10. No, you do NOT have to stick to one criteria within a category.

Q11. "For the June Color Ahead challenge, is it safe to pick our cover color now? Or should we adjust it if standings change? Also, since we're in the lead, would our color be Tumbleweed (seems to just be forming) or Bronze (formed team)? Honestly, those seem like the same colors now that I typed it out...lol."

A11. Well, I wouldn't count your chickens before they hatch, but you can take an educated guess.

In the case of a "newly forming group." I would say you may choose that color or the color of a group with a goal total near 1,350.

Q12. For the seven category, can we also do titles with seven letters in them?"

A12. Yes, isn't that in there? It was at one time, but I messed with the wording... did I loose it in editing? Drat! Fixed it.

Q13. "I have a book with "seven" in the title, will that work for anything?"

A13. I'll say, "yes" since I left out "seven letters in the title," which I just added.

Q14. "Are all our books supposed to fall into those categories?"

A14. Yes. However, you may repeat a category and choose something else, thereby doing 14 books in one category.

The exception is Category #5; you are allowed to do it three times = 21 books.

So, you could do:
Cat#1 - 14 books

Cat#2 - 14 books

Cat#5 - 21 books

Total = 49 books.
Q15. "Just a clarification on Cat#6: Can I read more that one book with say a flower on the cover or is it only one book of each sub category?"

A15. You may read a flower bookcover, a green bookcover, a moon bookcover, a landmark/monument bookcover, any of the letters provided, etc. You can even repeat any of those 'sub-categories' as many times as you desire to reach 7 or 14 books.

Q16. "What if I, as Captain, notice that one of my non-participating members has read a book that is on another team member's bookshelf. Since I did the spying and not them, can I still list it?

A16. Certainly. Just keep track of who and which Team.

Clarification: Cat#2 & #3 (Ahead and Behind)

For Categories #2 & #3 of the 7% Solution Challenge the Team ahead and behind does NOT change every week. It is determined by the last Sunday Updates in May and June.

When July 1st comes, members may begin using additional colors, if you have any change in who is ahead or behind you on the last Sunday Update in June. You may continue using the old colors, too.

Okay, we've made a decision to up the reward, since everyone thinks this challenge is so hard.

If only one Team completes this task, we will award them seven (7) additional books/points. If it is split, as it was for May, we will award each Team reaching the goal four (4) additional books/points.

In addition:

Any Team that completes at least three (3) of the following categories, for a total of 21 books, will receive a one (1) book advantage.

Rosina | 1800 comments Can the same book be read/count for category 1 and then for category 7? So I guess can we cross category our boooks?

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments So, basically, team members can just read books and captains can slot them into any category that fits?

Rosina | 1800 comments Ok nevermind just realized it has to be 49 books in total so 1 book couldnt count twice....

That would NOT really benefit you, Zina, in the end, as you still have to read 49 books in 49 days. It would probably do you good to keep track of all the categories a book can fit into, however.

For the purposes of this challenge, and because their Team goals are so low, we are going to allow Cadet Blue and Pewter Blue to work together as a Team.

Simply Put: 49 books in 49 days, 7 books from each category per Team. A Team Member may mix and match their books - as many as they want to read, all 49, in fact - from any of the categories.

Sorry, Zina, I left out the word NOT in Post #44... and that you figured it out on your own. ☺

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Also, I know I seem to be a spellchecker, but SOLUTION is usually spelled with only one L. It is correct in the posts but not in the name of the thread.

Many thanks, T! I guess you are the only one reading the thread titles. LOL!
