md | 83 comments For #5 is it confusion because there are letters left over at the end (that we don't need to read) or that they're not quite sure how it would work? If it's the latter I have a partial example for that. I could continue it and pm it to someone/post it here if you think that would help?

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments This may seem like a silly question but I presume all books have to be >160 pages?

It would be very helpful, if you could post it here, md. Thank you. Could you include the letters N.B.R.C. to the front of it. I've decided those letters are going to be added. It will give people more options.

Not silly at all, since we allowed them in May. Yes, all books must be >160 pages this time.

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3792 comments Is there a way to do a "bulk" search of everyone's books in the NBRC group, for a specific book to see if anyone has shelved it?

Can we use the first letter of ANY word in the book title? Or only the FIRST word (ignoring A, An and The)?

Moderators of NBRC | 33496 comments Mod
If NBRC has shelved the book, go under bookshelf link on our Home Page (upper right-hand corner).

On the next screen, click on "view activity"

It will take you to this next screen where you can see members ratings and reviews, if they posted any.

Seven Percent Solution
Cool Text: Logo and Graphics Generator

SOME CHANGES and an EXAMPLE:

The letters “N.B.R.C.” have been added to Category #5.

md, from Cerulean (AKA “Hobbit Blue”) provided this example, which I tweaked a bit to include an example of a series name and to include the newly added letters.
You're not allowed to reuse a letter and since “N.B.R.C.   T.O.W.E.R.   T.E.A.M.S.   R.E.A.D.I.N.G.   C.H.A.L.L.E.N.G.E.” only has two letter 'T's in it that's all your allowed to have. We couldn’t read 7 books that qualified for the letter 'T,' we'd have to pick another letter.

For example:

B - The Bridgertons #4 - Romancing Mister Bridgerton

T - The Da Vinci Code
O - The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje
W - Where'd You Go, Bernadette

T - Tom's Midnight Garden
E - Everything is Illuminated
M - Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

We've completed challenge #5 because we've read 7 books (and used 7 letters).

If we wanted to do this challenge again instead of doing one of the others (say #4) we can do so; but, we can only choose from the letters we haven't used already.

In this example it would be: “N.R.C   E.R.   A.S.   R.E.A.D.I.N.G.   C.H.A.L.L.E.N.G.E.”

We're allowed to do it a 3rd time, but we would only be able to choose from the letters that are remaining.

The letter 'E' appears 5 times so that would mean there could be 5 books that qualify for that letter and the remaining 2 books would have to be another letter.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments OK I don't get why the extra letters had to be added. I just had people filling in what letters they were willing to read for the original spellout and figured that we would try to do 21 of the letters using a letter from each word only once.

Like this:

(I already understood that each letter could only be used the # of times it was in the spell-out and no more than that)

T-Lisa
o-Mary
w-Imke
e-Lisa
r-Teresa

T-Mary
e-Imke (ok there's 7 and one turn completed)
a-Mary
m-Lisa
s-Teresa
etc..,

(obviously not exactly in that order just as 7 books from the entire spell out were completed then a turn would be done until we had completed 3 turns and used 21 of the letters).

So now the change has me confused.

The extra letter, N.B.R.C. are just to give your more options. That is all. Some people wanted to try for 21 and actually have it spell something that made sense: "N.B.R.C.   T.O.W.E.R.   T.E.A.M.S.   R.E.A.D.I.N.G."

But you don't have to do that. You can choose any letter. You can not repeat a letter, unless it is repeated. Therefore:
You may read three "N" books.

You may read three "R" books.

You may read two "C" books.

You may read five "E" books.

You may read two "L" books.

You may read three "A" books.
EXAMPLE
Let's say everyone on your Team wanted to read Ecstasy Unveiled (Demonica, #4) by Larissa Ione .

If your Team is only going to do this category once, you could do so, using the letter "E" five times from the title Ecstasy Unveiled.

Since it is written by Larissa Ione and two more people could read it and use the "L" twice. There are two available.

Poof! You're done.

If you were attempting to complete this category for 14 books, it is from the Demonica series, so another person could read it and use it for "D." But it can only be used once for "D" - as there is only one "D" available.

But you could use the "I" from the author's last name.

Got it?

message 115: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Well that's how I understood it to begin with. So really nothing changed but adding 4 other letter options. Unless I had it wrong the first time and now it's been changed to what I thought it was to begin with.

Moderators of NBRC | 33496 comments Mod
No, you got it, Mrs. Dresden. N.B.R.C. was suggested by someone who was sharp enough to figure out that leaving off C.H.A.L.L.E.G.E. and adding N.B.R.C. would read better for exactly 21 books used.

I was going to remove it, to make it make sense to those who were confused by there being 26 letters. However, I just decided to use md's excellent example and add N.B.R.C. for those who were OCD and wanted it to say something.

Isn't it fun to communicate via the Internet?

Q15. "Just a clarification on Cat#6: Can I read more that one book with say a flower on the cover or is it only one book of each sub category?"

A15. You may read a flower bookcover, a green bookcover, a moon bookcover, a landmark/monument bookcover, any of the letters provided, etc. You can even repeat any of those 'sub-categories' as many times as you desire to reach 7 or 14 books.

Q16. "What if I, as Captain, notice that one of my non-participating members has read a book that is on another team member's bookshelf. Since I did the spying and not them, can I still list it?

A16. Certainly. Just keep track of who and which Team.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Oh good. I thought the team as a whole could only read 1 flower book, 1 moon book etc.., (well 2 if we did that challenge twice). Good to know we can do more.

Thanks -- I hadn't seen the buddy-reads guide before. I agree that discussion questions help to stimulate the conversation. I get really irritated in some other groups when all we have is a bunch of people saying --- I liked it. Me too. and then Me Three :-D

Ezin, GRs is experiencing a glitch this week-end with regards to looking up certain books.

A "work around" is to go to the book's Home Page and copy the ISBN # or ASIN #, in this case 1416914293. Paste that into the look-up.

City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2) by Cassandra Clare

If you don't want to use a spreadsheet for this, a helpful way for members to post what they have is:

Summer Knight (The Dresden Files, #4) by Jim Butcher Summer Knight, by Jim Butcher The Dresden Files #4
Fits/How:
#1. BEL - Cathy Galloway, Team B'dazzled Blue
#5. Letter "B" "S" "D" for author, title, series' name
#7. Seven words in title & series. Also in author's last name.
#7. S.E.V.E.N. U.P. - "S" for title

The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray  The Diviners, by Libba Bray
Fits/How:
#1. Elle, Magenta Mix-up
#4. BOM
#5. Letter "B" "D" for title, author

Sorry, I don't know who to credit for this lay-out. Maybe Jex was the first?

Some people also tag their “to-reads” with their selected “TT”* shelf in advance.

The safest way to select a book is looking from the
Google “Team Assignments” Spreadsheet.

*“TT” = Tower Teams

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments For Behind Enemy Lines, does it have to be read after the one posted by the other team?

For example(from my team so wouldn't really count, but the idea is there), I read Hip Check and so did Tea when I look at her list later, but she read it after I did. Does it still count?

Yes. You have to read it after the "enemy" does. However, if they finish it June 4th, and you finished on June 4th too, we'll take that.

Also, it must be posted on their shelf after April 12th...onward.

Unless...

the Team Captain is using a "blinkie" cupcake.

When selecting books for Category #1 "Behind Enemy Lines," it is safest to go from the Team Assignment Spreadsheet "view shelves."

It will show you their approved books via bookcovers. For example, Teresa's looks like this:

Aqua high-lighting means "private." However, if you see someone else has used that book, and you want to use it too, just as a Mod to verify it is is on their shelf.

Due to the difficulty of finding mauve, lime, tangerine (orange), and bronze, we will allow those colors to appear in titles. Or where the color "pops."

Acceptable Examples: (color respective to above order)
Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1) by Kami Garcia Beautiful Redemption (Caster Chronicles, #4) by Kami Garcia One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey The Diviners by Libba Bray

When July 1st comes, members may begin using additional colors, if you have any change in who is ahead or behind you on the last Sunday Update in June. You may continue using the old colors, too.
