I started Skulduggery Pleasant yesterday. It was one of the nominations for our Young Adult theme that really grabbed my attention. The humor is dry & hilarious! I find myself laughing all the time. I'm listening to the audiobook and the narrator does an amazing job NAILING the humor & tones! I'm about half way done & I'd already recommend it to anyone!

Kristine (knanihughes) I'm reading Pure Blood by Caitlin Kittredge. It's #2 in the Nocturne City series. I liked the first one so I went on to the second one. Can't help but like the bad girl werewolf and all the mystery..... and of course a little bit of romance.

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 77 comments Just finished YA fantasy THE SAFE-KEEPER'S SECRET by Sharon Shinn. It was a simple yet original tale with an unexpected twist. A beautifully warm and well-written tale.

Oooh - I want to read Thorn Queen - I thought it didn't come out until the 13th though?

I might have to take a look at the 1st book before I read it, I don't remember as much as I'd like too.

Shannon (theholyterror) | 132 comments Started both One Foot in the Grave (Night Huntress, #2) by Jeaniene Frost and Poison Sleep (Marla Mason, #2) by T.A. Pratt last night. Poison Sleep is holding my interest more though.

message 208: by [deleted user] (new)

Shanon - Thorn Queen came out on 7/28. I finished it up today and it was awesome! Better than the first. I didn't remember much about the first one, but once I started reading, it came back really fast.

Lily (lilithesque) I love Sanderson. His writing is easy to read and fun. Currently just cracked "Warbreaker" by Sanderson. It is good. ( I posted earlier that I wanted to read this, but I forgot that this is the first book, Mistborn---which I read already. I thought you were referring to the third book in the series, which I havent read yet and am looking forward to. Anyway, scrambled brain here.

Shanon wrote: "I'm reading Mistborn The Final Empire - well listening to it anyway & my iPod just died with only 2 tracks left so now I'm tied to my computer by the ears until I finish!"

Warbreaker

You'll have to let me know how you like Warbreaker Lily! I liked Mistborn (#1) and am planning on reading the other 2 in the series soon.

Shannon - Graveyard is a good book! I hope you enjoy it

Lily (lilithesque) Finished Santa Olivia. I really liked it. More than I thought I would. It did what sci fi or alternate reality fiction should. Said something about todays current events, in a fun wonderful and gripping story. Loved the charicters, the premise, and the flow of the story.

Carey stays in my list of great authors.

Still working on Warbreaker. It is good. Color is the magical manifastation and breaths are the vehicle. Wierd cool world.

Shannon (theholyterror) | 132 comments I'm reading Some Girls Bite A Chicagoland Vampires Novel by Chloe Neill now and it's a lot of fun. I like how all the vampires belong to Houses - reminiscent of Kindred: The Embraced. I also really like the dynamic between Ethan and Merit and I'm excited to see how it plays out.

message 222: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Ray (jenifirefly) Succubus Heat (Georgina Kincaid, #4) by Richelle Mead I just finished reading this book, it's the 4th in the series and I love it!!!! You would think by the title it was all about soft porn but it's not. There is definite depth and character to Georgina Kincaid. I fell in love with all the characters and this writer too, these books are like candy for me, pleasurable every minute of the experience and gone way to fast. Anyone else feel the same way?

message 223: by Jennifer (last edited Aug 14, 2009 06:33AM) (new)

Jennifer Ray (jenifirefly) I really loved this book too! I love what the author had to say about current events. Carey has always been one of my favorite authors, this was nothing like the Kushiel's Avatar series but was still really good it reminded me of Brave New World.

Shannon (theholyterror) | 132 comments I started Magic Lost, Trouble Found (Raine Benares, #1) by Lisa Shearin a couple days ago and I don't know if I'm just not in the mood for an elves and goblins fantasy book or if it's just boring. I'm gonna try hard to stick with it though. Anybody else read this series?

message 227: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 66 comments I started this one a while back and ended up shelving it for later. I think it was a mood thing for me as well. I definately lean more to Urban fantasty rather than the elves and goblins epic style fantasy. I do think the begining seemed slow. Like even the action sequences were kinda 'meh' but it looked like it could be good if I gave it a chance, so I did just set it aside for later.

I read this a few days ago, I also found it really hard to get into but it gets better about halfway through. I think the second book will be better.

I've just started [Book:Magic Study] by [Author:Maria V. Snyder].

message 230: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) I'm still reading Bad Moon Rising and having a WTF moment. Are the new Dark-Hunters in this book? The more "bad-ass" ones I've heard about? Anyway, I'm going to finish it even if it's weird at moments.

Ok, thanks, I'm definitely going to stick with it, although I'm probably going to finish Nice Girls Don't Have FangsNice Girls Don't Have Fangs first since it's a much quicker read than Magic Lost, Trouble Found.

Well, at least I'm not the only one that felt this way! I am going to try to finish it sometime this month though but I really hope the action picks up soon.

Susan - I keep meaning to start the Cassandra Palmer series. How are you enjoying them? Would you compare them to any other books/series?

message 235: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) Shanon, I'm probably not the best person to ask what I think of them. They are OK... I read the first 1 and was like not feeling it, but wanted to give the 2nd book a try cuz in most cases the first book of a series isn't always as good as the rest... so read book 2, it was a little better than book 1 and was likely not going to finish the series, BUT in the Who's your Author group, there is a string on Karen Chance and so many people always rave about Cassie & Pritkin and they all said that books 3 & 4 are the best, that I decided to give it another shot. So far I'm about 9 chapters in and altho it's not grabbing me by the face and screaming READ ME, it's not horrible ;) But I would suggest going and checking out the threads on Karen Chance in the Who's your Author group! :) And really I can't think of anything to compare it to that I have read to date..... it's fairly different from what I normally read, which is more vamps/weres vs. witches/mages/demons, etc.....

I thought it was ok. I think I hyped it up too much in my head.

Currently reading Seduced by Moonlight (Meredith Gentry, #3)

The Graveyard Book was AWESOME. I loved it and can't wait to see what they do with the movie.

I did finish it. While I was thrown by the whole demon thing, it turned out to be a good book. I enjoyed going "behind" the other books from the past and reading from Fangs point of view.
You are right though, it was hyped enough in my own head that while I was reading it, I was a bit eh about it. I still really liked it though!

I am now reading Odd Thomas and trying REALLY hard to get into it. It's funny and weird which is great but I'm distracted so I can't sit and read continually like I usually do. Hoping this weekend will change that.

I didn't know they were making a movie of it. I liked the book okay, but it came across to me as obviously a children's book. Maybe as a movie I wouldn't think that.

Lily (lilithesque) Me too!! I thought it is so shocking that this was read before the swine flu started in...da da da, Mexico, and folks started freaking out. I think this year its gunna be big. Interesting to see what unfolds.

Besides the social commentary, it was just a good story. And yesssssss, I loved Kushel books.

Lily (lilithesque) I started a new job (YEA) but my reading has really slowed down, or at least non work related reading. I read a couple chapters a night and just fall out. Currently reading [image error] and Ice Song by Kirsten Imani Kasai . Both are good. Ice Song is a new author, and Straight sci fi. Her writing is Lyrical. It is something different. As far as Dresden, well, yup, I still love him and his adventures.

message 243: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathry) Ice Song sounds interesting, I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

message 244: by Lily (new)

Lily (lilithesque) Its about a world where, maybe 15 years ago the population started spontaniously evolving into varous mutations of humanity/animals. There are some who didn't who are the at the top of the hiarchy. the protag evolved the ability to switch between genders. It is her and her childrens story at the center of a wierd tale. One may say it is a dystopian story. Closest story it reminds me of is Magic time. Anyway, what I like so far is her ability to write in pictures. Use her words in a pretty way, even when discribing uglyness.

Thankfully I own the book so I will only stop reading for a bit then pick it back up again. I received 8 books from the library recently along with 5 more on the way so I have my hands full with those.
I'm almost done with Gil's All Fright Diner and will likely start Uglies tonight.

I finished it last night...it was pretty funny. Just the whole concept of it - a werewolf and vamp (overall wearing, beer drinkin') hanging out together fighting off evil. It cracked me up and creeped me out all at the same time!

I'm now reading Uglies and liking it so far...although I'm not very far into it. lol
