I am reading The Fallen by Thomas Sniegoski. The first two chapter have been intriguing and I'm looking forward to the rest of the book. I have stalled at this point because I have been too busy to read...but hopefully will be back on track soon!

message 956: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I finished Carpe Jugulum and liked it. I didn't really want to read about vampires in a book with Granny, Nanny, Magrat, and Agnes in it. I knew there would be some harm done before the book was over. I love those witches! I have started Maskerade.

message 961: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I finished Maskerade. I've stopped reading Gale Force andUnknown for now. I've started Touching Darkness and continue to read Wormwood. There are a lot of books named Wormwood. That surprised me.

I received a copy of Mockingjay, but I don't feel like reading yet.

message 962: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Ok, so I was doing a reading marathon this weekend that's why I went a little crazy. I finished Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep , Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires, #1) by Chloe Neill , Pride Mates (Shifters Unbound, #1) by Jennifer Ashley , The Time Weaver (Drakon, #5) by Shana Abé , Wicked Game by Jeri Smith-Ready . Lily (lilithesque) Reading Feed (Newsflesh, #1) by Mira Grant . It's really very good. Zombie dystopian. Yum! By the same author as Rosemary and Rue, but by a nother pen name.

message 964: by Lily (last edited Aug 30, 2010 08:59AM) (new)

Lily (lilithesque) Carolyn. Love some of your reading. Spider bite. Nice. That Ork series- I read the first and I think the second but lost steam. Pretty good though. Also, been waiting for my library to get the Jennifer ashley book, Pridemates I believe. How was it? Oh, and i saw you read Naked Dragon (Works Like Magick, #1) by Annette Blair . I couldn't finish that book. It was some of the most cheesy sex talk I have ever read. I stated i would throw the book if the author said man lance one more time. I dont think I got through another page before the overused term was used again. I raved about this on on B&N paranormal blogs a bit.

Anyway, Im raving again. Sorry.

I didn't realize that was the same author. I had Feed from the library but ended up having to turn it back in because I never got to it and someone else requested it. Is it pretty graphic?

Loved the Pride Mates's book. I HATED Naked Dragon, the heroine was so irritating and condescending! Love the Queen of the Orcs series and just found out the next book is waiting for me at the library. And Spider's Bite was really good. This weekend I read a lot of good books except for one, which is a little unusual.

message 967: by Lily (last edited Aug 30, 2010 10:19AM) (new)

Lily (lilithesque) Not so far. The gore factor may come up, but really the interesting thing is the way zombie remade the world. What the fundimentalists look like. Right now, where I am reading, Georia and her brother are following a presidential campaign, and zombies have been used as an attack tactic. I didnt really think the book was disturbing, but last night I dreamed of living in a semi-zombie-safe zone and the concerns I had with the perimeter being secured. I guess the book got to me more than I thought. The point I am making is this book doesnt (so far) focus on the gore as much as the tension of living in a zombie-infested world and the way it affected laws, and even worldview and the political landscape, media and even post-infection biology.

So far I am really impressed.

Robert | 2 comments I've got my eye on quite a few including Moon Called as well as the Sookie series by Charlaine Harris. But I'm also on the lookout for some good and obscure vamp/were books. Any suggestions?

Julia | 119 comments Good and obscure vampire and werewolf books:

* Charles de Lint Wolf Moon and check out the Newford short story "Trading Hearts at the Half Kaffee Cafe."

* Vampire Junction by S.P. Somtow who also has written some werewolf books...

* A lot of people have never heard of
Chelsea Quinn Yarbro and her Saint Germaine series. He's a 4,000 year old vampire and the books about him are as much historical fiction as horror. These are some of my favorites. These books can be read in any order. Hotel Transylvania, Dark of the Sun: A Novel of Saint-Germain and Out of the House of Life.

Lily (lilithesque) Jax wrote: "Thanks! The protagonist is really turning me off so far..."

Slight spoiler......(Regarding Sunshine)
When I read it, it was such very refreshing to read a book where the vamps are yucky and scary and the protag vamp is physically unattractive (mostly). I guess you could say I read a lot of books with supersexy, magnetic vamps, so was so nice to have vamps unattractive, at least on the surface. I just loved it. The other piece I loved was the way the protags power was through sunbathing. I just really enjoyed the worldbuilding and juxtiposition of vamp and sunpowered.

Bonnie | 2 comments I found Moon Called to be a pretty decent book. I felt like it ended in a less exciting way than I would have imagined but the overall story was pretty good. As for the Fever series, they have to be some of the most engaging boos I've ever read. I pre-ordered the 5th book, Shadowfever! I'm so excited!

Carolyn F. I finished A Date with the Other Side (Cuttersville, #1) by Erin McCarthy and am now reading Eve of Darkness (Marked, Book 1) by S.J. Day .

message 988: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I'm now reading The Magician. The reading is going a little slowly. I think that there's a bit too much rehashing of the previous book. My favorite character is Scatty which is strange 'cause I don't like vampires as a general rule. Scatty isn't the blood sucking kind and she is sweet and loyal to her friends. She's also called The Warrior and does the name proud.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I've got the first book in that series but havn't read it yet.

I'm going to be starting the Glass series by Maria Snyder soon (in keeping with our theme/genre here), but what I'm currently reading at the moment is The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.

Storm Glass (Glass, #1) by Maria V. Snyder Sea Glass (Glass, #2) by Maria V. Snyder Spy Glass (Glass, #3) by Maria V. Snyder

message 991: by Ruby (new)

Ruby Hollyberry | 8 comments Just read Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1) by Seanan McGuire and enjoyed it though plot is apparently not the author's strength. I want to read the next two but if the plotting gets any worse it may discourage me. Had a few problems with Night Myst (Indigo Court, #1) by Yasmine Galenorn that I read recently - but it was almost all in the beginning. By the end it had straightened out. Ought to be reading Passion Play (Erythandra Series, #1) by Beth Bernobich that I received from a Goodreads giveaway. Will get started on that soon. Waiting VERY impatiently for Magic at the Gate (Allie Beckstrom, #5) by Devon Monk to come out. Huge fan of Devon Monk, also the Kitty books, all Anita Blake especially after it gets sexier, and Robin McKinley's Sunshine. Another I can't wait for is Mastiff (Beka Cooper, #3) by Tamora Pierce . Someone mentioned Tamora Pierce - I have never read her before but picked up Terrier and Bloodhound and was absolutely blown away. I think I was put off before by the covers of her older books suggesting they were for eight-year-olds.

message 992: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I need to find out when Mastiff is going to be released to the public. I usually preorder the Tamora Pierece new books. Pierce's books are YA, but her writing is interesting enough to draw in some of the adult crowd, especially her more recent books. Becca must have matured and risen in the ranks of the dogs for the book to be called Mastiff.

Lily (lilithesque) Reading Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate . Its ok. I felt like I had read it before in my youth and thought my granddaughter would enjoy it so I am reading it aloud with her. She (12 yrs old) loves it. I am enjoying it through her.

Reading Spellwright by Blake Charlton . Started out pretty good, due to the original premise, but the book is loosing me. I am 3/4th through so I am going to try to finish it, but the magic system is getting too fuzzy and the action is boring me.

Also reading Hell Fire (Corine Solomon, #2) by Ann Aguirre . Now this I am loving. Almost done.

message 995: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I'm reading Bad to the Bone (WVMP Radio, #2) by Jeri Smith-Ready right now.

message 996: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) Lily, I was wondering if Ann Aguirre's Corine Solomon series was any good. I just bought Killbox and was considering buying Blue Diablo, but didn't know anything about it. Glad you like it, I'll have to give Aguirre's Solomom series a try.

message 997: by Lily (new)

Lily (lilithesque) Paula,

The series has mixed reviews, but I enjoy her style, and am enjoying this series. I am really looking forward to Killbox. I havent read that one yet, but Jax was who introduced me to Aguirre.

I'm about half way through Patient Zero. It's completely different from anything else I've read. There are zombies (in a fashion) but the story really revolves around terrorism and special ops unit that is trying to handle the situation. I'm enjoying it but don't know if it will inspire me to read more like it. One of those books that "it's nice to visit but I wouldn't want to stay" kinda thing.
