:-D It starts at a pretty dark point in the series, that's for sure. Dark and yet...hopefully funny.

I'm still debating whether or not I like Wattpad. The story, on the other hand, I LOVED! Woot! Can't wait for more. But will wait and see if I should get an account there. Like I need one more password to keep track of. :-P

I don't follow people on twitter if I don't know them or find their posts useful, even if they follow me. I just don't. Don't need the extra tweets that I really don't want to read.

I do have one twitter account that's locked down so you have to ask to follow me. I routinely deny people and organizations I don't know there. Yep, I'm a hermit. So sue me. Lol.

And that I will not do. I mostly follow anyone who follows me. But if they seem to be all promo or have no information about themselves or you have to request a follow...no.

Although if I do actually KNOW the person, I'll bend that rule. Am I following you, Jordan? I must be.

I don't get the people who post descriptions like...antisocial artist who will get in your face and make you THINK.

I don't auto-follow on Twitter. If I know them or people interact with me (and by interaction, I don't mean BUY MY BOOK marketing), then I follow. Otherwise...no. I'd run screaming from my feed if I didn't try force some sort of meaningfulness to it.

I would love to have tweetdeck at work, where I would use it most, but I'm not allowed to download anything (had to ask to have Firefox downloaded when IE wouldn't work to upload pictures to our website.) and I try not to use my laptop at home for the internet.

The smart phone I bought makes it much easier to keep up with Twitter, and with several accounts all at once, but even so, I've rarely been on lately. I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot, but I'm busy living my life, what can I say?

For readers, it can only be a good thing, right? Josh's standards are very high and he won't want to see his characters being felled by bad grammar, stray apostrophes and wandering plot lines.

message 185: by Anne (new)

Anne | 6816 comments I think it is a great idea and it will probably create more interest for Josh's books, which must be a important factor for doing it, I suppose, very creatively thought out I must say. And I agree with Hambel, Josh's standards will probably ensure that the end result will be enjoyable on all fronts.

I, for one, would have liked to hear the story from Kate's perspective, the scene where Adrien shows up at the house while she is moving out, is so exquisitely painful to read and so well written, I still get goose bumps thinking about it. I know that storyline probably won't fit in such an anthology, but still.. I have always been thankful that Josh didn't create Kate as a villain (that happens a little too often in m/m stories IMHO), but describes her as just what she is, a young woman who fell in love with the wrong guy. The same scene also was helpful for not seeing Jake as too much of a bad person either, just a confused man who didn't like himself very much and didn't know how to make things right, and thus created pain for himself and people he cared about.

Oh, that sounds like something I'd like to read, too. (I suspect I'll be saying that a lot over the next few months!) I don't see why it wouldn't fit in. Josh has said he'd like to see other POVs and it would still be Jake/Adrien.

I'd read that! I loved that scene, but I would like to know what she saw as she was leaving. Did she see the two of them (A&J) were meant to be together? Or is she wrapped up in her own loss too much to notice?

In the LJ comments someone said something about Scout and Mr. Tomkins, and I'm thinking it would be awesome if someone wrote a story from one of the animal's povs. Can you imagine the cat saying "Yep, they're at it again. Haven't left the bed all morning. How am I ever going to survive if someone doesn't feed me? Never mind the case Jake's supposed to be working on! I suspect it was John who stole that expensive jewel, but Jake's just not getting it! Why won't he listen to me? I tried to tell him it was John, but he just ignores me." Sigh. "But when Scout talks, he listens. Oiy. At least Adrien pays attention to me. There is that. Though right now... not so much. ugh!"

lol. It could be a lot like that series where the PI's dog tells the story and has a hand in solving the cases. I forget the author's name, but one of the titles is To Catch a Thief.

Throwing a little humor into the mix.

And now I need to reread that scene from A Dark Tide.

At that time, I don't think she would be able to see it, pain and grief are very self-absorbing emotions. Later on, perhaps... one would hope, not the least for her sake as well as for Jake's.
Life long bitternes and regret are very unbecoming.

I guess it's a testament to how strongly readers feel about these characters that there was such a powerful mix of reactions.

The thing is, I plan on paying the current going rate for a short story, so I would be expecting professional quality work. Also, if anyone knows to be respectful of the characters and the storyline, it would probably be me. Right? ;-D

I would hire an editor -- not something I would tackle on my own.

But I also see this is perilous territory for some. The SO had a strong and negative reaction to the idea, so...maybe it wasn't such a hot idea.

It's back to the drawing board.

It is seldom wrong to think things through, to look at the pros and cons before jumping into new ideas. Or, to be like a Norwegian, we are considered to be very spontaneous, after thinking closely about it first :)

message 196: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments I'm just not a fan fiction type of person. I want the original author or nobody at all. Always been that way. I was shocked (SHOCKED) when they carried on the Dune books after Frank Herbert had died, and other SF authors around that time.

I would support it if Josh put it out, but I wouldn't go looking for it.

message 197: by Karen (new)

It seems I'm kind of in the minority, but I'm not particularly interested in AE fan fiction. I love the Christmas coda(s) or the possibility of Adrien and Jake interacting with Kit and J.X. in a novel or novella. But mostly I feel like Josh told their story beautifully and I'm interested in his addenda, not someone else's. The fan fiction I've been interested in fulfilled my imagined m/m subtext, where there wasn't one or it wasn't overt in the original, or created a viable HEA/HFN where there wasn't one.

But I would enjoy seeing more fan art, maybe selected work could be on a webpage with some means for readers to order prints, so the artists and Josh received some renumeration?

message 198: by HJ (last edited Jun 03, 2013 12:06PM) (new)

HJ | 3603 comments I've thought about it, and I've decided I'm not keen. I love the characters, but I like Josh's writing more, and I don't think I'd necessarily like stories merely because they were about Adrien and Jake. I'd rather wait until Josh has the time and inclination to write more.

For what it's worth, I do read fan fiction and enjoy it, although mostly it's derived from TV series or films. I suspect that's the difference - there is no pre-existing writing style which is either being imitated or deliberately ignored; the characters have to be true to the personas created in the original but that's not much of a constraint, especially in AUs.

I've just been thinking which fan fiction I've read based on books, and all the books are decades old. I enjoy some but not others, and the ones I've liked tended to be pretty faithful to the original writing style. I like it occasionally because there's no chance of any more books being written about characters whom I love. But I think overall I prefer fan fiction which is not based on books, and definitely not on current books.

All that is written from a reader's point of view. As an observer I'm quite surprised that Josh is prepared as the author to sanction others writing using his characters. I hear all you say about quality, Josh, but even if it's very good I think it would affect and dilute your characters and have an adverse effect on the reputation of the books themselves. I wouldn't advise it!

ETA Sorry this sounds so negative! And perhaps ungrateful to Josh, which is not my intent.

You guys bring up some good points about fan art not being limited and about continuations of series by other authors. I'm never a fan of that practice myself. Unless the series is unfinished and the author left substantial notes to work from and had someone he'd told he trusted with the task of finishing it should that be required. But even then, it's probably not going to be the same.

I also prefer writing and reading fanfic from TV shows more than books probably for the same reason that there is no authorial voice to try to copy. Characterizations are the easy part. Lol.

Fanfic should probably be written only for fun and the love of the original work. Now that I really think about it, it seems to be weird to get paid for writing fanfic. I mean, sure, getting paid for it would be awesome, but it doesn't seem right somehow. I don't know.

But maybe if it was available for free online people could choose to read the good with the bad, one or the other, or neither. I'll admit, I might be curious and check it out, but wouldn't write any myself.

message 200: by Anne (new)

Anne | 6816 comments I really don't see how this could be so problematic, but then I had hardly heard about fan-fiction before stumbling onto the Goodreads site a couple of years ago, so I have no emotional connotations tied to that concept at all.

For me it sounds like Josh's idea is more like a tribute, like rock stars sometimes do to other rock stars they admire. If it is after his wish, there are parameters in place that ensures the work being published is of good quality so it doesn't detract from Josh's own work and the people writing or admitting art work get good advice and editing so they might learn something from it, and also get paid, well, I don't see the problem. For me it sounds like a creative idea, nothing more. But since it is a problem for many and maybe even feels hurtful to some, it is a good idea to think it through of course.

It is definitely not in Josh's interest to antagonise his fans, I wouldn't think.
