Thank you very much! I had missed this.
And thanks to Josh for the lovely story.

Sorry to hear that you had two rough days because of the second shot, dear Josh!
I was just going to post that, Antonella! Lol.
That does make me a bit nervous because I’m getting my second Moderna at the start of June. But I planned it for a three day weekend, so if I do feel like garbage at least I won’t be working and I can stay in bed and watch tv or something.

oh wow! I missed this earlier. HUGS. That's a total nightmare!
Our vet left the vet's office for no apparent reason. We saw her one week, and the following week I got an email that she'd left. Don't now why. And the office didn't ask or contact us to switch to someone else in the office, which I feel weird about. I mean, our yearly appointment isn't until late fall, but still. I don't think I want to wait until then to be sure we have a vet.
That said, I literally live down the street from the animal hospital that's open 24 hours. I LOVE that fact about this neighborhood. In fact, just a couple of months ago, I was renting a car at 9pm on a Sunday to take Adrien there because she was having dizzy spells and falling. We had to wait until 12:30am to see a vet, but we did see one! They gave her condition a long name I've since forgotten and said she'd eventually get over it and she did. Thankfully. But yeah, if we didn't have them within walking distance (as I don't own a car) I don't know what I'd do.

It's really frightening when anything goes wrong with the dogs because they can't communicate. And I could tell Marlowe was frightened too. He kept trying to run away with his little tail between his legs. :-( It was awful.

What a terrible experience for all people involved. Hugs from me, dear Josh!
Thank you for telling us, Sam!
I'll try again to get notifications from Josh's blog. Now and then they just stop coming...

That was truly awful. I’m in awe how well you operated in a terrible crisis like that, dear Josh. How you were the ONLY one who was so organized.

Thank you Sam, Antonella, Johanna and Jordan. It was...surreal.
And it feels more surreal now. But thankfully, it's no longer my first thought in the morning or if I wake up in the night. Also, having to keep the windows closed for the air conditioning means I could no longer hear that poor woman screaming and crying--which went on for several days (and I'm sure will go on forever in her heart).
One of the strangest things in hindsight was that I never tried to get the SO. He was up front watering the whole time. He heard all the yelling, but thought it was the neighbors fighting as usual. He thought I was upstairs working. I mean, part of why I didn't try to get him was there was no time. I was on the phone and trying to deal with what was right in front of me. But I think it bothered him a lot that I didn't call for him. It honestly never once entered my mind.
Which in hindsight does maybe seem odd.

I don't think that seems odd at all. You literally didn't have any time and you HAD to be focused to handle that situation. HUGS.

I still can't tell whether my blog posts are posting, so here's my comment:
"I don't know how we got to a place (well I have some conjectures... social media et al) where writers are expected to produce produce produce regardless of how their lives are going. I remember waiting (and waiting) with my daughters for the next Philip Pullman book to come out, but it never occurred to us to become irate with the author. Quality over quantity or speed. Your books are always high quality and worth the wait."

I think a lot of it has to do with self-publishing and the fact that there are authors who see it as their mission to write and publish one book every month or every other month. Once you get enough people like that, then it starts to become the norm.
Though I do think it also depends on the genre too. You're not going to find high fantasy authors churning out stuff like that as often, at least not that I've found. Romance is a genre a lot of folks think they can just churn out really easily and quickly, regardless of whether or not it's any good. There are also a lot of readers who do not take romance seriously, and maybe there are authors who do that too, specifically those who churn out one every month. How do they even do that?! It must be an ease of grabbing a trope or two, name some characters and you're good to go. I've never been able to work like that, but I guess there are those who can.

A bit from the first chapter of Fatal Shadows, written from Jake's POV. This alternate first chapter is one of the bonuses in the Fatal Shadows Collector's Edition, which I'm hoping to finally, FINALLY have out in late January.

A coda written for Christmas 2021 with masks and all!
Or more to be more specific, an excerpt/teaser of a long coda in the Fatal Shadows 20th Anniversary edition. :) I ordered my copy today. Can hardly wait.

I also think that’s the important part. Slowing down is sometimes good. We live in such an ‘instant’ society and place ourselves under so much pressure because of this.
I usually handwrite my initial notes, but I recently started handwriting my stories too, and that's been really refreshing. I've got a rough draft done. I don't know when I'll get it typed and edited for posting, but I had more fun writing it than I have in a long time I think.

I used to write everything long hand. Then, after I learned to write directly to the laptop, I used to print everything out and do the edits by hand. Now I do everything directly on the laptop, and I do feel like something is lost in the process.
In fact, sometimes if I'm feeling too disconnected from the story, I'll write a scene long hand, and that does bring a certain immediacy to the storytelling--although I'm not sure why. Supposedly long hand triggers a different part of the creative brain?
I don't know *how* it works, but it does seem to work.

I loved this post! So interesting to hear from these two amazing artists (good translation is definitely an art). I'm one of the readers who buys these charming books just for their charm and those lovely illustrations.
P.S. I just ordered YOOICHI KADONO Sketches:門野葉一 スケッチ集 from Amazon JP.
