I just finished the book and I enjoyed it. It started off slow but grew into something good. The relationship dynamic was great. I noticed that Stephanie likes for everyone to have a happy ending. I would recommend the book to a friend. I hope she writes another book to this series because I am interested in how Wanda continues to adjust to the world and humans in her new body.

I just finished this book today and it was very slow at first but then after about 100 pages or so I couldn't put it down!! So many different emotions all wrapped in one had me crying. I absolutely loved this book!!!!
I finally finished it.... this book took way to long to read! It wasn't terrible, but I wish that so much of the over-detailing was not left in. The book would have been just as interesting if it lost about 300 pages...
I loved the movie it was awesome. I just started the book. Its a little cofusing at first, but I hope it gets better by the page
I started this just yeasterday and I have to agree that it is veery confusing at first. But as much as I've heard and seen it seems really good :)
I have to say I was very dubious about this as I despised Meyer's depiction of vampires in Twilight, and her whole abstinence message caused the bile to rise in my throat. However after 30 minutes trolling my local used book store searching in vain for a title from my "read" list I came across this book for $5 and thought I'd give it a shot.Of course Meyer's had to get her little abstinence message in there around page 70 which caused much eye rolling, and I almost boycotted the experiment. Yet after a coffee I continued reading and with just a few chapters to got I have to say it entertained me for a few days at least.
I loved this book! I couldn't put it down once I got really into the characters and plot and understood what was going on. The story really captured me and I definitely recommend it. Can't wait to see the movie!
This is a Great book! You must push threw the first couple chapters, but it's worth it! also I enjoyed it much more than the Twilight Series!

While reading this book there were times I did not think it was good, but in the end I loved this book and recommended it to many of my friends. I thought it would make a great movie. Not sure about a sequal, but she is a talented writer so will read it when it comes out.

The book is WAY better than the movie :) You schould read it. I thought that the movie was disappointing compared to the book :) they left out too much. But I really think you schould read it :)

THANK U FOR SAYING THAT
I MAY CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT IT AND READ IT :)

I couldn't read more first couple of pages. It just not catch me at all. So I share you opinion
maybe later i would give a go again. but for now the book was no no for me.
As for the movie. It was good. Now that i think about it may be its just one of those books that make a better movie...for as you said its starts out slow, and that was quite clear in the movie.
I read this book quite a while ago and recently went to watch the movie. I the movie was better than I expected it to be. For me I found the first half of the book confusing and couldn't follow along with interest very well. But more so near the end it really picked up and that made up for the beginning of the book and I ended up really enjoying it.
Unfortunately, for me I still haven't read the book. Im hoping I could read it sometime soon though.. But I've watched the movie and its actually good and I love it.
I don't care for science fiction and this book was no exception. It also had a dystopic theme that I found disagreeable. These are both matters of reading taste. The incidents of violence against women within this book was despicable.
Like many of you I almost didn't read this one because of the Twilight series, glad I did though.I really enjoyed this one because it was done from the point of view of one the invading aliens. In most books we just see the aliens as the enemy, in this one we got to know them. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.
I never read any twilight books and don't plan to but I really enjoyed The Host! This was my first book involving aliens and it was intriguing. I brought it with me on vaca and had a hard time putting it down. Great story and I can't wait to see the movie.
MILD SPOILERS I kept looking at the Wanderer-Wanda/Melanie personalities through an actor's eye (as a former theater major in college). I sometimes do this with truly unique, developed characters. What a fascinating and amazing role they would be (and I've, unfortunately, heard the movie is HORRIBLE). To take a human host, learn a new culture, and fight with the inner voice of the person whose body you now inhabit, constantly fighting, trying to be your own personality, the frustration of someone else throwing their memories at you, eventually an unlikely friendship... WOW! Two different ways of thinking, moving, reacting… Strong emotions are new to Wanderer as well, so her discovery of them is also an intriguing nuance. How can you figure out what emotion it is you are feeling when you’ve never had such experiences before? How can it be love when it hurts so much?
Meyer somehow gets to the heart and morality to the situation without making the reader feel uncomfortable. There's nothing political or intense "change the world" agendas thrown at you. It’s about being human. At first you root for Melanie, but then you find yourself siding with Wanda too. Two opposite personalities trapped together not of their own doing with polar opposite ways of living.
-“It's not the face, but the expressions on it. It's not the voice, but what you say. It's not how you look in that body, but the thing you do with it. You are beautiful.” - Ian
Though the book was pretty thick I finished it in about 3 days, if I didn't have school I would have finished faster. I heard The Host is part of a trilogy, and I don't really know how I feel about that. I loved the first book and at the end I felt very satisfied and I don't really know if I would want to read another book.

Jodi wrote: "lily wrote: "Though the book was pretty thick I finished it in about 3 days, if I didn't have school I would have finished faster. I heard The Host is part of a trilogy, and I don't really know how..."No, I don't think she has released the other two books.
I've read it twice and I enjoyed it both times. A friend warned me that the first 100 pages would me really confusing so I decided to read them before quitting. And she was right just around page 100 I started to get really into the universe. It was better the 2nd time were I knew the universe from the beginning. The writing may not be excellent but the story is great and that's the most important thing
I really wanted to like this book, unfortunately, way to slow for me. I started being interested 200 pages later... I gotta say that seeing the movie afterwards was a good idea, it sucked so bad, you dont get attached to the characters in the movie and theres so many things they did wrong... But seeing the movie made me enjoy the book a little bit more. :)
I thought it was an awful book, and the film looks just as bad. Nothing really seemed to happen the whole way through the thing. Just felt like Twilight but with weird little aliens instead of 'vampires'.
I managed to finish it, but I didn't really enjoy it, personally.
Simply loved it. I don't even know what to say. Like others have said the start is slow, and a tiny bit confusing but you completely get sucked in. The characters are brilliant. The dialogue with Wanda and Melanie is intriguing. The emotions I felt reading this... *shakes head*. It's so worth a read if you haven't read it.
I only even considered reading this book because it was by Stephenie. When I began reading it wasn't really to my liking. I kept telling myself I MUST read the entire thing. It took me at least a week to read the first 9 chapters. I kept picking it up reading a few and putting it back down. Now let me tell you, after chapter 9, this book takes off!!!!! I finished the book in probably less than 24 hours!!! It was a great book. Great Story. It was different. Just all-round great read. This is a book I will read again.
I forced myself to read the book because the trailer looked so cool. The first I think 10 chapters I was bored out of my mind and almost didn't finish it but I pushed on. Once she reached her uncle and all the "survivors" I was hooked. It just got so good and the whole plot was amazing even the end couldn't have been more perfect. 2 weeks after I read the book I went out and saw the movie. UGH! Can I just say they ruined one of my favorite books? I mean I knew it was gonna suck compared to the book. I did not expect it to suck that bad. It's like they didn't even try :/ I still kind of enjoyed watching it though grudgingly. lol.
I'm torn about this book. The first time that I read it, I didn't like it very much. That was several years ago. After re-reading it a few times, I think it's interesting.
I finished the book earlier this week. I loved it! It was, in my opinion, much better than her other book Twilight. I found The Host very interesting
Like most people here, I was hesitant to read this because of Twilight. I didn't want to...shall we say, sully my reading reputation. But holy crap. I'm so glad I got over myself. It is an incredibly slow book, and could have been condensed without removing any major events or character building. The concept of the 'souls' entering a body reminds me of the YA series 'Animorphs' especially when the souls are referred to as bugs (yerks, in the Animorphs series). But I really like what Meyer did with this concept. There are so many things to look at: the ethics of the soul (which could relate to the many beliefs we have of what a soul is, and who has one), alien races, colonialism (is our way of life better than another's?), and so much more. To some extent, I think the length of the book was needed in order to show all of the depth potential. However, it wasn't necessary to go into the detail she did. I also wish that it would have ended with Wanda going to sleep. I thought it was a perfect ending to that story. Now knowing that there's to be more books, it makes sense that more about the humans was explained at the end, but I'm one of those people who doesn't need a book to have a happy ending to be a good ending.
I loved the book. I try to think of solid reasons why but there's so many reasons and not all of them fully expressable. For the most part, it was the setting (elements of dystopia and aliens) that did it for me plus the complex character mash up and for the most part, the character's reactions and dialogue were realistic. Ian was a huuuge plus. I know a lot of people have trouble getting past the beginning few chapters (like my mom who gave up and my friend who had to be told what the beginning basically was about before she skipped over to the caves and read on from there) and even when I reread the book, I tend to skip that part but really, past that point, the book is SO WORTH the boring beginning! Didn't get a chance to watch the movie yet :( I'm pretty sure I missed it in the theatres and the DVD comes out in June...
I both liked and didn't like "The Host." Honestly, I thought the writing was a bit weak and even boring at times. I really like the concept, but just like in the Twilight books, things work out a bit too easily in the end. I think it could have ended the exact same way written by a different writer and left a better taste in my mouth though.
I kinda liked the book.It was an interesting concept and , mostly, a very good execution. My problem was that I did not like Wanda most of the book. There were some brilliant moments, especially in the end, when she comes up with a plan to save the souls and her horror at discovering, that they were slaughtering baby souls. I hated her cowering and being beaten up every couple of pages...

I liked the book too, but it took me a long time before I started to care about Wanda (I was more interested in Melanie and Jeb's group). I also thought it was odd that (view spoiler)

I liked the story and look forward to the on screen depiction also. I almost gave up since the first third of the book seemed very drawn out, slow, sporatic, too detailed, although some of those details were needed later I must admit. Glad I didn't give up though because most of the remaining two-thirds of the story was very entertaining and exciting...couldn't. put it down.
I read bits and pieces of it. The overall concept was great, but it wasn't executed well, in my opinion at least. It was a bit boring to me....
I might have to have another go at this book. I have a rule that I will not read something that I am not enjoying and quit at page 150 but comments on here suggest that maybe I should have stuck with it a bit longer.

You could have a book that's only 200 pages long, or you have a book like this which is 600 pages long. In that case, 150 pages is not nearly enough to get the feel of the book. Definitely keep going with it. The writing isn't incredible, but the depth of the story is. It's not just a book about aliens, or a love story. There's so much more to it.
I just finished up with this book. In the middle of reading I ended up seeing the movie. I was enjoying the book and this world that Meyers created and so I finished the book. I'm really glad I did. I was disappointed in the movie that they did not touch on any of the other worlds that Wanda went to. I think it would have been great to see those worlds brought to life. I was not a fan of Meyer's writing in Twilight, but I found this book well written and I may be a fan of hers after all.
I absolutely loved this book, but did not care for the movie. I hope that the author decides to write a sequel.
