Debbie | 3 comments Took me to about chapter 7 to get into it, I kept on wanting to quit reading, yet so glad that I kept on reading loved the last few chapters. Can't wait to see the movie.

Staceyj | 91 comments Loved this book. I read it years ago when it first came out. I'm not to sure about the movie. The inner dialogue between Wanda and Melanie in my opinion isn't going to translate well in a movie.

message 104: by Mia (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mia | 2 comments I love this book! when I got it I couldn´t put it down. I´ve recommended it to almost everybody i know :)

Yassemin (yas666) | 56 comments I'm just over the 200 page mark now. Really enjoying it. At first I couldn't stand Wanderer but now I can see she actually has a personality / sense of humour, I really like her.

Charlotte (caelestial) | 33 comments I liked the book a lot more than Twilight, that's for sure. This was a really interesting read and although it was a bit confusing at first, it was really good and worth it. Definitely recommend it to people who are interested into the sci-fi and romance genres.

message 107: by Rianne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Rianne Heartfilia (glindaaaaaa) I find it hard to describe my feelings about this book. Actually the first like 150 pages were not my cup of tea. However after that I totally were interested. I wanted to know the ending.

Anne Rida wrote: "Kim wrote: "So I'm about 100 pages in and not overly impressed..."

Exactly, right?"

Yes. I am on pg 141, almost to the point where I gave up trying to read this last time. Its still not doing it for me. The thought of slogging on for another 479 pages at this pace is not pleasant. I hope it picks up soon.

message 109: by Sapphire (new)

Sapphire | 3 comments I read this book when it first came out an I LOVED it, which was very surprising to me (and frankly still is). My mom had me read the Twilight series before that to make sure it was "age-appropriate" for my little sister and I frankly wanted to run my head into a wall the whole time... so reading something by Meyer that not only kept me interested but didn't have me on a homicidal rampage was refreshing.

I'll have to see if its one that I kept around or one I gave away because I think I'd enjoy re-reading it.

Brittany Perry | 229 comments I thought it was okay, not as many mistakes as Twilight but I am not sure if anyone could call me a fan.

message 111: by Brie (new)

Brie Post | 4 comments I really liked this book I thought that the way it was written just seamed like it was a completely different author than twilight...I think that the concept is so crazy and strange that it actually works...I just went and saw the movie and although it was good I still love the book more...books always win

Tiffany so far I've only made it to chapter 19. I struggled through the first 6-7 and wasn't sure I was going to get "into" this book...I'm a little more interested now but some parts are SO frustrating
***possible spoiler ahead***

I can't stand how she's going on and on with what seems like hum-drum talk about wanderer being walked to and from the restroom. it just seems to keep going on!! I find myself "fast forwarding'' through a lot yet I really want to know when Jared is going to decide what he wants to do with her and I'm hoping he softens up SOON! ALSO-melanie got them in this situation and she seems to be mostly absent now!! I'm sure she will be more present as the book goes on but she is the reason why they're at the cave ;-)

a good book keeps you wanting to turn the pages and this book is definitely keeping me interested enough to want to keep going back to it, yet it is also making me crazy at the same time BC it gets boring :-\

message 113: by Lanie (new) - added it

Lanie Jordan (lanie_jordan) | 27 comments The book is really nothing like Twilight, so if anyone buys it thinking it might be, they could end up really disappointed.

I forgot about the writing style--at least with the different points of views (Melanie and Wanda's). That's one of the things I had some issues with. Don't necessarily think it was bad, just...different.

For now, until/if I read it again, I'm still saying I don't know what to think of it.

Chrystal (chrystal0830) Just started it so we will see how it goes. I really liked the twilight series. I'll let you know how it goes.

I enjoyed the book I thought it was really well written and entertaining I was really excited about seeing it come to life in the movies but after seeing it on the big screen.....let's just say I'm glad I read it first

message 119: by Daisy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Daisy (thedaisydeer) I'm not sure how eager I am to read this book. I didn't really like the twilight series, but this book is supposed to be better and the concept interests me. I have the book, and I've seen the film which I quite enjoyed actually, but I'm not sure if I have the patience to get through it. I might try after I'v finished my current book.

message 120: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne I'm on pg 279 and its finally getting better. The first 150 pages were a snooze.

message 121: by Wilri (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wilri (wilrimerwe) | 1 comments It started real slow for me, i started reading it once and left it but the second time pushed through the slow chapters and enjoyed it so much. I am now reading it again before i go and watch the movie, i hope it is as good as the book

Melissa The only problem I had with this book was I thought it could be about 100 pages shorter. However, after I read the entire book I liked the story. I really loved the idea of the different planets and how wanderer was so many different beings. That part was very interesting to me.

One conflict I had about Wanda was that the beings (sorry, cannot remember in the book what they were called - the centipedes :) had issues with how violent we humans are and our weapons and such yet they pretty much came to earth and took over humans whether we liked it or not. So who is the bully?

Tiffany Anne wrote: "I'm on pg 279 and its finally getting better. The first 150 pages were a snooze."

Thank goodness that i'm not the only who feels that way! I'm FINALLY past the boring parts too and getting into the story

message 124: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne On pg 353 now and fully into the story. No wonder I didn't finish it on the first try.

message 125: by Kim (last edited Apr 04, 2013 12:00PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kim I read this when it first came out. I liked the movie better than the book. Took all the slow parts out and brought the Cave and the Aliens to life beautifully. Plus unlike her other books, I liked the actors they picked to play her characters (I actually got emotion and feeling between the actors). Loved the concept just thought it made a better movie than a book.

message 126: by Ericka (new) - rated it 1 star

Ericka annamarie (annamarielebeau) i read this book a long while ago and just like twilight it's very well written and will probally be one of your favorite stories if you can get trough the many many pages of unnesscary details.

Laura Adler (stregagranger) | 1 comments I read the book when it came out. A friend of mine lent it to me and let's say that I couldn't put it down. Really liked in, and of course, I went to watch the movie last week, and completly liked it, more than the Twilight ones, truth to be told.

This gives me hope, because I'm watching a lot more Dr. Phil than reading since I started this book! ;) I just want something to happen already!!!

message 129: by Simone (new) - rated it 4 stars

Simone Francois (simonefrncs) | 9 comments I am currently on chapter 26 of the book and so far I am enjoying, but I thought it was going to have more tense moments than it does, but hopefully it will get better. I hope Wanda finds her place in the group. I wanted to read the book before seeing the film because I love knowing the book because movie's get condensed, and this is a big novel.

Lorelle | 2 comments I was given the book by a friend who said "the beginning was so boring and could not read the rest, here you can have it". I was not looking forward to attempting to read it with all the bad reviews I've heard. I am so glad I did, couldn't put the book down. Loved the very unique story and can't wait to see the movie this weekend.

message 134: by Neha (new) - rated it 4 stars

Neha (neha71580) | 29 comments I really love this book. The style of Stephenie's writing is totally unique. The Plot and the characters were amazing as well. This story has been told through the eyes of an alien herself(i mean eyes of the host she's wearing, whatever), and we can see through her perspective that how brutish humans can be when they totally want something they desire. I also like those romantic moments in between (afterall romance was one of the major themes of this book). I haven't seen the movie yet i'm gonna see in june (downside of Not being in US).

message 135: by Nayira (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nayira (nayimarie) One of my favorite books since 2009, re-read it this year, last month, and I enjoyed it even more!

I love each one of the characters so much, I know it might be weird but I'm not divided between Jared and Ian, I feel appreciation for both of them, same feeling with Melanie and Wanda. This relationship of "4" is the most appealing yet compelling story I've seen in a long time. Stephenie somehow always manages to trap you into a world that won't let you to stop reading.

Love, Life, Survival and Motherhood. The power of strong feelings.
Can't wait for the sequel.

If you like it, please add me! :)

message 136: by Kat (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kat I read this a few years ago when I was in my Twilight phase, but I want to read it again because I really enjoyed it the first time, and I want to be up to date for the film!

Tatyana (tyana1040) | 5 comments I read this book when it first came out. So it was awhile ago and I was very disappointed . It didn't grab my attention like twilight and it was pretty boring in my opinion. I guess I was expecting a better love story or more thriller action since it was publicized as an "adult" book.

message 138: by Mia (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mia | 49 comments I honestly have read this book 12 times and am reading it again before the movie. I love it. I can't wait for the movie, and the casting (although looks nothing like I imagined) still has potential to woo me:)

Respect! Thought it was a fantastic book as well. Can't say the actors look like what I imagined them to be either, but still looking forward to seeing the movie.

TheCuriousDeer | 7 comments Ooh, just noticed this discussion!

I absolutely love this book. I first read it years ago and I was unsure whether it would be that great. Don't get me wrong, I do like Twilight but it's definitely not a favourite of mine! Anyway, The Host really suprised me. I was hooked and I have since read it multiple times.

I am worried that the movie will ruin it for me, not sure if I'm going to take the plunge and watch it!

message 141: by Sarah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah I loved this book, I hadnt heard of it before it was leant to me so I had no expectations of it, it was one of those books that I didnt want it to end, for this reason only I am going to watch the film lol I know that I will moan about it afterwards, I know that it wont live up to the book but I feel like I cant not watch it lol I liked the hunger games but hated the film, I liked One Day but hated the film, I dont know why I cant just not watch the films but I cant resist, the only tv adaption that was true to the book was the call the midwife series, so much so that I thought I was watching a repeat! lol
Im just hoping that The Host will be an exception to the rule where good books are turned into bad films lol

message 142: by Bianca (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bianca (cannibalduck) | 5 comments I totally love this book I actually read it three times but never got a chance to watch the movie :(. Don't judge it if you haven't read it just because it's Stephenie Meyer's work.. It has an interesting love triangle and it's told from the alien's point of view. This book never fails to make me cry..

message 143: by Sarah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah | 3 comments I was skeptical at first & finally decided to read it this week. It took at least 16 chapters for me to get into it. I'm glad I pushed through. I really enjoyed it. I love Ian--his character was amazing. Honestly wasn't a huge fan of Jared throughout much of the story. I was very pleased with the ending.

message 144: by Teri (new) - rated it 4 stars

Teri (artsybookgeek) | 5 comments I gave this book 4 Stars. I was actually impressed with the growth the author had taken, compared to her earlier writings. It did take a good 120 pages, till you really got into the story. Being a sci-fi/fantasy fan, I really liked the different worlds Wanderer had traveled to & how she was searching for a place to really belong. Very interesting concepts and I really liked the development of trust & faith everyone had in one another.
I saw the movie as well & believed that those watching the movie without having read the book, would find it ridiculous & bland. Only the book filled in more of the inner monologue, back stories & stressed on the difficult lives that the Wanderer had achieved. Especially, since the reader gains knowledge of Wanderers true strength & integrity as a hero in her own species. You just do not see that translated as well onto the screen.
Books always seem better than the movies, because our imagination is unlimited. While in the movie, we are only viewing the book through the Directors eyes.

Jamie (Jamiesbookblog) | 6 comments Minor Spoilers possibly for those who haven't read the book.

One of my favorite books ever. I hate that some people who hate Twilight won't give this book a chance to stand on it's own. Saw the movie and while I liked it I think they failed to really capture so many things that were portrayed in the book. I'm not sure if a non book fan would really love the movie. If it weren't for all of the extra little things from the book I doubt I would have enjoyed it very much.

Definitely a book I read over and over again. A perfect book on humanity and I loved how there were no "bad guys" humans and souls are both good.....just different.

Actually I do kinda understand their reviews. If it weren't for the book and I'd just gone in and saw it with never reading the book I don't think I would have liked it very much. The acting was great but they just kinda failed to capture the complete awesomness of the book.

keep reading, I think that you'll change your mind on the host. The writing starts a bit slow and confused but I think she finds her pace about 100 pages in. If you can get past that I think you'll like it.
