The Host
I happened on this book last year. i absolutely loved it. At one point I was reading it with tears streaming down my face. I love Wanda and I thought it was a great concept. Very moving at some points. I agree it started off slow but once it got rolling...look out! i don't even think i want to see the movie. the movies are always disappointing. I just brought it on sale on my kindle so i will be reading it again. from the twilight series i only read "Breaking Dawn" because I did actully like the movies and could not wait to find out what was going to happen. So yes I admit it: I DID LIKE TWILIGHT!!!I know a lot of people seemed to have hated it but i stand by opinion. everyone have a good day Peace A
Nada wrote: "The Host is simply the most beautiful love story out there. It siriusly puts Twilight to shame ..."I don't know. It's a toss up for me between all of the books Meyer has wrote, but I think The Host get's the slight edge. It's just slightly more interesting.
I'm only a quarter of the way through and I haven't hit anything interesting yet. Matter of fact what the synopsis says is just beginning. Maybe I just like books that get right to it, but this one is dragging on for me. Hoping to finish it this week. I will wait till the movie comes out on rental and compare.

They really could have made the movie into two parts, and they wouldn't have had to cut so much out (or add things that didn't happen). I'm not too happy about the casting either...*sigh*. Oh well, at least we have the book still! :D

Brianne wrote: "I have tried to read this book but can't seem to get past chapter 3..when does it pick up?"At about the 100 / 150 page mark
This was the first book in the recent long line of books-turned-movies that convinced me not to watch books-turned movies any longer! The character emotions and intricate sub-plots don't carry through to the screen well AT ALL. This book was too good to go ruin the experience with a movie. That being said, this is WAY to similar to the Pretties series, which I believe had a much stronger plot and more detail.I spent this entire reading experience thinking, "didn't something similar happen in...". I'm not sure that this book wasn't after that series, but they are too similar to ignore it..

More like 200. or even 250.
just finished the book last night and I loved it!! thanks to everyone who encouraged me to keep reading BC I ended up loving the way it all played out
I have only read a sample so far - but I'm struggling to get into the book. The thought patterns are jumbled and hard to keep track off. I might not finish it- Anyone else have that problem?

If you can push yourself to read the first 1/3 to 1/2 That's when it starts to get good. I liked it a lot except for the painful beginning. A bunch of us felt that way.
I disliked Twilight but this book had always intrigued me. It was one of my first Kindle purchases a couple of years ago. I think it's fantastic. It has been reread and is still a solid favourite. Slightly disappointing film but not unexpected. The romance in this novel is one of the most heart warming ones I've read WITHOUT it taking over the whole book and drowning the sci fi aspect.I have recommend to lots of people. Cliche or not, I couldn't put it down.
I read this recently and really enjoyed it. It was perhaps a little slow at times, but I loved the different worlds created (even if they did seem a little "cheesy"). I also really enjoyed the fact that souls thought of humans as destructive creatures. Oh the irony.

Laura wrote: "This disscussion is about one of the books of the month: The Host"I really liked the book, thought it a very unique love story. The internal struggle between Wanda and Melanie was my favorite part of the book and how Melanie fought to keep her idenity and wouldn't let go. I too am surprised there is a sequel thought she ended it well but will read to see where she takes it from here.
The book has gotten better for me. I am enjoying the weird relationship dynamic of Ian, Wanda, Melanie, and Jared. I am hoping Wanda starts to form her own feelings and attachments toward people instead of letting Melanie's bias opinion guide her.

I enjoyed this much more than the Twilight series. Felt like Stephenie Meyer needed more editing though and noone dared tell her to change anything!Looking forward to seeing the film.
I'm not really a fan of Stephanie Meyer but just watching the trailer really got me so I thought, why not give it a shot? Glad I did. :)
I liked the Twilight series but I was a little disappointed with this book. I liked the idea of it but it just left me feeling like less than fulfilled. I still want to see the movie and see if it is better than the book.

I disagree, sorry. You may be right in that yeah the plot doesn't seem to take off properly until then but for me @ 100 pages / 150, that was when I actually started to want to read it, if you see what I mean. I was a bit reluctant before that.
I generally don't like books involving aliens but this book was amazing. much better than the twilight series by Meyer
SPOILERI just finished The Host about a week ago. It was a strange book that was on my mind (while not reading it) pretty consistently. It was difficult for me to get into it in the beginning, but after 100 pages or so I just wanted to keep reading to know what would happen next. I was a little sad when it finished, and I don't agree with the new host they chose for Wanda. Wanda didn't seem like a dainty girl to me, I felt her soul was stronger than that. I also thought there would be more on the humans getting their world back, but it was mostly a love story. I did enjoy it anyways though!
I wasn't a fan of Twilight, at all. Bella was a terrible character. So, is this worth reading? I kinda want to give it a shot, because it sounds so interesting. But I'm a little unsure.

I wasn't a fan of Stephenie Meyer's books--Twilight Saga, but then I tried to read The Host and do not kill me or feed me off to those giraffes in Africa;but I decided I don't like The Host either. I tried to read it, I really did, but I guess I just can't like it! There is something about the book that just irks me, I don't know what it is, but I just can't.
It was really boring and yes, it kicks in at like 200 pages or so but I can't do it, I can't like it. Not for me.
Ida wrote: "Evelyn wrote: "Kriti wrote: "Evelyn wrote: "I wasn't a fan of Twilight, at all. Bella was a terrible character. So, is this worth reading? I kinda want to give it a shot, because it sounds so inter..."I can definitely understand that. It's about 600 pages or so long, isn't it?
I really love this book :) it is truely amazing :)And I really love Ian & Wanda <3 they are so sweet :D
I liked this book - not in love with it - but enjoyed it. And I liked it better than any of Twilight -- I enjoyed the details on the souls and their outlook on humans.
I loved the book. It was very well written and honestly, a much better work that Twilight was. The characters were flawless, though, I ended up liking Wanda more than Melanie, because she was a bit annoying at times.I've seen the movie as well and loved the way they portrayed the characters from the book, especially Ian. :)
I'm starting the book already having seen the movie. I know the book will be better. They always are! It's hard to keep reading though. I'm moving through it really slowly.
This is my favorite of Meyer's books. It may have been slower to get into, but I thought the plot and imagery were much richer than in the Twilight series. I hope she writes more adult fiction.
This is my favourite book by Stephanie Meyer, and I love the plot and detail of the story; it's much better than the Twilight saga :)
I'm actually really enjoying The Host now.. I just wish it didn't take me 400 pages to get into it. I think this book could have been just as good without a lot of the random bs the first half presented.
oh goodness! there's going to be a sequel? I don't even know how she could make one! it ended so perfectly
i just finished reading this yesterday and i loved it although i wish the intro and conclusion were a little bit longer. i felt that all the information was crammed into the middle dragging it out. but i did love everything about the book. now that ive finished reading it i feel as though i have lost great friends(mel and wanda). :( sad.
Nathan wrote: "I've seen the trailer for the movie,I'll probably read the book instead. The books are always better."as soon as i see a movie preview for a book i know is going to be good, i read the book first, before i see the movie.
Kirsten wrote: "oh goodness! there's going to be a sequel? I don't even know how she could make one! it ended so perfectly"shes making a sequel? oh thank goodness, i didnt want the story to end so soon.

Was slow to begin with, but now I feel it was necessary to get us invested in the characters, give a bit of background and make us feel something.
I'm looking forward to the rest in the series and I LOVED Wanda!
