Jenny (jennyc89) | 116 comments So far this month I've read The Sandman, Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes, The Nameless City, Caliban's War, The Calorie Man, and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

I'm currently reading The Spear of Destiny and Shadow of the Hegemon. I've missed the Ender/Shadow universe.

message 202: by kvon (new)

kvon | 563 comments I read Glamour in Glass, which was a good high-estrogen story about marriage and war in the Napoleonic era. Book 2.

I have Stand on Zanzibar coming up next for my RL book club.

I'm about 2/3 through with Game Change, non-sf about the secret history of the 2008 primaries.

I tried to read 2312 but I couldn't get into it, beautiful setting (the whole freaking solar system) but characters and plot left me cold. I bet you'd like it if you liked his Red Mars.

message 203: by Sara (new)

Sara (medusasmirror) | 44 comments I'm obsessed with the Aunt Dimity's Death series at the moment, which has a ghost, so it's technically in genre.
I also just finished Ink, which was pretty good.

It's not something I would normally read but doing it as a buddy read. I'm not sure what it's about exactly but I suspect it contains baboon porn.

message 205: by Doug (new)

Doug Hoffman (dshoffman) | 62 comments Currently reading Andrew Vacchs' Flood, rereading A Confederacy of Dunces, and starting The Phantom Tollbooth.

Looking forward to your thoughts on this one. I thought it was great!

message 207: by Camilla (new)

Camilla Hansen (malazanshadowdancer) | 64 comments Just finished Luke Banderloft and The McFarven Pirates, which made me happy. Pirates!

I'm still on The Alienist and Toll the Hounds.

I might consider something I've had on my kindle for ages... Like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

message 208: by David(LA,CA) (new)

David(LA,CA) (davidscharf) | 327 comments Summer Knight finished. Good, but I liked Grave Peril better. Starting Death Masks tonight, and will be starting on the audio version of Dragonflight tomorrow. I feel I have to give a few more audio books a try before deciding I don't have the attention span to listen and do other things at the same time.

I think it may include mating habits of baboons, but there's at least one person I know who's taking tips. Yeah, you know who you are.

Kristina | 588 comments Finished The Rook-really fun read. I liked it quite a bit. Have a hold on the book of Dragonflight, but I'm 3rd on the list... Going to start Year Zero while I wait.

Did you start MOI yet? I have a few others I'm trying to get in before I start.

The only Brunner I've read was The Compleat Traveller in Black, which was a gem of a book. I should pick up more of his stuff one of these days.

Dont knock it. There is much to be learned from these guys.

Lee (kiwifirst) @ David, the LA Ca one.

Summer Knight finished. Good, but I liked Grave Peril better.

I agree with you 100%. But from here on in, it gets freakin awesome!

Good Omens. It's alright, although not really my type of book.

I finished up my audio "re-read" of Wolves of the Calla. Feel free to check out my review

I'm taking a break from Dark Tower and reading 11/22/63 as I'll be taking a road trip this weekend and can put a serious dent in it.

You know get away from Stephen King by reading Stephen King..oh wait.

message 221: by Molly (new)

Molly | 9 comments I just finished Soulless, the first Parasol Protectorate book. I'd downloaded it on my kindle a while ago, but never got around to reading it. But hearing Veronica, and some of this board, rave about it, I decided to take the plunge. Despite the fact that I'm really kind of tired of whole vampire, werewolf, etc. genre, I did enjoy this one. I'm a sucker for things set in 18th/19th century Britain.

On a totally different front, I'm also in the middle of Blindsight by Peter Waitt. Reading it made me realize it's been a while since I've read any science fiction-- I was initially a science fiction reader, but in recent years have drifted more toward fantasy (and non-genre stuff). I find the world and concepts in the book interesting/intriguing. But I also haven't found myself totally compelled by the book, and keep putting it down to read something else. I'm about 1/2 way done and not sure if I'll finish it. Has anyone read this and do think I should persevere, or if I don't love it by now, maybe it wasn't meant to be?

message 222: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome | 7218 comments S&L read it. :)

D S wrote: "I enjoyed The City and the City well enough to read it twice. Have you read Mieville's Kraken? That's another one I liked well enough to reread."

The City and the City was my first Mieville book. Must say I was pretty impressed. I'll have to add Kraken to my list.

message 224: by Serendi (new)

Serendi | 848 comments Re Blindsight:

My take is that maybe 2/3 to 3/4 of the book is setting up dominoes on end in a complex pattern.

Then Watts knocks over the first domino and you watch this one fall and the next fall and the next and the next and....

I loved it. Haven't reread it, but my initial impression was stunned amazement.

David Sven (gorro) | 1582 comments Finished the Audible version of The Wise Man's Fear. Loved it
My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....

Continuing to work my way through the Dresden books with the Audible version of Summer Knight The Dresden Files 4

I finished The Way of Kings last night (My Review). Loved it.

Tonight I will be starting Memories of Ice as my Malazan group read continues.

Igor (igork) | 105 comments I'm finally done with Altered Carbon, not that I didn't like it but I wasn't impressed either.
Getting back to post-apocalyptic books with Earth Abides and so far its excellent.

message 228: by kvon (new)

kvon | 563 comments Re Blindsight, the main character is hard to warm up to (I'm finding this true in most sf I've read lately, comopared to fantasy), but the ideas about the aliens were really compelling. The humans, I could take or leave them. I was happy that I read it at the end.

The aliens in Blindsight are the most alien aliens I've encountered in all my years of reading SF.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments I'm excited that my next book up is a review copy of The Whole Fromage: Adventures in the Delectable World of French Cheese. On the surface, cheese has nothing to do with science fiction or fantasy, until you read this blog entry called The Fungus in Your Cheese is Having Weird Sex. You're welcome!

AndrewP (andrewca) | 2667 comments kvon wrote: "The aliens in Blindsight are the most alien aliens I've encountered in all my years of reading SF. ..."

Yeah they were great. Unfortunately the whole V***ires part overshadowed them, resulting in a lot of ridicule here on S/L Goodreads.

message 235: by Kurt (new)

Kurt Rocourt (krocourt) | 53 comments I'm reading the John Carter book a Princess of Mars.

message 236: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments I finished listening to The Forever War and started on The Way of Shadows. The Forever War was very good, but it was pretty obvious how old it is. I'm about 4 hours into The Way of Shadows and really enjoying it. I had started it in paperback several years ago and my son stole it because he liked the cover. I don't think he ever finished it. I got the whole trilogy on sale from Audible, so it's a good thing I'm liking it.

I paused my readings of Wool Omnibus and Dragonflight to read Kitty Rocks the House. I love Kitty Norville almost as much as I love Mercy Thompson and Harry Dresden and will always drop everything to read or listen to the latest of any of them.

I am really liking Wool Omnibus, but I don't think I'll finish Dragonflight. I'm just not that big on dragon stories.

message 237: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 2433 comments Finished The Collected Short Fiction of C.J. Cherryh and am going for some good, old-fashioned RPG tie-in fiction with Prince of Wolves by Dave Gross. (I've heard good things about the Pathfinder novels; also, after reading a bunch of physical books, I'm ready to go back to my Kindle.)

message 238: by Bill (new)

Bill | 8 comments Highly recommend "The Drunken Botanist", a very cool history of alcohol with all the neat sciencey stuff distilled for your listening pleasure, ha!

message 239: by Jim (new)

Jim (kskryptonian) | 202 comments Am in the middle of a move, so my copy of Downbelow Station was in storage. I read Armor by John Steak something because I lemmed it after 100 pages back when it was new. I also got a big ole bunch of Hellboy comics from a friend I have been plowing through.

message 240: by Igor (new)

Igor (igork) | 105 comments I finished Earth Abides today and picked up The Road from Audible being my first title to listen. Narrator's voice is perfect for this book.
Also starting Legion by Brandon Sanderson.

The Swanwick was amazing and I'd highly recommend it.

Have you read "Innumeracy" yet? I would suggest it.

message 247: by Paul (new)

Paul (latepaul) Since I last posted on this thread I've read The Wee Free Men and The World Of Ptavvs.

Wee Free Men was OK. It was short and funny in places. Obviously as a YA book it's not really aimed at me but since I want to read all Discworld books and it was next on the list I did.

Ptavvs I read as part of a mini-reread project I'm doing (trying to test my memory versus actual text). I quite enjoyed it. It's early Niven which is big on ideas but not great with characters. However it has an interesting concept and it's fun to see how primitive some of the future tech is.

Next up is Dragonflight

I'd like someone midway between Niven who is not so good at characters, and Bova whose stories (imho) are about 90% the characters whining at each other about their feelings.

message 249: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Johnson | 15 comments Now it is the end of the Month this is my read list. :)
Summer Knight
Death Masks
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
The Story of the Stone
Little Fuzzy
Fuzzy Nation
The Last Colony
and
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Woo...The Fuzzys and Downbelow were audio books, for the 1.5 hours I spend in the car a day commuting.

message 250: by kvon (new)

kvon | 563 comments I'm reading Spellbound by Correia, book 2 in his 1940s superhumans saga.

I opened up The Unreal and the Real last night and reread The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. I hadn't remembered the first part at all, and there are some great observations there, but it's overshadowed by my dread of the ending.
