message 753: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm reading Close to Shore: A True Story of Terror in An Age of Innocence which is really interesting. I also picked up a classic, O Pioneers!.

I read George by Alex Gino at the end of last month Pam and I believe I gave it 3 out of 5 stars. I've yet to write up my review for it but was quite impressed, considering the topic and the audience it has been written for.

I added George, looks interesting. I think time is ticking down before the book gets banned in many places, at least in the U.S.

I really do hope this book isn't banned.

I'm so excited that everyone likes the audio version of The Graveyard Book. I just got a copy for my middle school library. I've also bought it in the graphic format.

Sorry to hear that KimeyDiann. Someone in one of my other groups just finished it as well and was disappointed.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished Immortal in Death. I'm really enjoying this series for now.

Tomorrow, I will start my monthly challenge pick, The Rithmatist.

Lynda | 836 comments Bella wrote: I added George, looks interesting. I think time is ticking down before the book gets banned in many places, at least in the U.S. "

Now, I have to read it!

I finally finished Dust, which completed the Silo Series, and also pushed me over on Level Seven of the serial killer challenge. I really liked the series; it ended in a satisfying way, and for a book without a lot of victories, that was good enough for me. I'm not sure that I have such a cynical view of the world, though. I'll probably write up a review this weekend.

I also finished Anna Dressed in Blood. If Buffy and Supernatural had a baby, watered down what made those two stories unique, and sprinkled it with Canadian accents, and a creepy love story. You'd have Anna. It suffers from not being the book I thought it was, but also, I felt like the meat of the story got buried behind what essentially became a red herring.

I'm now reading Little Fuzzy on audio, and downloaded The Girl Who Played with Fire, which I'm going to read along side The Secret History of Wonder Woman, and an assortment of comics I have from the library. Waiting for my spooky October books to come in.

I enjoyed this book Lisa. Although, I think there was more meaning in each story than I actually picked up but it didn't matter they were still really good.

message 766: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Anna wrote: "I enjoyed this book Lisa...."

Glad to hear you enjoyed it Anna :) I probably won't pick up on all the hidden meanings either as I'm not overly familiar with Scottish folklore but I'm fascinated by it all the same so I am really looking forward to reading it.

I'm always looking for good short story collections. I like the read them in the morning over breakfast. I've only had two sips of my coffee, and when I read your post, I though you personally were starting a portable shelter. *sigh*

Lol Lynda! Starting my own portable shelter could be an interesting business venture though..... ;)

message 769: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments Just started Cro-Magnon: How the Ice Age Gave Birth to the First Modern Humans by Brian M. Fagan and It Must've Been Something I Ate: The Return of the Man Who Ate Everything by Jeffrey Steingarten. For fiction, Miss Hazel and the Rosa Parks League by Jonathan Odell. I really shouldn't have started any new books because I'm trying to wrap up all my partially finished books before the end of the year.

I did start organizing my GR's shelves; I got moved some books off "Currently Reading" that I added, but hadn't really started. Just intended to start.

I wonder if there's a maximum character number for naming your GR's shelves. I need a shelf for books I really should read soon called: Books I bought as new releases because my library's wait list was too long, but still haven't read, and now I feel guilty that I spent money on a book I could've borrowed and could have used to buy a book I may actually have read by now.

message 770: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

lol - I need that same shelf. Plus, I think I would have made certain to read them if they were library books. When they are my own, I know they'll be waiting for me whenever I'm ready so I just don't prioritize them.

message 772: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments There is unfortunately a character limit. I've hit it before :(

Love the shelf name though.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Good one, Janice. :)

I am starting book #15 in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency for my level 15 series kill and The Girl in the Spider's Web for the Crypto Challenge.

message 775: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Unplugged a bit and blew through four comic books today: Birds of Prey, Vol. 4: The Cruelest Cut, and Birds of Prey, Vol. 5: Soul Crisis to finish the series. I certainly liked the first two books of the series better than the last 3. My favorite character took a turn in volume 4, which could have been fun, but was never followed up on. She didn't even appear in the last volume. It ended with a time jump, which was fun.

I also read Locke & Key, Vol. 2: Head Games and Locke & Key, Vol. 3: Crown of Shadows. If I had the rest of the volumes in from the library, I'd probably still be reading them. They're amazing...I discussed them further over on the Spooky Theme/Atmosphere thread.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I started Sweetheart by Chelsea Cain over the weekend. I couldn't get my hands on Something Wicked This Way Comes for the group read like I was hoping, so I decided to work on a Serial Killer book. Hmm, that was a play on words that I didn't even intend on. It is a book about a serial killer and it fits into the year long series challenge as well. I must still be half asleep because I found that way more amusing than I'm sure it really was! lol

message 777: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished my monthly challenge read, The Rithmatist and really enjoyed it. Gave it 5 stars.

Last night, I started Drake of Tanith for my series challenge. (e book)

Tomorrow, I start The Black Company on audiobook. This was a book that I abandoned a couple of years ago. I was fairly new to audiobooks and I had trouble following it. I'm doing a personal challenge of "second chances" and will give this one a try.

I'm really curious as to what's going to happen to Joel (view spoiler). He made me think of Sherlock Holmes for some odd reason. The next book isn't due until 2017! ACK!

Yes, it's the first time I've read Sanderson. I have the first book of Mistborn on my wishlist. I want to read more of his stuff.

I will pop by the discussion on it when I start reading again. That reminds me, I've been so busy lately that I haven't had time to stop by the group.

This will be the second time I've read the book. I first read it when it was published and Gabaldon was an unknown. I really enjoyed the book but decided not to continue the series. Maybe I'll change my mind this time.

message 784: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments I started Black Cat Crossing by Kay Finch- needed a cozy mystery to read and this seemed to fit in with Halloween.

I'm also reading Romancing the Dark in the City of Light by Ann Jacobus. It has a bit of an odd/bumpy start, but I bought it so I'll try to force myself past it.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished A Portable Shelter which I rated 5 stars. I absolutely loved this collection of short stories which are all based around Scottish folklore. It's one of the best short story collections I have read in a long time and I am now really looking forward to reading Kirsty Logan's first novel, The Gracekeepers, which I am planning on picking up later this month for the monthly challenge.

What, what? Do I need to read this? Every time I read the summary, I say no. I get to the part about kids disappearing from their rooms leaving a trail of blood behind. This is a Children's Book of the year in 2013?????

message 787: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Joel is very observant and sort of worms his way into situations because of his curiosity. I don't know if I'm the only one who got a Sherlock Holmes vibe or not. But, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone.

message 788: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments It is a great book Cherie. It is definitely no more graohic than Graveyard Book by Gaiman I'd say

message 789: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I agree Janice with your spoiler. And I can see why you thought of Sherlock Holmes although it didn't spring to mind whilst reading. I really liked Warbreaker and Elantris which have very good audio versions. Steelheart is a fun read - another YA book. I have the Mistborn books on my kindle and I really want to get started with them.

Yea I've been so busy myself lately. I have a lot of books to read and Drums of Autumn is so long, I don't even know if I will be able to finish it this month. I always take breaks by reading other books since its so long. I got a whole bunch more hours at work. Its only 10 more hours a week bit it really is a big difference in finding time to read.

That's what I'm doing with A Clash of Kings. It's going to take me a long time to read that book, if I ever get back to it with all the books I'm sneaking in. LOL!

message 794: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished Drake of Tanith so I can now read the next book in the series for the toppler. I bailed a second time on The Black Company. It is just not grabbing my attention. It's off the "second chance" shelf, buried forever in my "abandoned" shelf. There's no way I'll start a "third chance" one.

I will start Lover Unbound for my series challenge, and Bird Box for the group read.

message 795: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished reading Bird Box for the group read which I didn't think that much of. Now on to The Strain, also for the spooky setting theme this month. Hopefully I'll enjoy this one more. I'm still reading The Passage for the buddy read which I'm really enjoying. I hope I don't get the events confused in the two books and there are some similarities.

Lol. Do tell what you thought over in the thread. I'd like to hear it! There was a lot of hype about this book so I'm quite surprised.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Chelsea Cain is an amazing author when it comes to creating suspense. I'm a little over halfway through Sweetheart and I'm completely enthralled. I had to make myself put it down last night so I could go to bed and now I'm watching the clock waiting on lunch-time so I can read more.
