Why Morpheus is Better than Jeb

Well, the reason I think Alyssa will end up with Jeb is this-

Morpheus' redeemable qualities (other than appearance)-

He's pretty much Sebastian in the way that he's a hot magical butler
Believes in Alyssa
Loyal

Jeb's Redeeming Qualities (other than appearance-
Loyal
Can skate


Jeb is purposely made to be (and no offense to either character meant here) not as good as Morpheus. This proves Alyssa loves him more, as she is willing to literally leave a kingdom behind to be with him.

There's my theory on why she ends up with him...

I just finished Unhinged and my reasons for adoring Morpheous just went up. I didn't even know that was possible. But I adore that sad, snarky little moth man so much it hurts okay. (Also, while I still don't like him...at all, Jeb did gain some respect in my eyes in this book. Personally, I feel I like Morpheus because he's unconventionally attractive.

I mean, if the guy behind you in geometry suddenly had moth wings and eyeliner, it wouldn't be the same, no?
Therefore, Morpheus is attractive because of the subtle physical notes like a slim, yet masculine figure or doll-like skin. It's unearthly, and unconventional.
My appreciation for Morpheus is more what comes out of his mouth, however-probably because guys aren't my thing lol-because Madam Howard, your dialogue for that boy is AMAZING.

Hehe! Awww, *blushes* Thanks! I have to admit, sometimes he surprises even me. Weird, I know. But it's true. I'll be like, did he really just say that? ;) He's one of the most challenging characters I've ever written.

I like that you also have reasons besides those for looks. I like them. They're good reasons. They are a part of why I like Morpheus, to be sure.

Jeb already had my respect, but I'm glad you respect him. I remember thinking similar reasoning of Morpheus at one point, that I was wary of him, but he definitely does love her.

It's almost hard to figure out who would be better for Alyssa because both of them DO love her - and it's obviously that she cares for both of them. And even though I love Moprh it's like "but wait, Jeb really loves her enough to die for her, and and Alyssa cares for him to but MORPH."
I think that no matter who she chooses I will feel an extreme amount of sympathy for the boy who is left behind - even if it is Jeb. (because that boy has gone through hell and back for Alyssa and even when he doubts her feelings for him he still risks his life for him. UGGGH.)

Haha! NO, the jewels aren't piercings. It's part of him. As demonstrated by how they're connected to his moods and emotions. And he only wore eyeliner when (view spoiler)[he was in the real world wearing Finley's imprint (hide spoiler)]. All of his otherworldly beauty (eye markings included) is natural. As much as anything in Wonderland can be "natural", that is. Unnatural might be a better adjective. *coughs*

How is Morpheus superior to Jeb, you ask? Well, go grab some snacks, you could be reading this for a while….

For starters, allow me to point out Jeb’s flaws. They make Morph look good and we all know he’d enjoy kicking Jeb’s butt in any way possible. Not that I blame him. Morph, if you’re reading this, we all love you! (Yes, I’m crazy. But I’m a netherling. Can you blame me?)

Here goes. No offense Jeb, but I really can’t stand you. TEAM MORPHEUS FOR THE WIN!

• Way too overprotective. Seriously, it’s bordering on creepy. Yes, he’s the best friend and naturally cares about her safety, but come on! Alyssa is more than capable of taking care of herself. He treats her as if she’s fragile and unstable. Actually, he behaves like one of those parents who have a whole melodramatic showdown over their child who only bumped itself. Jeb! Have a little faith in Alyssa already!!
• Wants to know Alyssa’s business, regardless if she’s willing to share it. This really peeves me off. A girl doesn’t have to tell her best friend/boyfriend every single thought she has. Some thoughts are her own after all, and Jeb keeps pressuring her to tell him stuff she may not be ready/willing to share. Oh, all in the name of protecting her of course. Jeb! Again, have a little more faith!
• Possessive. Another trait I can’t stand – in anybody. Jeb’s lucky I’m not his girlfriend, I’d have dumped him after a few minutes in Wonderland. Anyway, back on track. Possessive. *shudder* I can understand boyfriends don’t like anyone getting friendly with their girl but Jeb just takes it too far. Morpheus sits on a mushroom. Threat. Morpheus tries to help. Threat. Morpheus smiles. Threat. Morpheus breathes. Threat. GAH! *pulls hair and stomps* Jeb! I’ll repeat for you: faith, faith, faith, faith, FAITH!!!!! Alyssa chose you, so relax already!
• Repressed Alyssa. “No, it’s too dangerous.” “Let me do it” “You can’t handle it” … *sigh* Sound familiar?
• Has to approve of anything before she does it/control freak. Need I say more?
• Cheated on Taelor. Yes, she’s a witch, but does anyone deserve to be cheated on? Romantic betrayal much?
• Pressured Alyssa to get along with Taelor. How can she if Taelor refuses to get along with Alyssa? Did Jeb even talk to Taelor about getting along with our Al?
• Used Taelor. Used someone else’s heart to try to block out feelings for another girl. All time low. I feel sorry for Taelor.
• Dumped Taelor the night of the dance. Yes, he finally realizes he can’t run from his feelings, but he should have at least had the decency to accompany Taelor at the dance like he promised.
• Lack of faith in Alyssa. I’ve pointed this out a few times actually.
• Can’t accept Alyssa’s crazy, dark, wild netherling heritage. Alyssa was born with the mad world of Wonderland in her heart. Jeb can only accept the human part of her heart. It’s like telling a duck you’ll only love them if they’re a swan. Jeb wants Alyssa’s netherling side to stay hidden. He wants Alyssa to only be what he wants her to be.
• Mixes up his priorities. (going into Unhinged here) Tell me, what is the purpose of a date? Well, the main thing is to spend time with whoever you’re with. If you’re going to go on a date, spend time with whoever took the time to be with you, not who’s on the phone.
• Doesn’t make enough time for his girlfriend. That’s a sure-fire way to start growing apart. It doesn’t make Alyssa feel important to him either.
• Betrayed the trust of Alyssa’s parents. That’s always a smart thing to do. Not.
• Still refuses/doesn’t even try to get along with Morpheus. What a hypocrite, right? “Alyssa, try to get along with Taelor even though she’s the bane of your existence.” Jeb, try following your own advice, why don’t ya? Yes, Morph drives you nuts, but you’re the one who’s letting him get to you.
• Near the end, he sees something, and doesn’t let Alyssa explain herself. Would you expect the same treatment from Alyssa, Jeb? What if she saw someone doing the same thing to you? Wouldn’t you want to explain that it wasn’t what it appeared?
• Near the end, he gives Alyssa the cold shoulder and then decides “it’s far from over.” Way confusing, and frankly, peeves me off. Sending mixed signals is annoying enough; but now you have to take it to the extreme? What the heck?! (hide spoiler)]


*deep breath* Okay. I hope my fellow mothlings are fired up; coz there’s more where that came from. Now, what was I gonna say next?

Oh, yeah. Jeb’s flaws? Morpheus is only guilty of one of them. Why the heck would Morpheus want to get along with Jeb? But I notice that if Alyssa asks, Morpheus will at least try to be civil. He’s done that on several occasions. Jeb? Nope. His definition of civil is mostly glaring at Morph and calling him names. And people say Morpheus is the uncivil one. Tut tut.

Now, I notice many people say Morpheus can only accept Alyssa’s netherling side. He can’t accept her human side at all. Well, hate to burst your bubble, but that ain’t true.

(view spoiler)[From their childhood, Morpheus has always respected Alyssa’s human side. Even going as far to protect it while in their Wonderland dream adventures. He taught her about the laws of Wonderland and let her try out her own human strengths while there. When she finally got to Wonderland (Splintered), he was still respectful of Alyssa’s human heart and ways, although this time, he also started pointing out Alyssa’s awakening netherling heart. I feel that some readers may have interpreted this as Morpheus trying to pressure Alyssa into accepting her netherling side. He didn’t. It was merely the fact that Alyssa felt uncomfortable that she had a darker side, and her discomfort rose each time Morpheus pointed it out. He has always respected and accepted her human heart and ways.

Again, this is proved a year later (Unhinged) when Morpheus re-entered Alyssa’s life. For Alyssa’s sake, Morpheus adapted into her world completely. He even had a car *chuckle*. He obeyed all the rules of Alyssa’s world so that Alyssa wouldn’t fear others learning of her secret through Morph.

Think about it. Morpheus could have just walked around in his usual form and people would have just found reasons to justify his appearance. He could be a very dedicated cosplayer, or a performer, or a public pranker, et cetera. Whatever. A reason will always be found. But no. Morpheus respected and cared for Alyssa’s human heart by adapting into the human realm and sparing Alyssa humiliation and ridicule from her peers. Even if she didn’t see it that way.

Morpheus also refrained from his usual hinting at Alyssa’s netherling heart while in the company of humans. If this doesn’t prove how much Morpheus loves ALL of Alyssa, then I don’t know what will. He’s selfish, yes, but not as much as he wants people (and readers) to believe. (hide spoiler)]

Yes, Morph. Your mothlings see right through you. Actions speak louder than words.

Which brings me to another topic.

(view spoiler)[Jeb. While it’s nice that you tried to permanently lock yourself in a box to keep Al safe, you still would have been her undoing. Nearly were, actually.

Alyssa should have used her wish to banish Red, but instead she used it to save her love. I think we all would have done that, but then we all would have had to face Red’s murderous wrath. Alyssa nearly lost herself because Jeb wanted to play Knight.

Also, let’s say Alyssa didn’t have a wish but she ended up safe. Jeb, did it ever occur to you that while Alyssa would be physically safe, her emotional state would be a chaotic riot that would eventually descend into emptiness and grief? Alyssa would never have been able to forgive herself for taking you to Wonderland with her. She’d be depressed and grieving for the rest of her life. “Well, at least she can live. That’s why I did that for her” But would she have been living if she was heartbroken for the rest of her life?

Morpheus, however, gave himself up (or tried to, anyway) to a hell of a death (or maybe half-life?) inside a vicious bandersnatch who probably would have chewed him up to ribbons given half the chance. Not to mention that Morph would have been stuck there for all eternity had he not had the vorpal sword.

And, a year later, how many times did Morpheus save Alyssa’s life when events got too out of control? He saved her AND Jeb from drowning in the tunnel, and he rescued Jeb from the tumtum berries and saved Alyssa from choking. Morpheus faced down an oncoming train to rescue Alyssa from the clutches of her evil seatbelt (haha) and he stopped Alyssa from hitting the little boy so that she wouldn’t have the guilt and agony of killing someone (again, Morph proves that he loves Al’s human heart!). Not to mention that he also faced down Sister Two so that both she AND Jeb could escape safely. (hide spoiler)]

So… Morph = 6, Jeb = 1. And I haven’t even read The Moth in the Mirror yet! *sigh* I can’t find it on iTunes, but never mind that. Onwards!!

Deny it all you want Morpheus, we mothlings know you have a good heart underneath that bad boy act.

Personally, I think Morpheus is better for Alyssa.

(view spoiler)[He’s utterly devoted and loyal to her. He loves her netherling side. He loves her human side. He loves all of her, and sees her for what and who she really is. He supports her, respects her decisions (even if he doesn’t agree) and treats her as an equal. He has faith in her, and believes she can do anything she sets her mind to. He listens to her, trusts her, and defends her when the situation calls for it. He allows her to try out her own strengths, and accepts her weaknesses. He doesn’t even think twice about giving up his life to save hers. He tolerates Jeb and is even respectful to Alyssa’s mother, even though she betrayed him. All he wants in return is Alyssa’s love.

Jeb, however …… well, just reread his flaws. Jeb does have virtues and some of them are virtues that I value highly. But personally, I think Jeb’s relationship with Alyssa is….what’s the word? …. Parasitic. Yeah.

I for one would not be able to stay in a relationship that was sucking the energy out of me. If Jeb was MY boyfriend, I’d always be second-guessing myself and lacking self-confidence. I’d always be asking myself why his career is way more important to him then 5 minutes of quality time. I’d start to believe that I wasn’t worth much and I was just lucky SOMEONE wanted me. And I’d probably learn to depend on others, rather than doing stuff for myself. And then, there’s the fact that Jeb gives off the impression that he’d dump you and leave if he found out about your netherling heritage. You’d always be hiding your true self, the girl that is half human, half netherling. You’d change yourself to be what he wants you to be….. Nope. I definitely couldn’t handle it. (hide spoiler)]

WAKE UP, ALYSSA!!

I know this is a team Morpheus thread, but I'm Team Jebpheus, and I don't think you're being fair to Jeb.

As to by Jeb seeing Morpheus as a threat, well might I point out that Morpheus does want her, so it's understandable that Jeb wouldn't like him. I don't consider it possessive for him to want Alyssa to want just him. I mean, in a committed relationship, you're not dating other people on the side. And how did he cheat on Taylor? He didn't kiss or date Alyssa until he'd broken up with Taylor. And yes, he did use Taylor, which makes me uncomfortable, but Morpheus isn't exactly innocent of that accusation either (White Queen anyone?). About him dumping Taylor the night of the dance, in his defense, I'm not sure I could go to the dance with someone if I knew I was going to end it soon either. It would feel wrong. At least when he made up his mind, he didn't string her along anymore. lack of faith? As I said, he gets better with that. And can't accept her dark/Netherling side? Are we forgetting that she is his muse, and even when he didn't remember Wonderland, his drawings of her look like she did in Wonderland? And about the phone call. That did irk me, but he regretted it later, actually blaming himself for Alyssa being in danger because of it. How did he betray the trust of her parents? I am legitimately asking, as I can't remember what you're talking about. As for refusing to get along with Morpheus, I point out that they're different situations. Jeb was dating Taylor while him and Alyssa were friends. Alyssa was dating Jeb while it's clear that Morpheus was interested in her and had no qualms of trying to take her from him. As for what he said, I don't consider than mixed signals. I think he's angry, and they might fight about it later, but he doesn't want to give up on the relationship. Just because you have a fight with your significant other, even a really bad one, doesn't mean it's over. (hide spoiler)]

And I like Morpheus too. Just a friendly reminder that you don't have to hate Jeb to like Morpheus.

I do have to defend Jeb on one note. He had already broken up w/Tae. It's on page 366 of Splintered. Taelor admits to Al that Jeb broke up with her before prom, which was before they jumped through the mirror. But, it's confusing I think, because (view spoiler)[for one, that's the alternate reality after he lost his memory and also (hide spoiler)] the reader isn't told that until the end. SO, that's my bad as the author for not giving it clarity earlier. ;) I take full responsibility!

Well that makes much more sense :) Thanks for the info. I'll admit it was the alternate reality that had me confused. My opinion of Jeb is a little more positive now.

Agreed, but @B: I wouldn't call Morpheus "vulnerable." He's a rather armoured character but anyone strong wouldn't be strong all the time, and that's why I don't think characters like Morpheus or Morpheus himself are vulnerable.

While do agree with a lot of those points (I wouldn't be Team Jebpheus if I didn't like Morpheus) I wouldn't say he's always honest, because he has tricked her. Due to this, I wouldn't say hge always does the right thing either.

I don't know... the love that he has for Alyssa, and how he always admits it even though she denies it - he allows himself to be vulnerable. I think his deep love for Alyssa makes him really vulnerable because it affects him much, and she knows it.

Woah hardcore Morpheus fans!!! I guess both are fine... [SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS??]. Except that Jeb will die and Morpheus will live like forever (correct me if I'm wrong). And in the book, it says that Morpheus just doesn't want to wait for Jeb to get old, he wants Alyssa to leave with him to Wonderland already and make her forget the human world. So pretty much, when all her friends and family die then she'll go to Wonderland maybe?? I don't know. I need to read the books again :P. So she CAN have both, just Morpheus wants her now. But she'll probs feel weird, having both and all. Oh well. Whoever understands, can you please explain further? I'm not very good at explaining things :/
