I agree! I can't believe he managed to get away with it all those times.

Mira If you have to choose, would you pick a good story with a bad writer or a bad story with a good writer?

I've been thinking about this, has anyone considered it?

I think I'd give the good writer with the bad story a chance because I tried it the other way round and I just couldn't xD

What do you guys think?

I'd go with a good story by a bad writer. I've read a few and enjoyed them ☺

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments Good story, bad writer.

I don't care how well it's written if's a crap story.

message 4805: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) | 4856 comments Yeah, I'd go with good story, bad writer as well.
To be honest, the first Harry Potter book.... Was it really that well written? I'm not saying it was bad, but it wasn't great either... That's just one example. Also, the writer can always improve, which Rowling is a good example of :P Haha

message 4806: by Mira (new)

Mira I don't know, maybe you guys are right. The thing is I really loved the ideas of books like Shiver, Shatter Me and Obsidian but the characters annoyed the hell out of me and at times the story itself got weird or stupid. But on the other hand, books like Hopeless, Crash, The Fault in Our Stars and The Hunger Games are not books I would pick up on my own because I didn't like the premise very much. I ended up liking all of them. So, I don't know if it's a matter of bad writers or I just don't know what's good for me xD

kento (daechwita) | 969 comments Good story, bad writer. An example of this would be Stephenie Meyer's The Host. I liked it :D

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments Every time i've read a bad book, which had good writing, it seems to have made the book drag more, because everything is described in more detail.

I hate that. I don't think it's necessarily "good" to describe every single thing. My favorite books are mostly shorter and more succinct. I read Daughter of Smoke & Bone because Laini Taylor is supposed to be such a great writer but I ended up hating the way it was written and didn't "love" it but fought my way till the second book which I absolutely hated :\

I read this one - Eternal Flame by Jamie Jenkins formatting and writing was absolutely awful, but the story was actully pretty good!

message 4812: by Marie (new)

Marie | 257 comments Good writter, bad story all the way. For exemple, I love the idea of most Jennifer l Armentrout and Abbi Glines's book(except the Vincent boys), but the writting in their books just keep me from enjoying the story. But I have to say, to me the author'S ability to writte interesting and complex character is a part of their writting and often to me the problem is in the characters. I could read an entire series with interesting characters even if I hate the storyline.

I thought it was only me! I liked Daughter of smoke and bones after I was done with about 55% (or more, I don't really remember), but before that, I was seriously considering a DNF. I still haven't started the second book.

I hate Abbi Glines! All those amazing plots are wasted on her! I have yet to see a character that she wrote aren't wooden.

I vote for good writer, bad story. AT least I can stomach those.

Yes! Exactly! I think my main issue is in fact the characters. Characters make or break the story. You know I think this might have been my issue all along and I just didn't phrase it well. Thanks for doing that by the way xD I totally agree that if the characters are interesting, the book is interesting even if the story line is crap.

Hahaha oh my god, I totally thought that too xD Everybody was raving about how great the writing of Daughter of Smoke and Bone is, and here I was trying to finish it like it was homework or something. I kind of liked the characters (which kept me going: Marie's point) but I wasn't a fan of the writing or the many many details or the multiple view points of characters I don't care about (that actually was in Days of Blood & Starlight not Daughter of Smoke and Bone though).

message 4818: by Mira (new)

Mira @Abbie + @Sarah You guys didn't like it too? Haha x'D I thought you'd like it because you wouldn't really care how it was, you know, considering you read like lightening bolts :P

I read it ages ago, when I couldn't read so fast. i think it took me a couple of days and i was so confused! i am tempted to try it again though! especially as all three books are out now ☺

message 4820: by Mira (new)

Mira When you couldn't read so fast, it took you a couple of days? It took me a week to finish it xD You know I don't think really hated it so much when I read it, the second book really drove it home though xD

message 4823: by Abi (new)

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments I think the second one would drive me bonkers. Book one was bad enough, it doesn't need middle book syndrome thrown on top of that!

I started reading it so looooooong ago. But it seems so big and has so many pointless descriptions and the story seems like it goes round and round and I have yet to find the courage (and patience) to try and finish it.

But not Storm (Elemental, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer What's up with that?! I really want to read this series, but I won't buy them as long as I don't know whether I'll like the first book or not.

Dr. Andy | 14480 comments Does anyone hear songs and then connect them to a story after you've read it? Like I keep listening to City of Angels by 30 seconds to Mars and all I can think is that it's perfect for the The Mortal Instruments. It is pretty much Jace. (And Will a bit from The Infernal Devices)

Inês | 583 comments So I'm reading this book For Real (Rules of Love, #1) by Chelsea M. Cameron and I'm in the beginning and the MC has talked to, lets call it the love interest, for one time only and she doesn't know his name, now I'm in the part when he introduces himself lets see it.
I don’t look back as Jett and I exit the bar and walk toward his car. “Also, although Laptop Guy is the name on my birth certificate, I go by Jett. It’s actually my middle name, but no one can pronounce my actual first name.”
please note the epic fail...

Hey everyone!

As I've had a reading slump for about two weeks, I decided that maybe what I needed was something that would push me to read more. Soooo... I decided I'd try the A Book A Week challenge! 4 books a month is quit a big deal for me as I'm a slow reader but we'll see!

I just get irritated by books which have the same name as songs, I Want It That Way (2B Trilogy #1) by Ann Aguirre - had the backstreet boys song stuck in my head for a week, In the End (In the After, #2) by Demitria Lunetta - linkin park, It's in His Kiss (Lucky Harbor, #10) by Jill Shalvis - shoop, shoop song, If I Could Turn Back Time by Nicola Doherty - cher, and the list goes on...
