Jalyn (jalynnie) | 3827 comments I ordered some books online at a discount store, but they didn't say that the bottoms of some of the books were marked. I wouldn't have bought them if I would have know because I was planning on having them signed and giving them away, but I can't have an author sign a marked book! Ugh! :(

Amazon say that their bargain books 'might' have marks on them because they put black marks on the bottom when they're bargain books. if they didn't warn you that there might be marks on them, then I think you should be able to return them.

It wasn't through Amazon. This company has a scratch and dent (aka damaged) section so I made sure not to order one of those. I'm really picky about my books. I will occasionally buy books that have marks on the bottom if I think I might not like it. Then if I do like it, I will order a new copy that isn't marked (yes, I'm that crazy/particular). I figured that a mark on the bottom would fall into the scratch and dent category, because that black mark devalues the book. I sent in a return inquiry so hopefully they get back to me soon.

You must be particular! I'm happy with anything. I got some books from a car boot sale today for 50p each and they were a bit battered, but the story is the same ☺ I do hate it when people purposely break the spine of a new book though, I can literally hear the book crying when they do it. torture.

I just can't. I'd put these in a yard sale and get $1 out of them before I'd have them signed. It defeats the purpose to me. An author's signature adds value to the book (probably more for the reader than for money), but a mark devalues the book. I just couldn't do it.

I wouldn't take a damaged book to a signing, but then we don't get many signings over here. the only book i got signed personally was a book written by one of my university lecturers, and it was the first time he'd ever been asked!

I buy used books too, even if they are beat up, but if I like the book and will read it again in the future then I will buy a new version and give the old one away. I'm just weird like that. :)

I know what you mean about the spines.

message 3016: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

actually, thinking about it, the book I asked him to sign I had bought second-hand. I don't mind buying damaged books, but I would never damage them myself - i don't even like highlighting kindle books.

My mid terms are coming up, so that means every freaking book that I have been waiting for has been released (read : Untold by Sarah Rees Brennan) and I can't stop reading those!! Grr....

The only author I've ever met is Beth Fantaskey and that's only because she doesn't live that far from me and she did a signing a few towns over from where I live so I went.

I've always wanted to go to more of them, but there aren't ever any around here so this year I decided to travel to go see them. I am planning on going to two different author events this year :)

My 9 yr old: I think I'm going to start Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince now. Do you know how many pages it is?
Me: Hmm. I can't remember.
My 9 year old: I'll just look in the back of the book. (checks book). Oh, it's only 652 pages.

:D I think my son is probably like that because he's had at least one book read to him every day since he was born (until he could read on his own, then he did it).

It probably helps that for most of his life, I've had a book in my hand and also, the rule in our house is you get to stay up one extra hour if you spend that hour reading. :)

All I hear is 'Read stories mummy!' I can't wait 'til he can read to himself. There's only so much 'In the night garden' a person can take whilst sleep deprived.
Well done to your 9-year-old! That's pretty much what I was like as a child!

I think you can put a newspaper or something over your nails and then rub over it with rubbing alcohol with a cotton bud and that should transfer the print to your nails :)
