Numbers 2,3 and 4 are on my TBR list. Thanks Tango it's good to know that they will be worth reading.

message 23: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments I read like no books this year, I believe the count does not yet exceed 20, and at least a quarter of that is for school, with another quarter being graphic novels. Having said that, here is my list in order:

Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
Macbeth by Shakespeare
1984 by George Orwell (Which I read at least twice)

message 24: by Zuzu (last edited Dec 22, 2012 11:48PM) (new)

Zuzu Burford (baldyzuzu) The best 5 fiction books this year. No particular order

The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Alexie Sherman
The Gospel Of Gods And Crocodiles by Elizabeth Stead
The Safety Expert by Doug Richardson
Me and You by Niccolo Ammaniti
Myth Man by Alex Mueck

Also Non Fiction.

A Voyage to Australia: Private Journal of James Bell by James Bell
A Private Life by Michael Kirby
The President and the Assassin: McKinley, Terror, and Empire at the Dawn of the American Century by Scott Miller
The Tin Ticket: The Heroic Journey of Australia's Convict Women by Deborah J Swiss

Let's hope next year is just as good!

On the Jellicoe Road
A Game of Thrones
Jasper Jones

message 28: by Amber (new)

Amber (ukaunz) Too hard!

I guess my top 5 are:
A Game of Thrones
A Dog's Purpose
Catching Fire
Still Alice
On the Jellicoe Road

But I could just as easily have picked any of the following:
Unwind
Nine Days
The Burial
Alif the Unseen
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon
The Wee Free Men (the illustrated edition)

I kinda cheated there, didn't I :-)

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

My top five (I think--but there are a couple more books I would have liked to add):

The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi
The World Without Us by Alan Weisman
The Drowned Cities by Paolo Bacigalupi
Blackbirds by Chuck Wendig
Unwind by Neal Shusterman

message 30: by Kim Marie (new)

Kim Marie | 894 comments To whittle the list down to five I didn't include any sequels from previously started series, such as City of Dragons or Talulla Rising and I too cheated a little bit by listing my top five books by Australian authors, and then others:

Bitter Greens
Love, Honour, and O'Brien
The Tainted
Caleb's Crossing
On the Jellicoe Road

The Child Thief, A Game of Thrones and The Lies of Locke Lamora were all great reads.

The outstanding non-fiction for me and I would highly recommend it to history buffs is The Wolf: The German Raider That Terrorized the Southern Seas During World War I in an Epic Voyage of Destruction and Gallantry.

The Fault in Our Stars
Burning Lies
Daughter of Smoke and Bone
Bitter Greens
The Girl in Steel Capped Boots

message 33: by Katie (new)

Katie Stewart (katiewstewart) | 184 comments I've had a terrible year for reading...there are just not enough hours in the day. I entered the Australian Women's Reading Challenge and failed dismally. But my best five would be -

Tollesbury Time Forever Stuart Ayris
Foxmask Juliet Marillier
Assassin's Apprentice Robin Hobb
Strictly Murder Lynda Wilcox
Thursday's Child Sonya Hartnett

message 35: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimbreads) This is a tough one!
In no particular order (and subject to change as I think it all through over the remaining days of the year):

The Blackwater Lightship
Past the Shallows
The Shadow of the Wind
The Secret River
On Writing

message 36: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I only started using Goodreads properly during September/October this year, so I have no record of what I read during the first 8 months of the year and can't remember whether I read some things this year or last. So, based on what I've read since September (and what I remember reading earlier in the year), my top 5 were:
The Help by Kathryn Stockett The Help by Kathryn Stockett,
Ashenden by Elizabeth Wilhide Ashenden by Elizabeth Wilhide,

A Prison Diary by Jeffrey Archer,

No Sex in the City by Randa Abdel-Fattah No Sex in the City by Randa Abdel-Fattah and
The Lieutenant by Kate Grenville The Lieutenant by Kate Grenville.

And here's to 2013 - hopefully a year of many goodreads!

Sallyann wrote: "Thanks, Brenda, soooo, how do you place the url in a comment?"

Click on the 'add book/author' at the top RHS of this comment box...put your title into the box and hit search. When your correct title shows in the drop down box, click 'add', and it'll automatically show in here. If you want the cover, at the bottom of the drop down box you will see 'cover', change to that, and click 'add'. If you want to add the author, change over from 'book' to 'author' and click on your author.....

More hints and tips on how to work the site are shown here... http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1... and http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3...

Good luck:)

Ah - was very confused as I was adding comments via Goodreads App on my iPad and didn't have any of the options you described! But now I am on my computer I see what you mean! Thanks Brenda!

message 50: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) The app doesn't have the option, hopefully in a coming update
