Sara ♥ (saranicole) Lynlee4 - I LOVED Old Magic! It was REALLY cute!

I'm really sad that you guys don't like audiobooks! I was going to have that be my 25-point task--listen to and audiobook of at least 8 discs (9.5-10 hours)... But it seems quite redundant now. I started listening because I wanted to read, and my life was just so busy at the time that my in-the-car time was all I had to spare. I've fallen in love with audiobooks! It took me a while before I could pick up a book again, because it was just so nice to have people read to ME for a change!

On a different note, I'm VERY easily distracted, but if an audiobook is done well, and it's a book with a good story, I don't have any problems. I listen in my car, while cleaning house, at the gym--when I'm doing kind of mindless activities. Plus, it's great to be able to multitask--it makes you feel like you're accomplishing things other than sitting on your butt and reading. *shrugs* :)

BUT, if it's really that painful to you, get a YA audiobook. Some of them are only like 4 discs long. Of my 30 tasks so far, 7 or 8 of them will be audiobooks (that's all my library has).

I didn't realize Markus Zusak was Australian (his name sounds German, with all those Ks). I might read The Book Thief for that task instead of the one I had listed.

I also got my mom's recommendation late last night. She really came through for me! A Rose in Winter by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss! (It's her "favorite book of all time", apparently.) It's also now my ONLY romance novel in the entire bunch, which is a big improvement over the Winter Challenge. Of course, I still have a TON of YA Books, but I love them, so I don't care.

Read and clean at the same time while the kids are napping? ... just thinking out loud...

message 308: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Well, only one of my kids takes a nap...and cleaning happens all day long. I just don't think audiobooks work for me right now. I think I'll save them for when I'm older and losing my vision. :-)

message 309: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Of course, the kids are currently taking my hearing, so I may not be able to do it then either. Ha ha! :-)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) 5. Read a book written by an author who won a major literary prize (Nobel, Pulitzer etc.) in the year you were born (it does not have to be the book they won the award for).

Can I read The Hair of Harold Roux - Thomas Williams .

message 336: by Elizabeth (NC) (new)

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments Ok, I did the organize my books by the date added and the first book on my list is a graphic novel--I got excited because I haven't read any of those before, but then I looked more closely and realized it is The Arrival, which is a WORDLESS graphic novel. I'm assuming I should go to the next one on the list, or would this one count?

I'm going to read "Lightning Thief" for that one - It is about Greek Gods coming to life.

1962 here - it gives me some great choices ;-)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments First - THANKS SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS - it is something I've been looking forward to for weeks and they are always fantastic - wonderful job -- again.

My goal -- to beat my first challenge - only 165 points last time but I really didn't "work it".

A few suggestions:

For animal books - Watership Down - Greatest Bunny book ever!

For Fantasy -- hmm let me think...I must know one or two....Oh ya I've heard The Crown Conspiracy is good even for "non fantasy readers" and it is described as a "fun fast read" ;-)

The Crown Conspiracy by Michael J. Sullivan Watership Down by Richard Adams

Kristina (klonk) Robin: Thanks for the title. I'm not waiting for someone to return it from the library, so I'll read that one as well. I hadn't even heard of the author before, so it's always fun to "find" someone "new". :)

Cynthia: Would Catch 22 be okay for the "In Honor of Memorial and Armed Forces"-task? I've never read it, so I wouldn't know.

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) I love this idea!! I'm going to have a fabulous time doing the challenge. I notice that along with the questions some people have posted lists. Are these just placeholders, so I post what I'm planning to read for myself and then when I finish each book I do another post on this thread with my thoughts and current point total? I can't wait!

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) Also, if anyone knows of a book about sacrifice that would be good (but not Christian-themed), I would love suggestions. I celebrate Passover in the Spring, not Easter, so I'd rather not do the other two. Passover is also about sacrifice, partly.

I just flipped through the past pages of this thread, and some books others are reading or have suggested for books on sacrifice are:

Persuasion , A Thousand Splendid Suns , A Tale of Two Cities , and The Oath: A Novel

And WELCOME! I'm having so much fun with the Winter Challenge! It's a great motivator to read books outside what you would normally read.

As for how to post on here... I think posting lists are mostly to get pre-approval from Cynthia on tasks and help others come up with ideas about what to read. Also to set a goal and create some accountability for it. You can always change your mind later about which books you want to read. Nothing is set in stone until May 31st! After I finish each book, I'll come post, say whether or not I liked the book... stuff like that, then give an update on how many points I've accumulated to date. It's really not super formal though, so just have fun!

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Kristina, Cynthia did say it was ok to read it, which is why I managed to get a copy for £1 (GBP) today.

Portrait of the artist... isnàt too bad!

message 347: by Avory (new)

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) Thanks, Sara! I need to figure out a more effective way to search past threads ;-)

It also just occurred to me that since I give up bread for passover, I could technically read a book about bread! But maybe that'd be too tempting.

message 348: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I was thinking, "Well, you could read ANY dieting book! Those are always about giving up anything that tastes good!"

message 349: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Oh, and I just clicked on the page numbers down here at the bottom and scrolled through till I found people's lists. Nothing fancy.
