El Meghan, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus is neither a diary or a book about a diarist, so you will need to find something else for 25.2.

message 2903: by Liz M (new)

Liz M 5. Read a book written by an author who won a major literary prize (Nobel, Pulitzer etc.) in the year you were born: The Dispossessed won the 1974 Nebula Award (I know I didn't have to read the specific book that won the award, but coincidentally it was already on my to-read list!) 15 pts.

2. April is National Poetry Month – Read a book of poetry OR about a famous poet: The 100 Best Poems of All Time 15 pts.

An interesting collection of poems, some beloved and some unknown. The editor's made a point of including poetry from many different cultures & did not include more than one example by any poet. I would have preferred poems that are also well-known songs not be included ("Amazing Grace", "Battle Hymn of the Republic", etc.).

Tasks Completed: 10/39
Pages Read: 3603
Total: 180 pts.

I'm glad you liked it! I really liked it, too, and thought it was a very good biography. So much better than the movie! Have you seen the movie?

message 2905: by Avory (new)

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) Does anyone have an idea for a way to fit in Sarah Waters' Tipping the Velvet? I'm reading it for my lesbian book club this month and hoping to get it in somewhere. You can see which tasks I've already done back on page 20 of this thread.

message 2906: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments 25 Point Task # 1 DONE
I read Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown and The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
My total is now 140 points.

Judith,
Have you finished the rhyming challenge yet? You could read Tipping the Velvet with any of the following:
The Shipping News
Slipping into Darkness
Sipping from the Nile
Skipping Towards Gomorrah

And, I'm sure there are plenty of other titles that would work just as well.

message 2908: by Liz (new)

Liz (lizvegas) Finished Ros' 25 pt Task: Read a book from the bigreads list
Read:The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

I read a bit of everything but I don’t read much mystery so I read The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.

I loved that series - a couple of them were not very memorable, but I thought that first book was fantastic.

Which books rhyme?

message 2912: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Kissed and Crossed.

message 2914: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Mar 25, 2009 09:26AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Kelly wrote: "Kissed and Crossed."

Kissed and crossed are not rhyming words.

ETA: Not in the truest sense, but the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhyme) regarding rhyming, gives these words an opportunity. Surely Cynthia will give the final opinion.

message 2916: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I'm pretty sure Cynthia is looking for "perfect" rhymes, as other types haven't been allowed ("semi-rhymes," for example).

message 2917: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Judith wrote: "For Angela's 25 point task, I had Sara and I read Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants and then, ended up reading Second Summer of the Sisterhood instead of my original plan. The books are fun in a kind of guilty pleasure way - yes, I know it's completely unfeminist, but it reminds me of my pre-teenage love for the Babysitter's Club. That brings me to 140 points. "

I suppose it depends on how you define feminism. To me, feminism is all about being free, as a woman, to do whatever I want to do. If you want to read those books, so be it! ;)

Meghan, it is funny, I did laugh, but I did think you were serious. :) The task seems to be giving a lot of trouble, so I just didn't want you to be surprised if you read it and we told you it wouldn't work for the task. All is well!

message 2921: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Well, if Cynthia wants to disallow it that's ok with me, but I'm going to keep it in my own count of my points (I'm doing this for me...obviously not a challenger to those who can somehow read enough to get to 500+ points!!). I will say I understood that (1) it doesn't say "perfect rhyme" in the task and (2) Cynthia's rules say there's a bit of give in them.

message 2923: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Kelly - I was just trying to help you out, actually. I merely used the reference you'd provided. In other words, by looking at what's been allowed so far, it seems like the task is focused on words that most people would consider to rhyme (which would fit the definition of a "perfect rhyme" in your link). : )

Let me know if you like the sequel if you get a chance to read it. I have been looking for it for a while, but can't find it, and I can't justify buying it right now... Graduating is a little higher on my list of priorities. I do really want to read it though, because I really liked Daddy Long Legs!

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments I just finished the 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear Being the demibiography of a seagoing bear, with numerous illustrations and Excerpts from the "Encyclopedia of the Marvels, Life Forms and Other Phenomena of Zamonia and its Environs" by Professor Abdullah Nightingale . Written by Walter Moers.
That's for Sara's task. (Do I get bonus points for being 38 words??) 25 points

And I'm adding Jackie and Me by Dan Gutman and No More Magic by Avi for the YA 25 point task. I may still move them around if I can find some rhyming words, but they have been sitting for a while and I felt the need to add the points.

So that puts me at 90 points.

Bonnie, yes, I saw the movie when it came out, and after having read the book...wow, they changed SO much! In that first scene where she's seventeen, and betting on the young men racing, Grey would have been TEN! But instead, he's Georgiana's age or older! They definitely took lots of artistic license, and (typical Hollywood) gave a lot more attention to her love affair and her reaction to Bess and the Duke - I don't remember anything about her gambling or her debt, which are mentioned often in the book...

Lori, you may have missed the posts where we talked a little about this so I'll say it here- it's really easy to find your list if you add it to the 'my writing' part of your page. Then you can copy and paste it here whenever you want instead of going back through all the pages. I know a lot of people have been doing that since we talked about it.
I don't know if that would be easier for you but I thought I'd mention it!

The Stupid Crook Book

This wasn't all it was cracked up to be honestly. The author annoyed the hell of me with his little witty one liners at the end of each story. The stories themselves were often really funny but those remarks from the author killed it for me.

It's now a public domain book, so you can find it on the internet legally! I use this site. As long as you're okay reading an e-book, it's great. The book is also on Project Gutenberg.

It's even funnier when you watch when you're reading the book. The gambling is shown (a little), but, yeah, the romantic plot is definitely the emphasized bit. I'd read half of the biography when I saw the movie so when I read the second half I was like "WHAT ABOUT CHARLES GREY?!? He was barely mentioned in the second half. Foreman, at least, did not think he was the most essential part of Georgiana's life. Or Foreman just didn't want to have to write too much about him.

Thanks for telling me about that one- I just searched for it and added it. It does look like something I don't want to miss. It was rated pretty high too.
When I searched for that one I found some others that I didn't have listed too- some I had known about and some I didn't so thanks! :D

Lizzi Crystal (fortelleren) I'm currently in the middle of several books for the challenge, but I just have to say, this challenge is SO FUN and I'm enjoying it hugely! I'm so glad I stumbled across it. It's helping me read much more than I normally do and just so fun to have alot of people doing the same thing at once! It's a highlight of my day. :-)

Thank you so much Cynthia for putting it all together!!

Could you use it for the rhyme task? Tipping & Shipping News??? I'm the "rhyme challenge" member but found this site to help those of us impaired: http://www.rhymezone.com/

Let me know how it is...I think I saw the movie years ago.
