OFFICIAL SPRING CHALLENGE - 2009

I thought the Story of Britain was a fabulous, comprehensive history, reminding me of what I loved about the study of history as an undergraduate. Though my personal interest is social history, so I didn't always follow or enjoy the political stuff, I liked how Fraser made this book something to everyone. It's a good, intelligent narrative that weaves together little stories about politics, war, social history, religion, the lives of the monarchy, and technology. Nothing is covered so exhaustively as to get bored - I was especially happy that we didn't spend thirty pages in the WWI trenches - and she miraculously manages to keep the book moving through 785 pages, covering Roman Britain all the way to 2002.
I'll add that I'm really glad for this challenge, so thanks Jon. It took the promise of completing it by a deadline to make me read 50 pages a day, even though the book is physically large and it could be slow because the material is so rich. I'm glad I picked this one, because it helped me understand the British side to my beloved European history and it's easier for me to read 785 fabulously written pages than 400 so-so ones.

I also thought I wouldn't like it s much as I did but it was great. I recommended to two people when reading it because when I told them what I was reading they were very interested and one read it by now. She loved it!:-)

I was wondering the same thing. She was posting constantly and then, all of a sudden she just disappeared.

You can do it! :o)

Just completed my final task, The Road, given 5 stars by Becca (10.10). I believe that the more time I have to absorb and think about the point of this novel, the more fond I will grow. For now, very dark/depressing thoughts dominate. 3 stars.
Awesome experience, Cynthia, thank you for organizing and keeping track of soo much information.

2. NF about diarist: John Adams by David McCullough.
I've been working on this book since the first day of the challenge! I read it so slowly not because it was boring or poorly written, but partly because it was my work book (read during lunch/breaks), which means I had less time for it, and partly because it was just so thick. Plus, I found the first half slower. I've read about the American Revolution so much, another re-hashing is not exciting. But post-war when John Adams was VP and then President, it got a lot more interesting to me.
I'm conflicted about John A. He and his wife Abigail were obviously one of the Great American Love Stories which is incredibly sweet. He was honorable, steadfast, strong-willed, brilliant and a faithful and loving husband and father. He was a truly great man. But I'm not sure if he was the best politician/president, given his difficulty in playing the political game (which makes him a better person, if not a brilliant politician).
Now I have to go watch that John Adams miniseries.

25.4. ROS’ TASK - Read a book that’s on the big reads list. http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100...
The Twits by Roald Dahl
TOTAL = 250 POINTS

El - I picked up the miniseries on DVD for my Mom and Dad during my Spring Challenge madness at the library and they described it as awesome - and to know my Mom and Dad, that is QUITE a compliment !! I love the HBO series in general, but this one apparently tops the list.

For 25 Pt task #4, I read Lord of the Flies by William Golding. This one was doing double duty for me, as I am trying to work my way through the Lost Lit List, as well. I had never read this one before, and although it was interesting to read and compare to Lost, in the end, it made me sad, both for characters lost and for what it says about society in general.
With this task, I am up to 315 points and 18 tasks done.

So far I've been able to work 11 books from the Lost Lit List into my tasks for the Summer Challenge and Lord of the Flies is one of them. I can't wait to read it. :o)

There's lots of similarities to Lost, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it! I have a few more from the list fit into the Summer Challenge, too. :)

Bridget Jones's Diary and
Suite Française. Bridget Jone's Diary was really funny and Suite Francaise was touching. I wished Irene Nemirovsky had been able to finish her work.
My new tally should be 250. This has been fun and I'm looking forward to the summer challenge.

5. Book About Sacrifice:Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy.
I didn't really ever plan to read this book before the challenge. But it was actually very inspiring and interesting for someone who likes history. I liked how the first profile was about John Q. Adams, when I was reading a bio of his dad. The sacrifice bit comes in because the people profiled were willing (and often did) sacrifice their reputation, political careers, etc. for something they believed in.
10 Points
10. Fellow TNBBC Member 5-Star Book: The Color Purple by Alice Walker.
So...I didn't really like it. Maybe it just feels too real and too raw. It didn't help that I didn't really connect to any of the characters.

I'm joining this challenge a little late, but wanted to see how I could do with the books I've read this spring. One Question: for 10.2 would Dirty Girl's Social Club count? The author is from New Mexico and the book is about the Latina experience in America and includes characters from Mexico.
Thanks!

I have read this one several times and I always like it. Who doesn't like a happy ending?

I loved that book! The story was so original and funny but also serious and beautiful. And reading it a day before you move to Ireland and the city the story is set made it even more special.
