Beth F | 342 comments And these are the ones that stand out as my favorites/least favorites for this challenge:

Best:
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo
Stolen by Kelley Armstrong (total fluff, but I loved it)
Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

Worst:
The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (go ahead and tar and feather me now, I can take it)
A Rush of Wings by Adrian Phoenix (this book sucked a$$!!!!!)
The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett
Life: An Autobiography as Told by Jack Gunthridge by Jack Gunthridge

message 6002: by El (new)

El Beth, I read your review of The Book Thief after seeing you consider it one of the worst books you read for this challenge. I gave it only one star more than you did, but felt generally the same (minus the pregnancy part, and btw, congratulations on that). It's just refreshing to see that I'm not as out of my mind in regards to my opinion of the book as I am constantly told. :)

message 6003: by El (last edited May 22, 2009 11:46AM) (new)

El My best:
Residence on Earth/Residencia en la Tierra, Pablo Neruda.
Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier.
A Garden of Earthly Delights, Joyce Carol Oates.
The Answer / La Respuesta, Including a Selection of Poems, Sor Juana.
A Canticle for Leibowitz, Walter J. Miller, Jr.
In the Beginning Was the Ghetto Notebooks from Lodz, Oskar Rosenfeld.

The only one I would consider The Worst would be
The Barrens by Rosamond Smith (pseudonym for Joyce Carol Oates). What a disappointment.

ooooo fantastic!!! does a cycle mean that the books are going to keep coming and coming?!

message 6005: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments From what I've heard there will only be one more in the Cycle.

message 6006: by Alice (new)

My Illegal Self

The White Tiger

The Suspicions of Mr Whicher
Samuel Pepys Diary

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) Finally got another finished! It's the 25 point G&R challenge, which puts me at 365 points. I'm doing a little switching around, so I had previously listed Running with Scissors for the humor challenge. I'm switching that with I Am America, and So Can You! for humor. For the G&R challenge, I'm using (The) God of Small Things and Running with Scissors. Let me know if that makes no sense :-)

Lori, did your audiobook of Brisingr have an interview with the author at the end? Mine did, and I think he said that the final book has become so huge that they're making two books out of it - sort of like George R.R. Martin did with A Song of Ice and Fire.

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) EEEEE! Summer challenge up? Cynthia, I'm reaching my arms through the computer and giving you a giant hug now. Screw my plans to work this evening :-)

message 6014: by Roseann (new)

Roseann | 400 comments OMG!!! I get sick for a week and another challenge appears! I guess my reading will have to really kick into high gear now.

One thing about getting the flu and recouperating is that alot of reading gets done. I will be posting the MANY books I read later on tonight (I've got one more I'm really close to finishing).

We are small in number but I've found a few others who weren't too keen on the book either! That's always somewhat validating.

message 6016: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments I completed 15-point task 6, and listened to a translation of the epic poem of Beowulf.

It pretty much went over my head (my brain is still fried from university ha ha)

Anyways this brings me to 495 points!

Roseann | 400 comments OK, I just tried to post this and managed to hit a wrong button and deleted all of my comments--WAAAAA!

I'm just going to list numbers, titles, and authors this time. There are quite a few as I was stuck in bed most of the week (I usually don't enjoy being sick, but I had all my books to keep me company!)

5.1-FIRE WATCH by CONNIE WILLIS

5.2-LETTERS OF A WOMAN HOMESTEADER by ELINORE PRUITT STEWART

5.4-BELLWETHER by CONNIE WILLIS (I LOVE her books!)

10.10-THE UNDOMESTIC GODDESS by SOPHIE KINSELLA

25.1-GREEN MANSIONS by W.H. HUDSON & REMAINS OF THE
DAY by KAZUO ISHIGURO

25.7 TROPIC OF CANCER by HENRY MILLER (Mentioned and being read in AFTER HOURS).

I believe this brings my total to 385.

I was looking forward to this book... I'm still going to read it, but perhaps now my expectations will not be so high.

1. For St. Patrick’s Day
The Copper Beech

Another Maeve Binchy book I read and again I loved it. This book is made up by seperate stories about the kids at the school with the copper beech. You read about their lives from when they were kids till they are adults. All the seperate stories make one big story. Maeve Binchy always manages to wrte in a way that I just want to continue reading.

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I just finished Brave New World. It was the oldest book on my TBR, so 5 pts. I really liked this book. It was very interesting, and really makes you think about what is important in life. Life now is full of perfect happiness. There is nothing wrong, because when something is distressful or annoying (like bugs) they just get rid of them. It messes with your mind a little, especially when you start making connections to today's world. But, I really liked this book.

Finishing this means that I am done!!
Yay for finishing!!

I know the feeling!! I am still reading the book on Princess Diana and it is about 450 pages and I started I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb, which is a whopping 895 pages. I am about half way through though. The other books I have to finish are going to be quick reads. I have a plan, so we shall see! I am officially addicted to these challenges.

Beth F | 342 comments Angela wrote: I am officially addicted to these challenges.

Oh yeah, I'm completely addicted as well.

In between going out and doing weekend stuff and squeezing in some reading time, I've been sneaking on and off the computer all day to see how close everybody else is getting, who has finished and to switch tasks around for the summer challenge.

My husband thinks I'm nuts!

message 6042: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Mine too!!! I stayed home tonight to read and compile my list because we are having a BBQ tomorrow. He thinks I am crazy and I am starting to think I MAY have a problem :)

Well done to everyone who managed to finish the challenged!

I was going to use that one for the same task but changed my mind. I am reading it now...don't know yet what to think about it. Did you like it? Des the story evolve in more?

message 6045: by [deleted user] (new)

Jean, I thought it got off to a slow start, but I like the way it finished and I really enjoyed the characters of the sisters (who appear later). Lemme know what you think in the end.

message 6046: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Jeane- I really loved the book... the characters in it were all so different, but I think just the messages in the book overall for me was powerful.

Timbuktu A Novel, Paul Auster.

TOTAL POINTS: 460.

Josie (maid_marian) Yesterday I finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society for task 5.2. I loved it, read it with a stupid grin continually on my face, and giggles frequently getting the better of me.
Total: 430 points.

message 6050: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie | 271 comments 10 Points
1. Ireland: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.

Not as good as Wilde's plays. My favorite part was actually reading the review snippets by contemporary papers that was included in the penguin classics edition. So many critics panned it and talked about how it wasn't as good as such-and-such author who is now forgotten by modern generations while Wilde is still famous. Take that, critics!

3. Australia: a short history of australia by Manning Clark.

A bit dry and boring, to tell the truth. There are probably better Australian histories out there. But at least now I've got a starting place for Australian history (which I did not know about AT ALL before this).
