I absolutely LOVE that book! The ending is awesome! It is one of my favorites from the Newberry list. (That I have read so far.)

message 6104: by Beth F (new)

Beth F | 342 comments I finished I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou today for the 5 point task with the word "bird" in the title.

I can't believe I waited so long to read this book! I really loved it and want to read more by her soon.

Two more to go but they're both long. The book for Jon's task I'm saving for last because even though it's long, I think it will be really, really good and easy to keep myself motivated through.

The other one is over 500 pages and I started it last week but kept putting it down to pick something else up. It's for the spring cleaning task so I can't switch it out with anything else either. Bummer.

Rach (rachlovestv) | 104 comments I just finished another task - 25pt task #3. From Maggie's bookshelf, I read Undead and Unwed and Undead and Unemployed by MaryJanice Davidson. They were both cute, quick reads. I definitely liked the 2nd one better, but that is possibly because I knew the characters better by then. I'll probably finish reading the series eventually. :)

I should be up to 290 points now, with 17 tasks completed!

5.3--CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT by Blaize Clement

I have always been a sucker for a cat mystery and this appears to be a potentially good new series.I often have the killer figured out, but I was suprised at the end.

Note:I had another book listed, but when I reread the challenge I found I had not picked properly this was the oldest book listed that I had not read.

I have read her whole series of autobiographies. I know why the caged bird sings is only the first one of them. I think there are 5 or 6 in total. I read them all when I was about 18. I did my Engish Lit A-Level big essay on I know why the caged bird sings. I love the series. Lori (batchelorxyz) | 158 comments I finished Betty Sweet Tells All by Judith Minthorn Stacy for task #10.7. My moma's name was Betty and I could so see her as the main character of this book.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a sweet story with contrary characters. Just like most families, these characters did not always agree with each other or get along. But the love was always there.

Beth F | 342 comments I called in sick today and finished Birds Without Wings by Louis de Bernieres, which was the oldest unread book on my shelves (another 5 points).

I'm glad it's over and done--I've been struggling with this one for quite some time. My mother-in-law gave this to me for Christmas a few years ago and I've tried starting it other times with no success. I read Corelli's Mandolin by the same author awhile ago and absolutely loved it...unfortunately I can't say the same for this one.

7. Recommended and/or Given To Me By Mom: Wrong About Japan by Peter Carey.

My mom recommended (and sent me!) this book because she read it and wanted to know what I thought about it since I'm living in Japan. The book is about Carey and his son going to Tokyo and meeting a lot of really famous manga/anime writers and directors, because his son really loves manga and anime and Carey has a lot of weird theories about them. I felt like he was trying too hard to find a meaning that wasn't there. Sometimes a giant robot is just a giant robot, not a secret symbol of the mental scars left over from WWII. The book was a breeze to get through and entertaining, and the interview of the man who lived through the firebombing of Tokyo was very powerful. But Carey glossed over a lot of what could have made the book more interesting (some of the interviews only last a few pages) and I still think his theories were a product of a mind that tries to find a deeper meaning in everything.

You have no idea how hard I laughed when I read that you called out sick to finish a book - that's awesome - unless you are sick and you finishing the book was just a bonus in which case I'm sorry your sick...and I retract the laughter.

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) I'm cheering you on, Beth! It's fun when you get to the end and aren't close yourself to watch other people run across the finish line. And it looks like we might possibly have four more tasks for summer, so that's exciting! I don't think I'm close enough for best rookie so I'm hoping for maybe most improved next round, haha.

Beth F | 342 comments Yeah, yeah...I called in sick to read. :P It rained this afternoon so I also took a nap (napping during an afternoon storm is the best!)

When I was a kid, my mom called them "Mental Health Days" and so long as we didn't abuse the privilege, she occasionally allowed both my sister and I a chance to stay home from school and just take it easy.

It's a practice I haven't grown out of...I generally use 3-5 sick days a year to take an unplanned day off and relax!

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) I've read Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, which is semi-autobiographical and partly fiction. Would it count for El's task? If so, my point total is now 425.
I know that Little Women is pushing the limit of a diary (it's just a book based on Alcott's life), so I don't really expect it to be counted. I guess it's worth a shot asking though.

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) Beth, I had a friend when I was a kid who got those "Mental Health Days" and I used to be so jealous! She didn't have to fake being sick or anything, her mom just treated her like an adult and let her have them. It's funny how different it is though being a kid versus being an adult and coming to the realisation that the time is really yours. I skipped classes just a bit too much in undergrad because of that, but then in Ireland I realised that it was pretty pointless - because of the system there I hardly attended a class and got all A+s, with what I then saw as the luxury of sleeping in and hanging around at home all day, but now I wish I'd actually tried to learn some things and enjoy the country! After that, I barely missed a class in law school. But we all need a Mental Health Day every once in a while - after two years of working/studying/etc pretty much 10 hours a day seven days a week, I'm going to take a few when I graduate ;-)

Judith, your undergrad experience sounds a lot like mine. With my classes where attendance wasn't required, if it was too nice outside, or too cold, I'd just stay in with my roommates and watch movies/play super nintendo or play frisbee outside. While I'm student teaching though, my attendance is required every day. I don't know what I'm going to do on those wonderful weather days or those days where it's too cold to go outside.

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments I have a couple of changes to make and one book to add.
I'm moving Zookeeper's Wife to 25.3 (Choose two books off of someone's shelf) and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close to 10.9 (Read a book from TNBBC top list, I was born in 1970. This is book number 79)
Finally, I'm adding Watchmen to 25.5 a book outside your normal genre.
I'm only adding 10 points because of the switching. Cynthia, let me know if that doesn't make sense. Thanks!

That puts me at

Alice (aliceg) | 254 comments I finished the irls by Lori Lansens today for 5 points.

This is it for me for the Spring Challenge. I've really enjoyed it and am rapt that I achieved over 500 points! I completed a lot more tasks than I did in the winter challenge. I am in awe of all of those who have completed it or will do by the end of Sunday - you managed to read a non-fiction book over 400 pages on the british monarchy anyone who does that deserves congratulating (or commiserating!). Steph For 10 points:
9. Read a book from the TNBBC Top Books list…

I read Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides (#71 on the list, I was born in 1978).

That's it for me for this challenge! I'm off to the beach - so no more posting until Monday.

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) Don't worry, April, it does get easier! When I came to Iowa I never thought I'd be able to do it, since in undergrad I refused to leave my room if it snowed the tinniest bit. But if I told myself that I *had* to go (and in your case you really do!) then eventually trudging through the snow became routine. It makes you appreciate the spring much more!

Alice, I didn't completely understand what happened at the end. Do you mind messaging me how exactly you interpreted that? I was and am still slightly confused.
