I've just renewed A Prayer for Owen Meany at my Library for the 3rd time and I hope I can read it before end May!

message 5906: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I just finished The Silver Chair. I took it off Michelle's profile. She gave it 5 stars, and I did really like it!

So, I am also switching one book. I originally had The Book Theif listed for this task, but I am going to change it to the 15 pt Group Read task.
Thanks!

That gives me a new total of 565!
Just two books to go!

message 5907: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments I completed 10-point task number 7. I read North and South by John Jakes. My mom is a big fan, probably because the book sort of reads like a soap-opera.

This brings me to 455 points.

Amy C | 17 comments Completed 15.2 April is National Poetry month by reading The Wasteland, Prufrock and Other Poems. Someone recommended reading this close to the time of reading The Great Gatsby and The Sun Also Rises, so that's what I'm going to do.

My new tally should be 225.

message 5914: by Lizzi (new)

Lizzi Crystal (fortelleren) Finished A Wizard of Earthsea for 10.6, The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe for task 5.9, East for task 5.3, The Power of a Praying Wife for task 5.5, and Girl in Hyacinth Blue for task 5.6, bringing my total to 575 points.

This brings me to 465 points!

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments Lizzi, what did you think of Earthsea?

message 5917: by Avory (new)

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) I'm not Lizzi, but just the same April, I thought I'd chime in. I'm surprised you didn't like Earthsea! It's not my #1 favorite fantasy book, but I really enjoy the way language and naming play into the concept. I thought it had a lot of great connections between the storyline/world and important real-world philosophical questions, which is part of how I know a fabulous fantasy (LOTR, for example, being the pinnacle, is one you could write academic paper after academic paper on, linking the story to al these real world challenges).

Judith, I think it's wonderful that you chimed in! I don't know, I think I felt it was too slow-moving to really enjoy. I guess I am not really at a point in my life where I can enjoy that, I wanted so badly to enjoy this book too. I feel like certain parts of the book were worded really awkwardly, so maybe that contributed to my dislike. Different strokes eh?

Angela | 1934 comments I have been reading I Never Promised you a Rose Garden for this challenge and I absolutely do not like it!! I am forcing myself to finish because I do not want to start another book for this task so late in the game. I have picked it up and put it back down so many times... I have about 40 pages left and hope to finish it tonight!

Just a reminder that if we have more than ten people who finish the challenge the earlier finisher's tasks will be worth more points...for example if sixteen people finish then the tasks of the first 6 people who finished the challenge would be worth 30 and the rest would be worth 25.

Angela | 1934 comments Charity wrote: Oh no! I have that book on my TBR shelf, Angela. What about it hasn't been appealing?.

I really am not sure because I typically love reading books about people with mental illnesses (my major is psych). She has a secret world that she retreats to and I think I am confused by this world because it does not seem to be making sense to me. I think it is honestly just the way it is written. If it had been written by someone else differently, I think I would appreciate it more.

Just knocked off Fat Girl A True Story for task 5.6 and Conspiracy Game for task 10.4.

Fat Girl is Ms. Moore's memoir about growing up and living fat. It is torturous to read about how she was mistreated by her grandmother and mother; left by her father; and bullied by classmates. She's now a published writer with two grown children and I hope she can find some blessing in that.

I'm still of the opinion that Christine Feehan (birthday May 15th) can't write, but again I state, a gazillion books sold and I CAN'T PUT THEM DOWN. There, I admit it, I'm a Feehanaddict. Off to finish Deadly Game...

And Amy...I completely agree with you about Christine Feehan. The writing completely sucks but I can't stop reading her stuff. I have to limit myself to one every few months though or else I might gnaw off a limb.

Manday | 212 comments I just finished task 25.8
My two YA books were Uglies and Pretties, both written by Scott Westerfeld. I really enjoyed these books. While they are clearly YA and have some simplicities/cliches to them, they also take on a lot of interesting topics about what it means to be happy and the nature of freedom. I look forward to working Specials into the summer task!!

Jessica (sureshot26) | 94 comments The finish line is in sight - I finished 25.2 (pre-1900 diarist) with Madeline Stern's biography of Louisa May Alcott. Stern's scrupulous about not speculating, but it tends to make it hard to get a deeper sense of what Alcott was like as a person.

Current Total: 570! I'm finishing this thing - not bad for a late starter!

I enjoyed reading it, gave it four stars. I thought it was well-written and I liked the spiritual elements in it. Some of the violence and poverty scenes were jarring, made me realize how much I take for granted.

message 5941: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (capreader) I was hoping to get a ton of reading done recently, and it's not happening. However, I did finish a couple while proctoring the MCAS (state test). One is a biography of Margaret Bourke-White which I found really fascinating. The other is only half of the challenge for 25.3, but it's called Bloomability by Sharon Creech. I really enjoyed the story and the main character. It reminded me in some ways of another boarding school story, by Madeleine L'Engle. The name of the book is escaping me, but I remember that the protagonist was Pippa.

My update is below. I am close to breaking the 100-point mark, which will make me fairly satisfied as a rookie.

15 POINTS
1. Margaret Bourke-White: The Photography of Design, 1927-1936 by Stephen Bennett Phillips
2. Loose Woman by Sandra Cisneros
3. A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
4. It Happened On Cape Cod by Shawnie Kelley
5. Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively
6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson
7. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson
8. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (interview on The Colbert Report)
9. Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
10. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series

25 POINT TASKS
1. How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez
Reaching for Sun by Tracie Vaughn Zimmer
2. Eden’s Outcasts: The Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Father by John Matteson
3. Bloomability by Sharon Creech
Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
4. Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons
5. The White Mountains by John Christopher
6. The Queen’s Fool by Philippa Gregory
7. TBD
8. The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson
Jinx by Meg Cabot
9. My Most Excellent Year: A Novel of Love, Mary Poppins, and Fenway Park by Steve Kluger

Total points: 95 (May 20)

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments Kelly, I love Sharon Creech! Bloomability is great! I've only read one book by her that I didn't really like too much, but all the others have been Really Like it, or Love it! She is one of my most favorite YA authors! (and authors in general...!)
I especially love Walk Two Moons, and Chasing Redbird.

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments Just finished The Chronicles of Narnia!! I read The Last Battle for my 5 pt Christian Fiction book.

Again, I really like this series and am glad I read it. I think though, that I will encourage my younger brothers to read them now while they are younger. There are some parts, and things that I think would read better as a younger kid, but I still liked them!

New total: 570!!

Just need to read my oldest TBR now!!

Wow these challenges are getting bigger and bigger with more and more tasks. 30 pointers! You would think that the bigger it gets the less people complete it but it seems to be the opposite! I'm looking forward to the summer one. I'm wanting to get some new titles written down I'm bored of looking at the titles on my existing list now - lol!!

Kim I've just completed the 50 point challenge- I'm not sure whether I can complete that if I haven't done all the others!

I read Playing the Odds by Nora Roberts and Naked in Death J D Robb.

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I picked up Dear John last night and before I knew it I was finished. So this was the second Sparks book I read for this challenge - both ended up being bittersweet tales of love found and lost...but equally beautiful stories. As usual I'm a big sap and found myself crying by the end - Sparks does it to me every time - although I have to say I enjoy the ones where there's a happy ending a bit more. This was my military Memorial Day task.
