8:16 p.m. and I had a great time over at my daughter's house today. Most of the grandkids were there and we finished grilling out like a minute before a big storm came. Plan to read for an hour or so and hit the sack. I have already read around 100 pages today, so it was a good day.

Kathryn (kcanty313) | 1870 comments 8:08 PM. Mark and I just went for a walk. We walked 3.21 miles. I'm so happy he went with me. We are on our way home, but making a stop at Home Depot. When we get home, I'm going to make dinner and get a shower. I finished the Selby book I was reading, so I'm not sure if I will keep reading AGOT, or start something else.

Cindy, so glad you had a great day and were able to get some reading done!

Heather, hope you feel better soon!!

8:32PM We had tuna salad, rice and peas for dinner. I love tuna salad sandwiches on hot days. Even after al lthe rain it got back to the high 90's I think. Had a good work out after dinner this evening, it was pretty intense so that is good. Been busy with my site/blog tonight. Aves is here now, but I am gonna start back to reading anyway. I am sure he will get sleepy soon. We will be taking him home Wednesday afternoon.

Cindy so glad you got some reading done and had a good time with your daughter and grandkids. That is always so fun!

Kathryn - I think we just about have the right combinations of medications so I'm not in constant pain. I would love to start walking again, but the doctor had told me to hold off for a bit. Maybe I can start again. He was afraid my legs would buckle as they so often do and I would break my hip from a fall. I think it happens more from the pain than anything, but now that the pain is getting better I really want to start walking again.

Janie - Did you get him a little longer this time? Hope you had fun and some quality time together!

Katy (katyas-69) | 1731 comments Cindy, scary deal with the helicopter! Our neighborhood can be a little rough, too, but I don't think we've had a helicopter involved in any of the excitement (since I've lived here: at least one murder, one riot, and many, many gunshots heard, various burglaries...) Anyway, glad also your meds are helping. Don't rush things and hurt yourself!

10:48 p.m. EDT The rest of Dragon Con was great. Tomorrow we need to make the drive one more time to take my friend back to the airport and then I can safely die for a few days. I'll eventually do a big blog post with a report on who I met, who I saw, what I did, what I brought home, and will be sure to let y'all know the link. Meanwhile, I need to go to sleep soon; another early day tomorrow to have Katt to Atlanta airport by 10!

Kathryn (kcanty313) | 1870 comments 8:40 PM. *sigh* So, I wrote a post on this thread but when I pressed "done" to post, that stupid girl on the chair popped up! Argh! Anyways! This thread has been QUIET today! I've missed hearing about my friends! I've had a pretty good day today: had a great workout, did some chores, went grocery shopping, read a short story titled Vapors and wrote my review for it, watched the U.S. Senate hearings on Syria, looked up some new authors to read because I'm kind of interested in the mystery/thriller genre and have never really read the genre, dinner is cooking, and I'm looking to forward to reading some tonight with coffee since I bought new creamer. I have been considering whether or not to put down AGOT. I just haven't felt compelled to read it lately, but instead pick up Different Seasons by Stephen King. It has been on my mind lately. We'll see though. I hope everyone has had a great day!

message 6267: by Chris (new)

Chris (cbrunner11) | 674 comments Sorry you have missed your friends Kathryn, Honestly I just haven't had much to say today. I really liked Different seasons, all of the stories in that was really good. I would suggest moving on to that, but then again I didn't care for AGOT. Sounds like you had a good day and I'm glad you are branching out into the Mystery/Thriller
genre. I'll have to think of some good authors for you to try, I will always suggest Jeffery Deaver.

8:56PM and I'm anxiously waiting for the end of my shift (4 min) so I can go home and have a late late dinner, I'm starving.

message 6268: by Rachel (last edited Sep 03, 2013 07:12PM) (new)

Rachel 10:05pm- just finished watching so you think you can dance-

Kathryn- that girl on the chair is so annoying! I love the mystery thriller genre and always recommend Harlan coben Gone for Good is my fave. This year, I've been reading the alphabet series by sue grafton and always enjoy it-they are quick reads.

If you prefer darker twisted mysteries then i'd recommend Gone Girl. hope that helps :)

10:59PM Well not much happening today. Had some Chicken lo mein for dinner, then had a good work out. promised Aves a trip to the playground so we did that. Got home, and finished watching Extreme Makeover: Weight loss Edition. Chris Powell does some amazing things with these people. So then Aeverie wanted to look at Halloween stuff again on you tube, so we did that, then he got situated with a movie and he fell asleep. So I read a little more and here I am.

Kathryn I am excited for you expanding your horizons with some mystery/suspense. One of my favorite genres. I would like to recommend some Lisa Jackson, Sharon Sala, James Patterson, his older stuff, Jeffery Deaver is good too. And also I enjoy Greg Iles. He has a great detective series with Penn Cage, one of my favorites. There is a lot to choose from in this genre.

Chris hope you had an ok night at work. Rachel I am looking forward to my first Coben, a buddy read coming the 15th called The Innocent. I also wanna read Six Years.

message 6270: by Chris (new)

Chris (cbrunner11) | 674 comments I want to read six years also Janie. If I can get ahold of it when you go to read it I'll join you for a buddy read, but our library still has a long waiting list.

message 6271: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kcanty313) | 1870 comments 11:20 PM. Thank you all for your recommendations! This is part of the reason I love GR!

Chris, you actually reminded me I have a Deaver book: Broken Window. Do his books have to be read in order? And, are they all parts of a series?

Rachel, I have Gone Girl and still need to read it! I kind of like dark and twisted, which is why I like King so much. But, I would like to try some mystery/thriller/suspense without the horror. I hope that makes sense! I've read one Coben and started another a few years ago. His style kind of wasn't my favorite, or it was probably just that particular book. The one I finished was Hold Tight.

Janie, thank you so much for the recommendations! When we go to the bookstore on Thursday, I will have to look at the mystery/thriller/suspense section. I guess I'm a little afraid of getting into the genre because I don't know much about the authors, so it's a good thing I have you all to help. I'm kind of trying to avoid series books, unless they can be read out of order.

message 6272: by Chris (new)

Chris (cbrunner11) | 674 comments Broken Window is part of the Lincoln Rhyme series. Each book is a single story so you can read them in any order. I like to read them in order because of the characters. The relationships grow and change with each book so there is continuity in that aspect.

Bone Collector is the first in that series and is my favorite book ever.

Kathryn (kcanty313) | 1870 comments The Bone Collector is one of my favorite movies.

Chris I would love that! No worries about the waiting list, just let me know when it is your turn. I can always order the book on Amazon when you are ready.

Kathryn I totally understand wanting to stay away from series. Deavers are series, but I believe that most can be read out of order because they are different cases with each book. It is the same with Lisa Jackson as well. We will get ya hooked up.

message 6275: by Chris (new)

Chris (cbrunner11) | 674 comments The movie stays pretty close to the book, but as always, the book is way better.

message 6277: by Rachel (last edited Sep 03, 2013 10:57PM) (new)

Rachel I haven't read deaver or lisa Jackson yet but I hope to soon. I loved the movie the bone collector.

unfortunately most of the mysteries I have read are series and although they can technically be read as standalones -they tend to be more enjoyable when read in order-basically the mystery always gets solved at the end of the book but it's the series hero or heroine's personal life that continues from one book to the next and in many series the hero/heroine is as important as the mystery itself.

also sometimes the author will mention a previous case in a later book thereby ruining the earlier book by revealing a significant spoiler.

there are always exceptions but they are harder to find. the hercule poirot books (Agatha Christie) and some (but not all) of the agent pendergast books (preston & child) can be read as stand alones.

if you get the bone collector-let me know what you think-I've been wanting to try deaver for a while and have heard good things. Janie's comments have made me want to read lisa Jackson- there are just so many talented authors in this genre-it's just a matter of finding who appeals to you the most.

have fun at the bookstore :)

6:45AM Wow I am a little sleepy this AM. I may have to go lay back down once Kay leaves for school, if Aves stays asleep that it LOL This afternoon we will be taking him home.

Rachel I hope you get to try Lisa Jackson and Jeffery Deaver. I like Cat better than Lincoln in the Deaver books, but there are mostly Lincoln ones. Not as many featuring Cat. Oh well. I will read any of them really. LOL There is just too much to choose from.

Kathryn we will have a load of fun. I can't wait for you to experience this UBS. My favorite place to be actually. LOL. Hope you can enjoy it as well.

10:01am EDT. Really at loose ends lately, having trouble finding something to read. Then my friend Chuck sent me Water for Elephants so I'm hyped to read that. Just when I really needed it, a friend came through!! YAY GR! Spent the morning doing laundry and making chicken BBQ for dinner. So I have the rest of the day free. Hope all my GR friends are having a super day!!

Kathryn (kcanty313) | 1870 comments 9:57 AM. Good morning, GR! I'm excited this morning because it means one more day until Janie and I meet! I kind of didn't sleep too well last night. I kept waking up every few hours. I think I'm just worried a bit about all of the crazy stuff going on in the world at the moment. At least tomorrow with Janie is something to look forward to and take my mind off a bit. Oh, and plus books!

Last night, I did pick up Different Seasons. I'm only a few pages in, if anyone wants to read along. The first story really engaged me, and I think I've been needing a read like that for a week or so. Maybe it will help me get back into AGOT. I think I will start a Different Seasons thread in case anyone joins me.

Hope everyone has a great day!

11:12AM Aves is kinda keeping himself entertained at the moment. So that is good. I have not had much of a chance to read though this AM which does not surprise me since Aves is here. But that is ok. So I do feel your excitement Kathryn. This will be so much fun! WOOT and more books. I would love to read Different Seasons, but I don't have the book. Maybe I will find it tomorrow. We will be taking Aves home today. And I will not have him again till next Monday. So that is plenty of time to read. LOL

Terri glad you have some thing to read!

Chris (cbrunner11) | 674 comments 12:18 PM Working again tonight, no big deal I had a little mini vacation which I wish I was still on. Haven't gotten to much reading in the last few days and none on Joyland. I'm really itching to pick it up again but I can't bring it to work. Almost finished Ender's Game becuase it is an audio and I'm trying to finish my Kindle book. I just want that one over already.

Jealous about Kathryn and Janie heading to the books store. I want to book shop. Terri so glad you have something to read, and very happy to see you post. I missed ya.

Kathryn, I also wanted to suggest Karin Slaughter as a mystery writer. She is great but her stuff does have to be read in order. I got the end of her Grant county series spoiled because I started with her later books. Kathy Reichs, and Michael Connelly is also amazing.

The first few books were part of the Grant County series and each one can be read individually but there is a big thing that happens in the last one of that series. It is totally spoiled in later books. I still have gone back and read them and I really like them, but if you want to be surprised don't read anything after Beyond Reach. I haven't read that one yet, but I'm sure I will love it just as much even though I know the ending. It will be how it came about that I don't know.

I read a lot of Mystery so I have a ton of authors I read. Connelly is one you can read individually, but again the characters have little things that happen in their lives outside of the main plot that kind of go in order.

The Slaughter book I have I got a couple weeks ago, it is Triptych, book one in the Tent series. I had looked them up a head of time so I would choose the right one.

Connelly has a TON of books. LOL I went and checked my library and apparently I don't have any Connelly, although I thought I did. I am always looking for more, more, & More authors.

Kathryn have you tried any Chelsea Cain? I have read I think the first 2 or 3 of her Gretchen Lowell series. I thought those were pretty good.

I haven't read the early Will Trent series, later in his series though is where the spoiler comes in. My first Karin Slaughter book was Fallen, and that and every book after had the spoiler. Will Trent's series overlaps with a lot of the characters from the Grant County series to be one new story line.

I don't understand why an author would do that Chris. Especially if it spoils a read for someone. ugh!

message 6292: by Chris (new)

Chris (cbrunner11) | 674 comments I saw her at a book signing and she felt that chapter was over for her and she had bigger plans for the characters. I don't mind it all that much even though it is a huge event.

I still have loved reading the books prior to Beyond reach and since I already know what happens, when she puts out a new book I jump on it right away. She is an amazing author and I'm sure you will really enjoy her.

message 6293: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kcanty313) | 1870 comments 2:05 PM. Just put clean sheets on the bed after eating lunch: strawberry Greek yogurt, two eggs, and some delicious purple grapes. I also cleaned our fish tank a bit. I've been reading Different Seasons most of the day, except for when I stopped to do the things mentioned above and check on my GR and Facebook updates.

Janie, no I haven't read any Chelsea Cain. I really haven't read but maybe two to three books considered in the mystery/thriller/suspense genre. I think I should spend some time later looking up some books by these authors and seeing which ones I find interesting, maybe stand alone, and the like, and maybe make a list of some to look for tomorrow. I think the book Chris recommended The Bone Collector would be a good start since I've at least seen the movie, and it will give me a taste on the genre as far as reading it goes. It is new to me, and like fantasy, you know some genres aren't for everyone. I think I will like the genre though because of my interests outside of reading. It would be great to have new authors and a new genre to read.

message 6294: by Chris (new)

Chris (cbrunner11) | 674 comments I think you will enjoy it Kathryn. Each author has their own twists and style. Deaver is a master of twist and misdirection. Kathy Reichs is all about Forensic anthropology which I find fascinating.

I would be failing if I didn't mention some of my favorite classic mysteries. Hound of the Baskerville by Arthur Conan Doyle and The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett are my favorite of the classics.

Kathryn the book store has a ton of Deaver Books. I think I am up to about 5 or 6 of his books, bought, not read. LOL Well I have read 2 of them. A Maiden's grave and XO. If you end up enjoying mystery, Deaver is a great Author. Patricia Cornwell is another good mystery/suspense Author or so I have heard.
