Fatin I've been a little bored, and I was going through the discussion posts to find some meaningful topics being discussed and you know what I found instead?
Lots and lots and lots and lots of stupidass posts about THG series. Quizzes, reviews and those goddamn word games! Or ridiculous stuff like Team Gale or Team Peeta?! I get it if there was one post like that, but noooo, they're some 100+ boards just discussing what team you're on.
At the moment, I am disgusted and disappointed in the tweens, and teens. Which is really funny because I'm a teenager myself. What I don't get is how so many of you can be so inane and foolish? I wasn't when I was your age. I don't know what it is that makes the difference, but maybe you should pick up some great books. I'm not saying THG isn't good, I enjoyed it. But really, it's not the greatest thing in the world. Read the classics! Read Jane Austen! Read John Steinbeck! Read the Brontë sisters! Read Ray Bradbury, George Orwell, Douglas Adams, Stephen King, George Bernard Shaw, Charles Dickens, and Aldous Huxley! Read Roald Dahl!

And if you're not into all that, here is some great YA ficiton:
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Speak
The Giver
The Fault in Our Stars
Lord of the Flies
A Wrinkle in Time
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Catcher in the Rye
The Princess Bride
Thirteen Reasons Why
It's Kind of a Funny Story
About a Boy

And if you want something more "adult", ask. I'll tell you of some great novels.

Just please, please stop with the silly, hollow discussion boards.

Avani I understand your point that many of the THG discussions threads aren't the most intellectually stimulating (to say the least) but they have the right to discuss whatever books they want, even if it's not "good" literature in your eyes.

Dee its not the discussing the books - its the fact that the vast majority of the discussions aren't discussions - they are games (rate the avatar above you; pick a team etc)

I was referring to the part where Fatin was suggesting we read better literature. I agree that the "discussions" that happen in the YA books, and Harry Potter, are for the most part pointless, but Fatin seemed to suggest that we were foolish for liking books like THG.

Fatin Faith wrote: "Well , the Hunger Games is a -browse through it during the summer vacation- book , not really memorable and well written , but Fatin was probably just frustrated that most of the teenagers who read..."

Thanks Faith, you got exactly what I was trying to say!

Avani, I like THG series myself, I don't condemn people for liking it. But they aren't the best of anything. And I think by reading more complex and mature novels, these kids could develop better comprehensions skills and a little maturity.

Fatin Faith wrote: "ps - Dahl rocks :)"

Have you read his adult works? They're absolutely brilliant.
Kiss Kiss is my favourite.

True, true. I see what you were trying to say.

Well, Kiss Kiss is a short story collection, most of them even available on the internet! That's why I love it so much, even when I don't have time, I can squeeze in at least one short story. The stories are shorter than those in Switch Bitch. I'm currently reading that.

We're talking about short stories by Roald Dahl, you should read those two, they're really good. Very subtle. Very sadistic.

Has anyone read 'Lamb to the Slaughter' by Roald Dahl?
Apparently it's really good.

P.S. Another fantastic writer is Philippa Gregory, she wrote the books 'The Red Queen', 'The Other Boleyn Child' and 'The Queen's Fool', plus tonnes more. I'm reading 'The Queen's Fool' at the moment and it's so good! If you're into history and monarchy stuff, I'd suggest giving her a go!

Fatin Hi, Starhyphen! The link I posted above is Lamb to the Slaughter! You heard right, it's absolutely brilliant!
Have you read The Other Boleyn Child? Would you recommend it? I've been into the Boleyns ever since I watched The Tudors.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Nah, I've only just started reading Gregory's books, 'The Queen's Fool' is my first one.

Even though I haven't read 'The Other Boleyn Child', I'd still recommend it xD it's almost destined to be good :)

see I do disagree with this point - I think there are a lot of subtle different layers in THG that could be discussed. But most people tend to focus on the obvious. My mom is looking at using these in the class because they could be developed into a schema unit (where all the classes are based on different aspects) - so revolutions through history, the different districts and the geography/how it plays into their produce etc

message 20: by Dee (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dee its kind of like watching a disney movie - there is the kids layer, and then there is the adult layer - so they can be enjoyed on many different levels

Angie Elle Fatin wrote: "I've been a little bored, and I was going through the discussion posts to find some meaningful topics being discussed and you know what I found instead?

Maybe it's just me, but I'd take 'inane and foolish' any day over judgmental.

Fatin Peace wrote: "i think u can add the right stuff."

I'm sorry, what? I don't get it.

Angie wrote: "Maybe it's just me, but I'd take 'inane and foolish' any day over judgmental. "

Angie, maybe you have more patience than me and can accept silly games being played where you'd like to see meaningful discussions, but I can't.

Fatin Dee wrote: "its kind of like watching a disney movie - there is the kids layer, and then there is the adult layer - so they can be enjoyed on many different levels"

Well of course, everything has layers, even if the author doesn't mean for them to be there, we all have our interpretations of a story. I don't mind people discussing THG, I did that with my friends. We talked about (view spoiler). There was also this discussion about Annie's child and whether she was fit to bring him/her up. I won't say more as this is under THG and not Mockingjay.
Now see, that was good! I liked that. But there isn't nearly enough of it. Everything is swallowed up by these dumb "games".

Fatin Faith wrote: "The adult layer of Disney movies?"
Well, they do have layers. Ariel's story stands out to as a feminist piece. Mulan is about independence. But yes, the original stories are so much better. It might be because I like macabre, and the ending of the originals suit me more.

Faith wrote: "I have a 14 year old cousin , I love her to pieces but she thinks this book is the gem of the dystopian genre , which is just ridiculous."
Introduce her to Animal Farm! Or Fahrenheit 451, 84 is too depressing.

Fatin hahaha I know what you mean! I handed my younger brother (14) Animal Farm and he tossed it aside for Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Fatin Peace wrote: "i wonder how many other books serise that has more 2 it then in the HG movie?"

I've honestly not understood a single comment you've made here. Or the purpose of the ok.
Can you please write full words so I can understand what you're saying? I have no idea what your abbreviations stand for.

message 27: by Jeni (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jeni Not everyone matures in a literary tastes as quickly as others. I remember reading Nancy Drew books like they were the cure to cancer when I was 7 or 8 (young reader, here). Then I discovered Agatha Christie. It was a revelation, I tell you.

It is a sad fact, though, that not many American youth seem interested in reading. Everything is readily available online or on TV, so why bother? I will always recommend a book.

There is a big difference between "best book ever written," and "best book I've read so far." I usually just substitute the latter when people declare the former.

message 28: by Jeni (last edited Oct 05, 2012 09:49AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jeni Just an observation: it is possible to add to a thought without reiterating everything that has already been said and not really be at odds with the discussion, you know. Especially when the original thoughts are so well made.

As for the games on GR, since that seems to be bothersome, I like some of them. I enjoy pitting my knowledge of the books I love against others who enjoy them as much as I do. Some are silly and repetitive, but some are fun. That's just my perspective.

Edit: As an afterthought, I would say that the threads about the movie actor's real life problems (i.e., Rob and Kristin) are wayyyy more annoying to me than the games.

Maria I also agree with Jeni, we all grow at different literary speeds, we could all have some fav. youth book that particularly speaks to us. I just feel that there is no need to make anyone feel bad for the games they choose to play, or not. I especially feel bad for Peace, who if any one has cared to notice is not from the United States, and could be having a translation problem. I appreciate the list you posted Fatin, and will take the time to check out the books you recommended, however I do think it is OUR own choice whether we choose to ignore the games or to participate with out making anyone feel bad.

message 30: by Fatin (last edited Oct 06, 2012 09:18AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Fatin I don't understand how the "This or That" or "Rate the Avatar Above You" or "The Word Game" has anything do with literary speeds? Also why are quizzes part of the discussion threads when they already have a separate section?

As for the threads about the movie actor's real life problems? Yes, I was very irritated, but I had a good laugh over them. And then I promptly deleted Twilight from my list so I didn't have to put up with them any longer. I don't want to remove THG from my list, so this is more troublesome.

And as for it being our own choice, I thoroughly disagree, because they take up most of the space when I try to find a good discussion board about the books I like.

message 31: by Dee (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dee i don't want to have to delete books just to avoid stupid questions...I wish there was a way to say no thanks to DQ's for certain books - that would help me greatly...ICGARA (i could give a rat's ass) about HP discussions or twilight ones

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Dude, not the best way to get teens to read *better* books. Some of us don't have friends that read a lot and so we like to discuss the ltl things about THG that we can't discuss with anyone else, no matter how silly. And no offense, cause I get where you're coming from, but maybe think it through before you rant.( learned that the hard way). And Thirteen Reasons Why sucked so hard.

Exactly. I tried searching for that option, but I don't think it exists.

Fatin Baylor, I haven't read 13 Reasons Why but a friend whose taste I trust recommended it.
Well, this site isn't for your friends, it's for people who read. So, since you do read, I'm sure you read more than THG. You can discuss "the little, silly" things about THG with your friends on Facebook, in person, on the phone, through instant messaging. Why not come here to discuss the books you can't discuss with people you know because they haven't read them?

Jayden WHAT IZ THG???

I hate to put on my Captain Obvious hat here...but as you pointed out, this site is for people who have read The Hunger Games. All of them. Not just the narcissistic ones who think they are so much more mature than the rest because they don't enjoy the game posts.

By the way, I'm guessing the majority of the people participating in the games have read the book.

If the site had a problem with them, they'd take them down. Instead of policing the threads, why don't you simply ignore the game ones and participate in only those that appeal to you?

Fatin Jayden wrote: "WHAT IZ THG???"

thanks for bringing my selfesteem and spirit down FATIN. But anyways thanks.

Fatin Angie, I don't know how many times I have to say this, but I can't ignore them because I have to go some 30 pages down to find discussions about other books. If that wasn't a problem, I couldn't care less about what is being talked about and what games are being played on THG threads.

Jayden, I didn't mean to insult you, but honestly, how could you not figure out I mean The Hunger Games by THG? I mean...whatever. I apologize for offending you.

I don't have a facebook because I don't personally like it. And you are just making a big deal out of nothing. Ignore the other threads, it's called self control? Sure maybe it annoys you, but dig deep buddy. Oh and this site is for everyone, and to say it's not for my friends is incredibly rude. You are acting a little self righteous and that's a shame. Oh and I read a hell of a lot, but which books I choose to discuss are my choice. THG is popular, has a lot of diversity and is fun and interesting to discuss. So is Twilight, Divergent and any other book that is popular. Good or bad those books are popular for a reason, they get people talking. Why is that a bad thing?

it doesn't - but it has been requested - supposedly according to the TPTB for goodreads, books are only supposed to show up on your discussions tracker (which is the only time I access them), if you rated them above 3 stars - but that obviously doesn't work because I gave twilight 1 star and it still shows up
