Five favourite books (that is five out of the many books that I have read, these 5 also belong to the shorter list of books that have been re-read more than once)
mine areHarry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Anne of Green Gables
The Five People You Meet in Heaven
My Uncle Oswald
The Secret Life of Bees
Narrowing it down to 5 after 50 years of reading is very hard! Les Misérables
A Wizard of Earthsea
The Alchemist(Paolo Coelho)
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
The Castle Franz KafkaHard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World Haruki Murakami
American Pastoral Philip Roth
Cosmopolis Don Delillo
Motherless Brooklyn Jonathan Lethem
No Great Mischief Alistair MacLeodThe Summer Book Tove Jansson
The Poisonwood Bible Barbara Kingsolver
The Deptford Trilogy: Fifth Business, The Manticore, and World of Wonders Robertson Davies,
The Count of Monte Cristo Alexandre Dumas
The Once and Future King T H WhiteThe Persian Boy Mary Renault
The Crystal CaveMary Stewart
Then I demand my rights as a cantankerous auld biddy, to have Cornelius Harker's entire Words to the Wise Saga - even those bits he hasn't written yet! - and Andy Barrett's Dead trilogy.
PS - can I have CH's and AB's books each bound in a single volume please!

Well I sneaked Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit as one choice ;) plus I did wonder about adding all the discworld books by Terry Pratchett.
Of the books added since my choice there are 8 that I have read.

One of my choices is a trilogy as well Ignite, so I don't see why not! I have read 8 of the other suggestions too, and there are a couple that I have meant to read. Perhaps this will spur me on!
Jack Vance, the Lyonnese trilogyChristian Cameron Tyrant (Which is actually four books but hey)
JRR Tolkien The Lord of the Rings (with The Hobbit bound into it)
Ellis Peters The Cadfael Chronicles
Terry Pratchett Haven't a clue which one

pfft, you are not an auld biddy! i claimed hp as one of mine - series are allowed, although when compiling the list i'll probably just put the first one down (as it's kinda like a starter to the rest)
Some lovely books in there already. Great to see Ellis Peters, thanks Jim! And anything by Mary Renault gets my vote too, thanks Ignite - and I'm also a fan of 'Once and future king'.I adore Thomas Hardy... If I have to pick one, my fave is probably Far from the Madding Crowd
And then there's George Eliot. Definitely Silas Marner but I'd also want The Mill on the Floss
Tough choices now, but there's Mary Webb, Precious Bane, and of course Gormenghast (Glad we've already got Tolkein in there)
And that's without Jane Austen and Dickens... plus there are a couple of French novels I'd love to pick.
so......... the ones you have linked are your final choices?we need a definite 5 here. no 'i-dont-know-what-to-pick'
Definitely, Elle!! We used to do a top 100 when I worked in the library service, years ago. It always seemed to be Catherine Cookson who came out near the top. Somehow I think our list will be different. Tho so far, not that different. I'll hve to see if I've still got a copy to compare.
And thanks for a great thread.
Oh if we can do a series, I want Darren's Undead books. The Man From U.N.D.E.A.D. Trilogy
Spider Robinson's Callahan books.
The Callahan Chronicals (Callahan's Place Trilogy, #1-3)
The Stand by Stephen King, of course
Galápagos by Kurt Vonnegut.
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
This is tricky...
Oh no!I would find choosing my hundred favourites easier.I am so glad some have been picked earlier. The Complete Sherlock Holmes
|1201301]To The Devil A Daughter
The Jigsaw Man: The Remarkable Career of
Britain's Foremost Criminal Psychologist
The Bone Collector
Alex Cross's Trial
ContactThe Mists of Avalon
Lost Horizon
The War of the Worlds
Dune
And I demand the right to add another half dozen because there are some others that I can't live without.
Philip (sarah) wrote: "Oh no!I would find choosing my hundred favourites easier.I am so glad some have been picked earlier."That is why I left some of my other favourites out because I knew that they would be chosen by other people.
Are we counting my Terry Pratchett choice as the whole discworld series then? Or can someone else add other individual books from that series?
(Must admit though that there are a few cropping up in this thread that won't be finding their way onto my TBR list)
we are officially at 53 :D (would be 55 if jim hadn't picked doubles)
im hoping someone picks hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. i unfortunately hadn't room for it.

I'm going to be putting the first one down so it's a 'read them all' type thing. it means we have a variety of authors.
plus if we end up over a hundred and we have doubles by the same author i may ask if we could decide between them so we can have 100 different authors (in theory)
A few of mine have gone already! Including To Kill a Mockingbird.so... in no order...
1) The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
2) The Princess Bride - William Goldman
3) The Wind in the Willows - Kenneth Grahame
Okay, I can only come up with 3 right now. I will narrow down 2 more and get back to you...
EDIT -
4) The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (series) - Ann Brashares
5) Heidi - Johanna Spyri
That was so difficult!!
I didn't choose any of our authors, as I knew it would be too difficult to pick only 5, and assumed you'd put them in the list anyway (:
brilliant katy :P you covered 2 that i really wanted too!!edit to say: only the books picked will be going in the list. so if you want our authors in there you gotta pick em - but this is only going to be posted on here s a sort of challenge similar to the BBC one
Tinker, Taylor, Soldier , Spy - Le CarreUnder the Greenwood Tree - Hardy
The Prize - Yergin
Goodbye to All That - Graves
A Maggot - Fowles
it'd help for future reference to link to the books please. just so i can get the full name and make sure i have the right onethanks laurence

The Front Runner by Patricia Nell Warren

Everyone needs to suggest 5 books and we'll (royal we) compile it so we can have a GRUKAKF best 100 books.
If possible try not to double up on someone else but don't worry if you inevitably do I'll tell you to re-choose!
You can choose absolutely anything. Hopefully enough people will choose books so we can get to 100 (or we can go beyond that if more people join me!)
Have fun! :D
